The ‘Yashaswi’ enterprise initiated under ‘Project Coorg’ programme of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan has been quite successful, and from Sunday, the Yashaswi brand spices will be marketed on wheels.
The scheme was started to provide support to women victims from Kaluru village in Kodagu, who were affected by flash-floods and landslides.
Project Coorg Head Balaji Kashyap said that a well-equipped van has been sponsored by the Kodava Koota based in North America, exclusively for the sale of spices. The mobile spices shop will move across Kodagu district.
The spices prepared and packed by the victims are being marketed at the stalls in Raja Seat premises and the Child Welfare Committee in Madikeri, as well. Apart from spices, there are coffee and honey under the same brand name.

The second phase of the study on Kodava Genealogy began on May 1, said Codava National Council President Nandineravanda U Nachappa.
Addressing reporters in Madikeri on Friday, he said that the features of Kodava community are being studied. The objective of the study is to provide statutory protection to the Kodavas.
The study is being done under the supervision of the Central and the state governments, he said.
The study in the second phase includes the subjects of ‘Devanele’, traditional healing methods in Kodagu, tribes, folk sports, agriculture, Kodava almanac, festivals, ‘Oor mand’, ‘Nadmand kol’, ‘Manepatt’, ‘Kail poldh’ and ‘Kaveri Changradi’.
Nachappa added that the study of the social, educational and financial conditions of Kodavas was carried out in the first phase.

Abhishek’s first film, directed by Nagshekar with DOP by Satya Hegde, will have many specials. The romantic drama, made under Sandesh Productions, has been shot in a record number of locations. Set against a biking backdrop, the film’s second half is mostly shot in picturesque Switzerland. A song and a few scenes are shot in Malaysia. Having got a U/A certification, the film will hit theatres on May 31.

The state government on Thursday revoked the temporary ban on conversion of land in the flood-hit Kodagu district.
The ban had come into effect after last year’s devastating floods washed away large chunks of land in the coffee district.
The Revenue Department on Thursday ordered tahsildars and assistant commissioners to allow conversion of land up to 15 to 20 cents for building houses by the locals after obtaining a ground report.
“Several people have been submitting applications seeking the conversion of land to build houses for a living. But since the floods, the government had ordered temporary ban on conversion of lands for non-agricultural purposes. But keeping in mind the public request, the government has directed to allow conversion of land up to 15 to 20 cents for building houses by the locals.”
The state government while revoking the temporary ban has also laid down certain conditions to prevent damages to the properties in future due to any natural calamity.
As per the conditions, no permission shall be given for construction of buildings in non-stable areas so identified by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in its report; the buildings shall be at least 10 meters away from the rivers and rivulets and conversion shall not be allowed along the valleys and on those lands which had witnessed landslide in 2018.

Den Thimmaiah emerged as the fastest driver at the National level 4-wheel Autocross Championship organised at Begoorkolli.
Organised at the fields belonging to the members of Chendira, Ippumada, Chekkera and Thethira families by JCI Ponnampet Golden, he emerged victorious as he clocked in at 2.02 minutes at the 850-meter rally course.
He also won the Coorg Local Open, 1,400-1,600cc category and Indian Open categories, adding three victories to his name.
In ‘The Coorg Local Open’ category, Den Thimmaiah won the first place, followed by Kokengada Darshan and Karavanda Thimmiah respectively.
Mohamad Shiek won the first place, Shrihari the second and C.K. Somanna the third place in the 800 cc category.
In the 1,001-1,400 cc category, the first place was won by Ismail Khan, second by Harshad Pasha and the third by Sparsh Nanjappa.
Den Thimmaiah won the first place while Dhruva Chandrashekar and Kokengada Darshan won the second and third place respectively in the 1,400-1,600 cc category.
The first place was bagged by Den Thimmaiah while the second and third place were won by Dhruva Chandrashekar and Roopesh respectively in the Indian Open Class.
In the XUV class, Mekerira Kariappa won the first place while Shriganesh won the second place.
In the Women’s category, Puttichanda Dayan Somaiah won the first place and Pooja Karumbaiah won the second place.
Over 40 participants took part in the event.

Sunday special: Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa made it a memorable day for India.
Become the first to win the Asian title at the same time
Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa emerged champions in the Asian squash championship here on Sunday. This is the first time two Indians have finished on top in the same tournament.
An unprecedented feat that eluded the Indians in Chennai two years ago became a reality in Malaysia when Joshna, the second seed, successfully defended her title shocking the top seed Annie Au of Hong Kong 11-5, 8-11, 11-6, 11-6.
Soon after, Ghosal, the top seed and finalist last year, ensured there was no slip-up this time when he downed the fourth seed Leo Au Chun Ming, also of Hong Kong, 11-9, 11-2, 11-8.
Sweet revenge
Joshna, who had lost to Annie in the Macau Open last month and seen her head-to-head record drop to 12 losses in 20 meetings, played with purpose and conviction. Though she suffered a blip in the second, she recovered to win the next two in style.
In the men’s summit clash, Ghosal proved the master. Except for a brief period in the first and third games, there was little the Hong Kong player could do to match the Indian who achieved his maiden success at this level.
“Happy to win the Asian title for the first time. I had come close in the past, so it is hugely satisfying to finally win it. Hopefully, this will lead to further success in the future,” said Ghosal.
“I thought I really played well in the final. I had lost to Annie a few times prior to this and so I had come prepared. Most importantly, I found the length and that was the key. I am very happy to defend the title,” said Joshna.
Big achievement
“Winning two titles is an achievement that has come for the first time. I congratulate Saurav and Joshna and wish them more success in their endeavours in the future,” said N. Ramachandran, Patron, Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI).
National coach Cyrus Poncha said: “What was missed two years ago has been done for the first time. It is a massive achievement.”
Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota is relentlessly striving to include Kodava language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and to accord linguistic minority status to Kodava community, said Chattangada Ravi Subbaiah, President of Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota.
He was addressing the gathering at a book release event and the logo launch event to mark the silver jubilee of Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota at Mysuru Kodava Samaja in Vijayanagar recently. The event was jointly organised by Mysuru Kodava Samaja, Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota and Lopamudra Kodava Association.
The Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota has been promoting Kodava language and literature since 1994 and has brought out many publications that have become popular.
“In order to encourage writing in Kodava language, the Yelthkarada Koota, in 2000 came out with ‘Popular Kodava Literature Series’ and so far, it has brought out 157 books. The 158th and 159th books are being released now,” he said.
The 158th book is titled “Bollira Cup” written by Pemmanda Meera Biddappa and sponsored by Ajjamada Shankaru Nachappa. This book was released by retired vice chancellor Prof. Kambeyanda C. Belliappa while the 159th book “Pookola” was released by sponsor Vallanda Prashanth Ponnanna. The book has been written by Jammada Babitha Poovanna.
Prof. Belliappa lauded the efforts of Kodava Thakk Yelthkarada Koota in not depending on government funds and doing yeomen service to the community with the funds donated by philanthropists. He announced that he will donate Rs. 10,000 to the organisation.

Mysuru district has been adjudged 5th in employment generation under the Chief Minister (Self) Employment Generation Programme (CMEGP) implemented in the State through the respective District Industries Centre.
During 2018-19 in Mysuru district, the goal was set to register 79 beneficiaries under the programme and 75 beneficiaries have already commenced various business activities utilising the scheme thus achieving an efficiency of 95%
Kodagu district has bagged the first place and Mysuru District Industries Centre Joint Director D.K. Lingaraj, who is also in-charge of Kodagu district has expressed happiness over the performance of the two districts.
The achievement in Kodagu district was 125% with the targeted beneficiaries swelling from 16 to 21 with many of them providing employment to others.
MSME Directorate Commissioner G.C. Vrushabendra Murthy has sent a letter of appreciation to D.K. Lingaraj.
In Mysuru district 24 women are among the beneficiaries stepping into the fields of beauty care, catering, spice mixes and hotel industry, according to the press release.

Tambukutheera team which won the Highlanders Invited Cup hockey tournament held at General K S Thimayya Stadium in Napoklu
Tambukutheera won the Highlanders Cup Hockey tournament and Kaliyanda won the Warriors Cup, at Highlanders Invited Cup Hockey tournament and Warriors Champion Cup, held at General K S Thimayya Stadium in Napoklu on Sunday.
In the Highlanders hockey tourney, Tambukutheera notched up a victory against Mukkateera by a score of 2-0. The winning team won a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a trophy while the runners up received Rs 25,000 in cash and a trophy.
In the match, Sukesh scored a goal within the ninth minute of the match. Deepu secured another goal in the 10th minute. In spite of three penalty corners, Mukkateera team could not convert them into goals.
In the Warriors Cup, Kaliyanda edged past Cheppudira by 4-3 in the tiebreaker. Both the teams could not score a goal by fulltime.
Speaking on the occasion, entrepreneur Maleyanda C Nanaiah called upon the people to save nature for the future generation.
MLC Veena Acchaiah, former Hockey players Paradanda Sadananaiah, Areyada Babychinnappa and Cheppudira Cariappa were felicitated.

Renovation work on Nehru Mantapa in progress in Madikeri.
The Nehru Mantapa, a watchtower, is all set to attract tourists with its new look.
Due to lack of maintenance, the Mantapa had also lost its sheen. Now, however, the tourism department has taken up development work at a cost of Rs 18 lakh.
Weeds grown all over the surroundings had covered the entire Mantapa. As a result, the visitors were not finding it appealing or interesting to visit the Mantapa. It had also become a haven for miscreants and drunkards.
The Kodagu Nirmithi Kendra has taken up the renovation work. The work on the new wall for the Mantapa, steps, electricity connections and seating arrangements have been taken up. About 60% of the works have been completed.
The Nehru Mantapa is situated on a hilly range and the visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature and take in the scenic view. Eight granite benches have been laid for seating arrangements for the visitors. Attractive steps have been installed for the visitors to reach the Mantapa.
In addition, flower pots will be kept on either side of the steps, said Nirmithi Kendra Project Director Sachin. The work will be completed and the Mantapa will be handed over to the CMC within a month.
He said that in the interest of the safety of tourist, CCTV camera will be installed at Nehru Mantapa. Parking facilities will be provided near the entrance.
The tourists from outside the district visit Raja Seat, Rajara Gadduge, Fort, Abbeyfalls, Omkareshwara Temple and return. But Nehru Mantapa situated adjacent to Raja Seat is not noticed by the tourists. With the development works, Nehru Mantapa will be added in the itinerary of the tourists, he added.
Sachin said entry fee will be introduced at Nehru Mantapa in the future. A security person will be deployed for the safety of visitors. The CMC will recruit a security personnel.
“Tourists who visit Madikeri wish to visit a viewpoint. With the Nehru Mantapa being developed, it will be a new tourist spot,” said Santhosh Acharya, a resident of Indira Nagara.
History
It is said that in 1957, the then prime minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had visited Kodagu and had enjoyed the scenic beauty from the spot.
To commemorate his visit, a Mantapa was constructed and named after him.
