Rohan Bopanna gets new Australian Open doubles partner

India’s Rohan Bopanna will emerge from his 14-day quarantine in Melbourne later on Saturday with a spring in his step after his quest for a new doubles partner for next month’s Australian Open finally ended.

The former doubles World No. 3 is one of 72 players who have been confined to their hotel rooms in Melbourne after fellow passengers on the flights that brought them to Australia tested positive for COVID-19.

Compounding his problem, Bopanna was forced into searching for a new partner after Joao Sousa was unable to travel to Australia on time after testing COVID-19 positive.

“Playing with Ben McLachlan from Japan in Australian open,” Bopanna told Reuters in a message on Saturday.

McLachlan is a New Zealand-born player who represents Japan. He will team up with China’s Duan Yingying for the mixed doubles.

In next week’s ATP event at Melbourne Park, Bopanna will partner Denmark’s Frederik Nielsen in the men’s doubles.

Denied training like most other players, Bopanna earlier told Reuters he had been relying on exercise bands and mats to stay fit.

Work On Kootupole Bridge On Karnataka-Kerala Border Resumes

Virajpet MLA K.G. Bopaiah recently inspected the work on a bridge across Kootupole near Makutta which provides connectivity between Karnataka and Kerala.

The bridge is at the Karnataka-Kerala border and is part of the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) road between Thalassery and Valavupara. The bridge work has resumed as Karnataka Wildlife Board has decided to give permission for the construction of the bridge.

The old bridge, built during the British era across Kootupole, has been providing interState connectivity at Makutta and it was narrow and in dilapidated condition. With the construction of Kannur International Airport, the density of vehicles on the old bridge had increased. To provide connectivity to the Airport, the Kerala Government had developed a 55-km road at an estimated cost of Rs. 360 crore till Kootupole.

However, the Karnataka Forest Department had stalled the work in 2017 considering that the land belonged to Brahmagiri Wildlife Division. Now, the work has resumed once again.Though the claim of Kerala was that the river is in its territory, the Karnataka authorities claimed that a portion of the bridge is in Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka and also they claimed that half the river belongs to them, following which the work had to be stopped.

The project has already missed many deadlines. Though Kerala had given the documents to assert its right over the river and the officials held meetings at various levels, there were many objections on the part of Karnataka authorities. This road is a major link between Kerala and Karnataka and it would be beneficial for the residents in many parts of Karnataka, including Kodagu to come to Kannur Airport.

Realising the importance of the bridge, Bopaiah had brought the issue of the stalling of work to the notice of Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, who in turn had brought it to the notice of the Central Government.

The Central Government cleared the hurdles for the bridge and the work has commenced. The MLA said that the Central and State Governments have given conditional approval for the work on the bridge. The completion of the bridge will benefit passengers travelling to Mysuru and Hassan from Kodagu.

The 122nd birth anniversary of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa was celebrated at Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa Circle (Metropole Hotel Circle) under the auspices of Kodava Samaja, Mysuru and Kodava Samaja Cultural and Sports Club, Vijayanagar, today.

Tributes were paid to the late Field Marshal by garlanding his bust and showering flower petals on it.

Farmers take out tractor rally from Kutta to B’luru

The tractor rally led by farmers was flagged-off at Kutta on Monday.

Urging the Central government to shelve the new farm laws and demanding support price for coffee, farmers and planters from Kodagu took out a tractor rally from Kutta, the border of Kodagu to Bengaluru, on Monday.

Gathering in large numbers, the farmers, along with their family members, including children, battled the cold weather and lashed out at the Central government.

The farmers seated in the tractors and jeeps raised slogans against the Central and state governments. They also demanded a minimum support price for coffee and pepper.

Probably for the first time in Kodagu, farmers, coffee planters, elected representatives from various political parties and labourers were part of the same protest.

The rally was held under the leadership of Raitha Sangha district president Kadyamada Manu Somaiah.

Speaking on the occasion, Kodava Federation president Kallichanda Vishnu Cariappa said that the farmers in the district have been toiling hard from the last three years. But, the crops have been destroyed in the recent untimely rainfall.

Having no other choice, the farmers have got down to the streets, demanding support from the government, he said.

Rajya Raitha Sangha president Badagalapura Nagendra said that the farmers have decided to take to the stir to claim their right.

Farmers from the district should be provided with a major share in the compensation announced by the Central and the state governments as they have incurred huge losses, he said.

MLC Shantheyanda Veena Achaiah said that the government should give up its stubbornness and should listen to the farmers’ issues.

The rally comprising tractors, jeeps, cars and bikes travelled to Mysuru via T Shettigeri, Hudikeri, Ponnampet, Gonikoppa, Titimati and Anechowkuru.

A protest will be held in front of Freedom Park in Bengaluru on January 26.

ZP member Mukkatira Shivu Madappa, Lt Col Baleyada Kalaiah, Codava National Council president N U Nachappa, former MLC C S Arun Machaiah and others were present.

21st branch of Kodagu District Coop Bank opened

MLA M P Appachu Ranjan inaugurates the 21st branch of Kodagu District Cooperative Bank at Kodlipete.

The people of the district are responsible for the progress of District Cooperative Bank. The bank should lend loans to only those from the district and not to those hailing from outside, said MLA M P Appachu Ranjan. 

He was speaking after inaugurating the 21st branch of Kodagu District Cooperative Bank at Kodlipete.

The bank officials should interact with customers with the utmost patience to compete with the nationalised commercial banks, he added. 

Cooperative Bank president Kodangera P Ganapathi said that the bank was started in 1921. To commemorate the 100th year, the 21st branch has been started at Kodlipete. The centenary Bhavana foundation will be laid in the month of June.

MLA K G Bopaiah and MLC M P Sunil Subramani also spoke on the occasion.

Two Cadets From Coorg Battalion For Republic Day Parade In Delhi

Two cadets from 19 KAR NCC Battalion (Coorg Battalion) in Kodagu of Karnataka-Goa Directorate have been selected for the Annual Republic Day (R-Day) Parade in New Delhi on Jan. 26. They will perform in the NCC contingent that will march through the Rajpath greeting dignitaries including President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Cadet M.S. Indrajith, a second BBA student of Field Marshal K.M Cariappa College in Madikeri, will take part in Prime Minister’s Rally. He is the son of M.G. Subramani  and Sujatha. 

Cadet C.T. Yashasvi, also from Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College, is a second BSc student. Daughter of Manu Thammiaha and Samitha, she will take part in the All India Rajpath Rally. 

College Principal Dr. C. Jagat Thimmaiah, congratulating the cadets for representing the College in National-level, said every year at least one cadet from the College takes part in the Republic Day Parade. 

The cadets have been selected and trained by Commanding Officer Col. Chethan Deman and NCC Officer Maj. Raghav of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College, according to a press release.

Kodagu district literary convention on Jan 29, 30

Kannada Sahitya Parishat will organise the district-level Kannada literary convention and the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Kannada Sahitya Parishat on January 29 and 30, said Kannada Sahitya Parishat district president Lokesh Sagar.

Addressing reporters here on Monday, he said that litterateur Mandepanda Geetha Mandanna will preside over the literary convention.

The programme will be held at Rao Bahaddur Muttanna stage in C S Venkappaiah auditorium. The welcome arch is named after D J Padmanabha.

Madikeri tahsildar Mahesh will hoist the National flag and CMC commissioner Ramdas will hoist the state flag on January 29, he said.

Superintendent of Police Kshama Mishra will flag-off a procession of the convention president at the main road on the day at 9 am.

Madikeri Taluk Panchayat president Shobha Mohan will inaugurate the book exhibition and other stalls.

Various sessions will be held on January 30.

Young poets meet will be held at Kavya Kaveri Vedike at Brahmagiri auditorium.

Senior litterateur Jaraganahalli Shivashankar will inaugurate. Thirty poets will take part.

Kannada Sahitya Parishat honourary secretary Koodakandi Dayananda, director Kodi Chandrashekhar and Madikeri taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Kudekal Santhosh were present.

Robin Uthappa joins Chennai Super Kings from Rajasthan Royals

Uthappa only joined Rajasthan in 2020, having previously played for Kolkata Knight Riders. He has also represented Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Pune Warriors India.

Former India batsman Robin Uthappa has left Rajasthan Royals to join Chennai Super Kings  in a cash deal.

The trade for the 35-year-old comes a day after all eight Indian Premier League franchises announced their player retention lists, with Rajasthan releasing former captain Steve Smith and Chennai – on the back of a dismal 2020 campaign – letting go of several experienced players.

Kedar Jadhav, Harbhajan Singh, Monu Singh, Piyush Chawla and Murali Vijay were all released by Stephen Fleming’s side, with former Australia allrounder Shane Watson also retiring.

Uthappa only joined Rajasthan in 2020, having previously played for Kolkata Knight Riders. He has also represented Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Pune Warriors India.

But he scored just 196 runs in 12 games for his fifth IPL team, struggling for consistency and adding to the pressure on Smith, Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson and Ben Stokes.

“We do have depth with regards to openers in our squad, therefore when the offer came from CSK, we thought it was a good opportunity for all parties involved. We’d like to wish Robbie all the best for this season at CSK and his future beyond that.”

Coffee growers to join Jan. 26 jatha in Bengaluru to seek MSP for their crop

They complain of raw deal from State government

Coffee growers from Kodagu, who are seeking minimum support price (MSP) for coffee, will join the farmers’ protest scheduled to be held in Bengaluru on January 26 against the Centre’s farm bills.

The coffee growers are seeking to draw attention to their predicament over coffee prices remaining stagnant for more than 20 years while the costs they incurred on labour and other agricultural inputs including fertilizers have increased manifold.

“One 50 kg bag of robusta coffee used to fetch ₹3,000 in the mid- and late nineties. The price has remained unchanged more than two decades later also” said Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) leader from Kodagu Manu Somaiah.

Coffee growers are putting up with the stagnant prices of coffee while shouldering the burden of rising costs of labour and other agricultural inputs, he said and sought to know why the State is refusing to extend MSP to coffee when neighbouring Kerala was extending the same to its growers.

“About a week ago, we held a meeting and decided to press for our demand for MSP for coffee”, said Mr. Somaiah. “When Kerala, which produces barely 20 per cent of the country’s coffee production, can extend MSP, why can’t Karnataka, which accounts for more than two-thirds of India’s coffee production do the same?”, he questioned.

He said their appeals for MSP are met with the standard reply that coffee was a commercial crop that is not entitled for support price. “But, when Kerala government can do it, what logical explanation can Karnataka government give?”, he asked.

The coffee growers of Kodagu have been at the receiving end of nature’s fury during the last three years when the region was struck by landslides and floods, causing widespread damage to the crop.

Mr. Somaiah recalled that the coffee growers were receiving remunerative prices when it was regulated by Coffee Board till the early nineties. But, it shifted to open market policy soon thereafter on the same promise that the present farm bills are assuring – that the farmers will earn more. But, it was not to be, he regretted adding that the prices are now determined by the trading in New York and London Stock Exchanges.

Mr. Somaiah said the coffee growers in Kodagu are also upset with the State government and Centre over the falling price of black pepper, which is grown as inter-crop. The price of black pepper had reached ₹900 per kg till the Centre started allowing imported pepper from Vietnam and other countries to flood the domestic market and bring down the prices to the level of ₹300 per kg, he lamented.

The coffee growers of Kodagu are joining forces with the farmers from the rest of the State, who are planning to gather in Bengaluru on January 26. The coffee growers from Kodagu will gather at Kutta on January 25 before leaving in about 150 vehicles towards Bengaluru. The coffee growers will hold demonstrations in Ponnampet and Gonikoppa before spending the night in Mandya and proceeding to Freedom Park in Bengaluru on January 26.
