159th Book Of Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota Out

Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota is relentlessly striving to include Kodava language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and to accord linguistic minority status to Kodava community, said Chattangada Ravi Subbaiah, President of Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota.

He was addressing the gathering at a book release event and the logo launch event to mark the silver jubilee of Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota at Mysuru Kodava Samaja in Vijayanagar recently. The event was jointly organised by Mysuru Kodava Samaja, Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota and Lopamudra Kodava Association.

The Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota has been promoting Kodava language and literature since 1994 and has brought out many publications that have become popular.

“In order to encourage writing in Kodava language, the Yelthkarada Koota, in 2000 came out with ‘Popular Kodava Literature Series’ and so far, it has brought out 157 books. The 158th and 159th books are being released now,” he said.

The 158th book is titled “Bollira Cup” written by Pemmanda Meera Biddappa and sponsored by Ajjamada Shankaru Nachappa. This book was released by retired vice chancellor Prof. Kambeyanda C. Belliappa while the 159th book “Pookola” was released by sponsor Vallanda Prashanth Ponnanna. The book has been written by Jammada Babitha Poovanna.

Prof. Belliappa lauded the efforts of Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota in not depending on government funds and doing yeomen service to the community with the funds donated by philanthropists. He announced that he will donate Rs. 10,000 to the organisation.

President of Lopamudra Kodava Association Machchamada K. Devaiah, Mysuru Kodava Samaja President Ballyamanda M. Nanaiah, Secretary Malachira Ponnappa, Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota Directors Kalimada Motaiah, Bojjangada Nithin Nanjappa, Secretary Ammanichanda Praveen Chengappa and others were present.

On the same occasion, silver jubilee logo of Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota was released. The silver jubilee celebrations will be held in December this year.

Self-Employment Generation: Kodagu Adjudged 1st In The State, Mysuru Stands 5th

Mysuru district has been adjudged 5th in employment generation under the Chief Minister (Self) Employment Generation Programme (CMEGP) implemented in the State through the respective District Industries Centre.

During 2018-19 in Mysuru district, the goal was set to register 79 beneficiaries under the programme and 75 beneficiaries have already commenced various business activities utilising the scheme thus achieving an efficiency of 95%

Kodagu district has bagged the first place and Mysuru District Industries Centre Joint Director D.K. Lingaraj, who is also in-charge of Kodagu district has expressed happiness over the performance of the two districts.

The achievement in Kodagu district was 125% with the targeted beneficiaries swelling from 16 to 21 with many of them providing employment to others.

MSME Directorate Commissioner G.C. Vrushabendra Murthy has sent a letter of appreciation to D.K. Lingaraj.

In Mysuru district 24 women are among the beneficiaries stepping into the fields of beauty care, catering, spice mixes and hotel industry, according to the press release.

Tambukutheera won the Highlanders Cup Hockey tournament and Kaliyanda won the Warriors Cup, at Highlanders Invited Cup Hockey tournament and Warriors Champion Cup, held at General K S Thimayya Stadium in Napoklu on Sunday.

In the Highlanders hockey tourney, Tambukutheera notched up a victory against Mukkateera by a score of 2-0. The winning team won a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a trophy while the runners up received Rs 25,000 in cash and a trophy.

In the match, Sukesh scored a goal within the ninth minute of the match. Deepu secured another goal in the 10th minute. In spite of three penalty corners, Mukkateera team could not convert them into goals.

In the Warriors Cup, Kaliyanda edged past Cheppudira by 4-3 in the tiebreaker. Both the teams could not score a goal by fulltime.

Speaking on the occasion, entrepreneur Maleyanda C Nanaiah called upon the people to save nature for the future generation.

MLC Veena Acchaiah, former Hockey players Paradanda Sadananaiah, Areyada Babychinnappa and Cheppudira Cariappa were felicitated.

Nehru Mantapa to attract tourists with its new look

The Nehru Mantapa, a watchtower, is all set to attract tourists with its new look.

Due to lack of maintenance, the Mantapa had also lost its sheen. Now, however, the tourism department has taken up development work at a cost of Rs 18 lakh.

Weeds grown all over the surroundings had covered the entire Mantapa. As a result, the visitors were not finding it appealing or interesting to visit the Mantapa. It had also become a haven for miscreants and drunkards.

The Kodagu Nirmithi Kendra has taken up the renovation work. The work on the new wall for the Mantapa, steps, electricity connections and seating arrangements have been taken up. About 60% of the works have been completed.

The Nehru Mantapa is situated on a hilly range and the visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature and take in the scenic view. Eight granite benches have been laid for seating arrangements for the visitors. Attractive steps have been installed for the visitors to reach the Mantapa.

In addition, flower pots will be kept on either side of the steps, said Nirmithi Kendra Project Director Sachin. The work will be completed and the Mantapa will be handed over to the CMC within a month.

He said that in the interest of the safety of tourist, CCTV camera will be installed at Nehru Mantapa. Parking facilities will be provided near the entrance.

The tourists from outside the district visit Raja Seat, Rajara Gadduge, Fort, Abbeyfalls, Omkareshwara Temple and return. But Nehru Mantapa situated adjacent to Raja Seat is not noticed by the tourists. With the development works, Nehru Mantapa will be added in the itinerary of the tourists, he added.

Sachin said entry fee will be introduced at Nehru Mantapa in the future. A security person will be deployed for the safety of visitors. The CMC will recruit a security personnel.

“Tourists who visit Madikeri wish to visit a viewpoint. With the Nehru Mantapa being developed, it will be a new tourist spot,” said Santhosh Acharya, a resident of Indira Nagara.

History

It is said that in 1957, the then prime minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had visited Kodagu and had enjoyed the scenic beauty from the spot.

To commemorate his visit, a Mantapa was constructed and named after him.

Hockey Brings Joy To Flood-Ravaged Kodava Families

Terming the decision to drop the traditional Kodava family hockey tournament this year in the wake of last year’s natural calamity that ravaged Kodagu district as a wrong move, Kodagu Press Club President Ajjamada Ramesh Kuttappa has regretted that the 22-year-old record of the tournament has been broken.

The annual Kodava Hockey Festival, which is usually held in the months of April and May every year, was called off for 2019 by Kodava Hockey Academy and Mukkatira family as floods ravaged the district. The month-long tournament was supposed to be hosted by Mukkatira family and was scheduled to be held at Balugodu Kodava Samaja grounds. The hockey festival in 2020 will be hosted by the Mukkatira family followed by Adengada family in 2021.

Kuttappa was speaking as the chief guest at the Invitational Hockey Tournament organised by Kakkabe’s Highland Club for flood-affected families at General K.S. Thimayya Stadium near Napoklu Cheriyaparambu recently.

Regretting that the Kodava Hockey Academy has lost its existence by failing to host Kodava Family Hockey Tournament that was being organised for the past 22 years without a break, he lauded Kakkabe Highland Club for hosting the tournament which has brought some joy to flood-ravaged families.

Kodava Hockey Academy Vice-President Kaliyanda Nanaiah, who spoke after inaugurating the tournament, said that Kodagu is home to hockey festivals and several sports personalities from the district have made a mark in international tournaments.

He thanked the organisers for hosting the tournament for families ravaged by the natural calamity that stuck Kodagu last year. Bhagamandala Bhagandeshwara Temple Committee President Biddatanda Thammaiah and Nadikerianda Tej Poovaiah too spoke. Highland Club President Apparanda Sagar Ganapathy presided. Shambhu Mandappa, Harish Poovaiah, Manu Somaiah, Aruna Baby, Dr. Poovaiah, Raghu Somaiah and others were present.

Civil judge (senior division) court in Ponnampet

The High Court has given its nod to start the Court of Civil Judge (Senior Division) in Ponnampet as Ponnampet will be upgraded as taluk centre.

The court will operate from the second floor of the court complex in Ponnampet, said Bar Association President S D Kaverappa.

Stating that the court will function from the first week of May, he said that the necessary furniture is being provided at the new court. The people of the four hoblis can avail the facility of the court.

Till now, people from Ponnampet, Balele, Hudikeri and Srimangala attended Virajpet court for their legal necessities. In future, they can approach the Ponnampet court.

Association secretary M D Rakesh, vice president K D Muttappa, joint secretary B R Vinod, senior lawyers Maneyapanda Nanaiah, K M Ganapathy and Ajjikuttira K Poonaccha were present.

The calculations about who will be elected from Kodagu-Mysuru Lok Sabha seat, which have started with the electoral fortunes of candidates being sealed in electronic voting machines (EVMs) after the election on Thursday, will continue till the votes are counted on May 23.

The calculations on who will win or lose is being done on the basis of votes cast at booth level. Owing to a tough competition between the BJP and the Congress-JD(S) coalition in the constituency, both the parties have gone out of their way to woo the voters.

A voter turnout of 68.82 percent was registered in Mysuru-Kodagu constituency. Kodagu district has recorded a voting of 74.67%. The voting percentage in the 2014 parliamentary elections in the district was 71.88. Thus, the voter turnout has witnessed an increase by 2.79% when compared to the previous election.

Out of 2,21,157 voters in Madikeri Legislative Assembly constituency, 1,69,725 people have cast their vote, registering a voting percentage of 76.74. Of the total 2,19,573 voters in Virajpet Assembly constituency, 1,59,387 people have exercised their franchise (72.58%).

In 2014, 1,55,682 out of 2,10,819 people had cast their vote in Madikeri Assembly constituency. The voting percentage was 73.84. In Virajpet, 1,45,752 out of 2,08,514 voters had exercised their franchise in 2014. The voting percentage was 69.90.

There is an increase of 21,397 voters this time, compared to 2014. As many as 27,678 additional votes have been cast in this election. The BJP candidate had obtained a lead of 32,000 votes during the previous Lok Sabha election.

The question on whether the margin will decrease or increase due to the coalition of JD(S) and Congress parties, will be known when the counting of votes begins.

Kudos to PWD voters

As many as 3,022 out of 3,076 PWD (persons with disabilities) voters have exercised their duty, drawing appreciation from all sides. The percentage of voting by the PWD is a whopping 98.24.

The good turnout of PWDs has been attributed to the free vehicle facility provided by the district administration.

The commemoration of Jewish seer Itamar Oren Narada Muni was observed at the seer’s memorial in Attur village in Ponnampet on Wednesday.

Donors of the land, Kuppanada Raja and Chaya Nanjappa on whose farm the memorial is located, announced that a study centre will be established in two acres of land near the tomb of Itamar Oren Narada Muni.

The centre will be devoted to the purpose of strengthening the relationship between India and Israel.

Speaking on the occasion, Rashtriya Swayam Sevaka Sangha Saha Karyavaha Mukund said that both India and Israel have been the targets of terrorism. The two countries should come up with a united strategy to fight terror. While India has been working on peacebuilding in South Asia, Israel has been striving to instil peace in Arab countries. The motto behind the efforts of both countries is the same.

Sessions were held on the topics, ‘Challenges Before India and Israel in Improving their bond’ and ‘Improving the bond between India and Israel on Cultural and Economic Fronts’.

The sessions were moderated by Swami Dayananda, Swami Vijnananda and Itamar Theodore. Immanuel, Sankar Sanu, Ravikumar, Satya Bansal, Tapan Ghosh, Michelle Harrison and Rajani Sareen took part.

Homage was paid to the seer on the occasion. Vedic chants were recited.

Followers of Itamar Oren Narada Muni performed prayers.

Smiles are back in Kodagu’s tottering hospitality sector

After last year’s landslides, hotels and resorts in the coffee land saw 100 per cent occupancy for the first time this weekend.

After a gap of almost a year, hotels and resorts in Kodagu, which is back on its feet after last year’s worst-ever floods and landslides, have registered 100% occupancy.

The hospitality sector was badly hit since the tragedy in the district and it took almost a year for the industry to witness tourists coming in droves to the land of coffee.

Hotels and resorts in Kodagu have about 6,000 rooms, and almost all of them had been occupied since Friday. “We need to remember this weekend forever as it gave a new lease of life to the hotel industry, which was in a miserable state with tourists staying away from the hill station. This had forced many promoters to put up their hotels for sale,” said Nagendra Prasad, President, Kodagu Hotels, Restaurants and Resorts Association.

He told The Hindu that about 30,000 people are directly employed in the tourism industry in Kodagu of which the hospitality sector accounts for about 6,000 employees. As many as one lakh people are indirectly dependent on the industry for their livelihood. “People can breathe easy if tourism thrives in Kodagu. If weather permits, the season can be extended till June first week before the monsoon sets in,” he observed.

One of the reasons for the increase in footfall was the end of exams, and also elections in this part of the region. People visit the hill stations to beat the heat. But, this time, even Kodagu has not been spared with the temperature hovering around 32 degree Celsius, which is high by Kodagu’s standards, according to the stakeholders.

“Some parts of Kodagu had rains over the last week. A few more spells of rains will cool the coffee land, making it comfortable for visitors. After June, the season starts only in October for Dasara vacation. So, we are keeping our fingers crossed and expecting the season in May to be better,” said Mr. Prasad.

Unconfirmed statistics put the number of rooms in home-stays at 20,000. Kodagu alone has 4,000 of them. If rooms in hotels and resorts are added, Kodagu has over 30,000 rooms. All these used to get filled up before floods struck the land, the stakeholders said.

Worrying times
Though the hill station had recovered from the natural calamity, tourism had not picked up despite efforts from both the government as well as the stakeholders. The hospitality sector was unable to cope with the loss of business.

“We had been telling throughout the year that Kodagu is safe to visit. The turnout since Friday showed people believed in what we said,” said Mr. Prasad.

Kodagu Swimmer Heads For Malaysian Event

Baduvamanda Aditya Bopanna will be representing India in the 62nd Malaysia Open Swimming Championship to be held from April 24 to 28 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Competing in National and State Swimming events, Aditya Bopanna has been training since age six and specialises in backstroke and freestyle sprint events.

Representing Karnataka and a winner of many national medals in various swimming events, Bopanna trains at the Nettakallappa Aquatic Centre in Bengaluru. He is currently pursuing his Second PUC at Vijaya College, Bengaluru.

Probably he is the first Kodava swimmer to represent India at an international event. Aditya is the son of Baduvamanda Cariappa and Sapna of Pollibetta in Virajpet. Aditya Bopanna excels in studies too and has scored 80.6 percent in Class 10 CBSE. For Aditya, getting this percentage after swimming and studying together is actually pretty good. “I squeeze in the free time I get during swimming for studies and I study almost every day after my swimming classes. Swimming has taken most of my life and has become a part of me now,” he says
