Gonimaroor school gets Parisara Mitra award

Gonimarur school has bagged the district level Parisara Mitra award given by Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Kodagu district administration, Bharath Scouts and Guides and Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, for the year 2014-15.

One hundred eighty one schools, across the district, had applied for the award. 21 schools have been selected among them.

10 schools will be identified as yellow schools and will be awarded Rs one thousand cash prize, certificate and shield, 10 schools will be known as green schools and will get Rs two thousand cash prize and shield and Gonimaroor school will be recognised as Parisara Mitra school with Rs ten thousand cash prize, certificate and shield. The school which started in 1968, has 68 students from first to seventh standard.

Around 50 variety of flower bearing plants have been grown in the school garden. Each students has been given responsibility of a plant and the plant is named after the student, with a tag on it.

The students look after the plant and water the plant every day. The vegetables required for the mid-day meals are grown by the students themselves. There are more than 101 trees including mango, jack fruit, gooseberry and neem trees, all planted and grown by students. The dry leaves are collected by students to prepare organic manure. Also, there are medicinal plants. The toilets at the school are well maintained.

The natural wind are light are utilised at its best and also, the water management is efficiently done. Last year, the school had won the second place in the district level.

The school has also bagged district level awards twice in science modeling. The school has a library which is managed by students themselves.

The school development and management committee comprises 13 members as is presided by Siddalingappa. The committee has provided sports equipment to the students.

S P Mareena is working as the Headmistress of the school and there are four teachers including H R Sunitha and Nagaveni. School teacher H S Rajappa said that the Parisara Mitra award is the outcome of the contributions and hard work of students, teachers and the school development and management committee.

Coffee Board to monetise ‘Coffees of India’ logos

New initiative expected to encourage and promote the Indian brew in overseas markets

Exporters, traders, roasters and curers displaying the ‘Coffees of India’ and the other regional/speciality coffee trademarks on their packages will now have to seek the Coffee Board’s permission to do so and pay a fee for using each logo.

The State-run Coffee Board, which had devised the unique identities/logos and trademarks under the umbrella brand ‘Coffees of India’, has filed for registration of some 19 logos as the Certification of Trademarks.

Issuing certificates
The Registrar of Trademarks, Chennai, has issued the registration certificate for about nine logos including the Robusta Kaapi Royale, Pulneys, Annamalais, Chikmagalur, Coorg and Coffee Swami.

Another set of ten applications for logos such as Mysore Nuggets and Monsooned Malabar are pending registration, though provisional numbers have been issued for the same.

Coffee Board is the sole custodian of the trademark of all logos and those planning to use them on their packets, sacks and publicity material will have to obtain written permission.

Payment details
Exporters or roasters seeking to use the logos will have to apply to the Board in a prescribed format with samples of the beans or instant/roast and ground coffees.

The board has fixed a fee of ₹10,000 for use of each logo and ₹2,500 for every additional logo.

Coffee Board officials said the rationale behind registering the trademarks/logos was to regulate and prevent the misuse. Also, the new initiative is expected to help encourage and promote Indian coffees in overseas markets. However, the trade is divided on the Board’s move to regulate and monetise the logos.“It is good idea.

The logos would enhance the visibility of Indian coffees in the overseas markets,” said Ramesh Rajah, President of the Coffee Exporters Association.

It will also help create awareness among the consumers, Rajah said adding that “the Board should be given a chance.” However, some exporters, who have developed their own brands, do not see major benefits from these trademarks or logos.

Coffee exports
“The logos will help the newcomers the most,” said Ashok Kurian of Balanoor Plantations, who exports under the Balanoor brand.

Coffee exports during January 1-27 were down 32 per cent, provisionally, at 14,672 tonnes against 21,573 tonnes in the corresponding period a year ago.

In 2014, coffee exports stood at 3.01 lakh tonnes valued at ₹4,984 crore or $818 million.

Crop size estimates
The Board, in its latest post monsoon estimates, has pegged the 2014-15 crop size at 3.31 lakh tonnes, a four per cent decline over its post blossom estimate of 3.44 lakh tonnes (lt), primarily due to lower arabica crop that faced a severe pest attack, erratic rainfall and a cyclone.

However, the latest estimates for 2014-15 are 8.7 per cent higher than last year’s final estimate of 3.04 lt. Arabica output for the current season is pegged at 99,600 tonnes, while production of Robusta is expected to 2.31 lt for the 2014-15 season, a decline of 5.6 per cent and 3.28 per cent respectively over the post blossom estimate.

City Cops get President’s Medal

Two Policemen from the city are among the 20 cops from the State, who have been conferred President’s Police Medal for meritorious service on the occasion of Republic Day yesterday.

Also, four other Police Officers from the State were conferred with the President’s medal for distinguished service.

B.M. Ravindra and N.U. Aiyanna, both Head Constables at 5th Battalion, KSRP Mysuru, are the city cops who have been conferred the Medal.

B.M. Ravindra, originally hailing from Napoklu in Madikeri Taluk, has been serving in the Department for over 30 years while Aiyanna, who hails from Kushalnagar in Kodagu district, is associated with the Department for over 34 years.

The northern command of the Indian Army has dedicated this year’s celebration of the army day on January 15 to the people of the state both in war and peacetime.

“The Army Day is being celebrated across the northern command with a theme, Indian Army: Friend of the Awam – In War and Peace,” Udhampur-based spokesman of the Northern Command, Col S D Goswami said.

He said that even as the Army defends the borders and combats terrorism, it has shown an exceptional spirit of service when called upon to support internal security or in response to natural disasters.

“Reiterating its commitment towards the Awam, a large number of medical and veterinary camps are being organised at various locations. For the school children and the youth, awareness lectures are specially being held at many places,” Goswami said.

He said that the army units across the Northern Command are celebrating army day that is being observed on January 15 every year.

“The event is of great significance and is observed to commemorate the assumption of the appointment of Lt Gen (later Field Marshal) K M Cariappa as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, in 1949,” he said.

He said the Army has always played a pivotal role in nation building while displaying exemplary professionalism, commitment and bravery not only in defending the nation but also in all tasks entrusted to it.

“This day inspires the troops to continue to enrich the glorious traditions of the Indian Army with their dedication and sacrifice. It is also a solemn occasion to salute the martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty and also an opportunity to remember the immense contribution of veterans in making our Army, what it is today,” he said.

Greens in Kodagu bat for Kasturirangan report

Vested interests are creating confusion in the minds of people’

To preserve the greenery in Kodagu, there is a need to implement recommendations of Kasturirangan report on conservation of Western Ghats. If the recommendations are not implemented, then the environment will be at stake, said office bearers of Wildlife First.

Addressing a press meet here on Thursday, K M Chinnappa, A Thammu Poovaiah, T M Somaiah, P M Muthanna and M K Appacchu said that the report will not harm environment and its dwellers. However, a few vested interest, politicians and officials are engaged in creating rumours against the report. It has created fear in the minds of the people.

“Timber mafia, mining lobby and encroachers are engaged in misleading people. Thousands of trees have been felled to facilitate the work on high-tension wire in Virajpet. Will the environment in Kodagu intact if hydel power and railway line projects are implemented,” they asked.

“Those who have opposed the report have not read the report. It is better if people read the report on their own. If we initiate a discussion, then we are projected as pseudo environmentalists and anti-development.”

He lamented at the untoward incident reported during state-level committee’s visit to collect opinion on the recommendations in Madikeri.

The office-bearers said as per the recommendations, only 37 per cent of the Western Ghats have been identified as Specially Economic Areas. There is no problem in taking up development work in the remaining 63 per cent of the area. “ESAs are those areas considered sensitive, less populated, National Park, Reserve forest, project tiger and elephant corridor areas. Only 55 villages in the district have been identified as SEAs and not the entire district,” they said. “There is no proposal to acquire agricultural and coffee estates. There is no restriction on the felling of trees on private land. The land owners can seek permission and fell trees in Kodagu as per the Karnataka Forests Act 1963 and Karnataka Preservation of Trees Act 1976. There is no proposal to check felling of silver, acacia trees grown by the land owners.

They said “the recommendations have not laid down any restrictions on the cultivation of coffee, black pepper, paddy and oranges in Kodagu. It has not laid down restrictions on the construction of houses as well. Commercial activities like coffee, tea processing units, home stays, commercial complex, cement unit, furniture units and tiles manufacturing units are listed in green zones and no restrictions have been laid down on it.”

The recommendation has banned quarry, sand mining, setting up of thermal power projects and construction of more than 20000 square metre building in the identified areas, they added.

CG Open Golf 2014: Chikkarangappa triumphs

S. Chikkarangappa defended his title in style at the CG Open Golf 2014, producing a final round of four-under-66 at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club course on Saturday. The Bengaluru golfer totalled 17-under-263 in the PGTI Super Series event and also topped the Rolex Rankings.

Om Prakash Chouhan bettered the course record with 10-under-60 in the fourth round, and was rewarded with the second spot carding 16-under-264.

Overnight leader C. Muniyappa of Bengaluru returned a card of 15-under-265 for third place.

Chikkarangappa (67-66-64-66) started with pars on the first three holes, birdied the fourth, fifth and seventh.

Muniyappa bogeyed the 11th, as the former struck form to manage birdies on 16th and 18th for the title.

Amardip Malik breaks victory barrier with playoff triumph at PGTI Noida Masters

Amardip Sinh Malik of Greater Noida clinched his maiden title at the Rs. 40 lakh PGTI Noida Masters after a playoff win against Md Zamal Hossain Mollah of Bangladesh at the Noida Golf Course. Chikkarangappa S of Bangalore won the Super Series title to earn a bonus prize of Rs. 30 lakh after ending top of the table at the seventh and final Super Series event of 2014.

Amardip Sinh Malik (70-67-70-78) and Md Zamal Hossain Mollah (72-69-73-71) ended the regulation 72 holes with matching totals of three-under-285 and thus proceeded for the playoff on the 18th hole. Malik sealed it with a par on the first playoff hole even as Zamal dropped a bogey. While Malik was two on the green and two-putted for par, Zamal found the green in four shots after landing it in the bunker.

The 29-year-old Amardip Sinh Malik, the overnight leader by four shots, seemed to be losing grip of the match as he made four bogeys and a double-bogey on the first 14 holes to be six-over for the day. He then made two birdies and two bogeys on the last four holes to end the day with a six-over-78. Malik was a picture of grit and determination in the playoff as he wrapped it up with a five-feet par putt.

Amardip, who climbed from 49th place to 23rd place in the Rolex Rankings after his win on Friday, said, “I’m delighted to post my first win. I’ve come close to winning on quite a few occasions in the past. But it was great to finally cross the line. I had a forgettable fourth round as I missed a lot of short putts and found myself in tough situations. However, I hung in there with two birdies towards the end. My perseverance paid off in the playoff. This win has boosted my confidence for the last two events of the season.”

Md Zamal Hossain Mollah mixed three birdies with two bogeys in his final round of one-under-71 before losing out in the playoff.

Noida’s Vikrant Chopra shot a final round of even-par-72 to finish third at two-under-286.

Chikkarangappa became the Super Series champion after finishing tied fourth at one-under-287. He fired a 71 in the final round on Friday. Chikka, a winner of two Super Series events in 2014, ended on top of the Super Series Points Table with a total of 3837.61 to earn the bonus prize of Rs. 30 lakh. The 21-year-old also continues to lead the Rolex Rankings with earnings of Rs. 36,89,711.

Kapil Kumar of Delhi and Mukesh Kumar of Mhow shared fourth place with Chikkarangappa.

Delhi’s Rashid Khan, who finished tied 12th at Noida at three-over-291, claimed second place with 3394 points.

Amardip Sinh Malik finished third in the Super Series with 2252.19 points.

Stars bask in awards glory

Governor Vajubhai Vala congratulated the top athletes and coaches of Karnataka including Asiad gold medalists Ashwini Akkunji (athletics) and Sushmitha Pawar (kabaddi) on Wednesday for winning the Karnataka Olympic Association (KOA) awards 2014 and said more laurels could be won through the combined efforts of state government and KOA.

Addressing the gathering in Raj Bhavan, Vala said the state can be proud of its achievements in sports. “I’m happy to note that there are seven players in the Indian hockey team from Karnataka. Likewise, there are many others from the state who have done well at the international level,” the governor said after giving away KOA’s special awards to hockey players SV Sunil, Nikkin Thimmaiah, VR Raghunath, discus thrower Vikas Gowda, badminton player Ashwini Ponnappa, pistol shooter PN Prakash and other medal winners at the Incheon Asian Games.

The governor also recalled the Gujarat model of sports development which is now rated highly. “There is competition at the village, district and zonal level before they reach the state level and winners at all these levels are rewarded,” said Vala, who also served as the finance minister of Gujarat.

He also exhorted all youngsters to take up sports. “Today we see the absence of good character in many youngsters and that’s why sport is important as it helps in character building,” he said.

Chief minister Siddaramaiah stayed clear of committing anything more on the sports cess, despite being prodded by KOA president Govindaraj, but reaffirmed the government’s commitment to support sportspersons. “I’ve never said no whenever the sportspersons have come to me for help. We are improving the infrastructure in all the districts and that will help athletes from rural areas,” he said.

Ace badminton doubles player Ashwini Ponnappa was happy to receive the award in what was a big year for her. “It was a satisfying year as we have improved a lot winning medals in ABC, Uber Cup and Commonwealth Games. It is going to be another busy season from January with the World Championship in August,” Ashwini said.

Middle distance runner Ashwini was all smiles after collecting two awards. The lanky athlete said the awards are a big motivation to improve further. “This was a big surprise I was never expecting it,” she said.

The KOA also honoured several coaches including N Lingappa (athletics), DY Biradar (athletics), Manoharan G (boxing), Aslam Khan (football), Jude Felix (hockey) and Vasant Madhav (tennis). TOI’s principal photographer Syed Asif also received the honour.

Earlier, Govindaraj said the government has cleared the proposal for the construction of the Olympic Bhawan at the Sree Kanteerava stadium. “Karnataka will only be the second state after Andhra Pradesh to have their Olympic Bhawan,” he said.

Kodagu gets award for tourism

Kodagu has bagged the title of “Favourite Emerging Destination” in India at the Readers’ Travel Awards event in New Delhi on Tuesday

The award was presented to G Sathyavathi, Director, Department of Tourism, Karnataka by Divia Thani, Editor of Conde Nast Traveller magazine, Lalit K Pawar, Secretary, India Tourism and Nicholas Coleridge, President, Conde Nast International.

Kodagu has been the most popular hill station in south India for many years, said Minister for Tourism R V Deshpande. “Locals have made the experience more interesting by offering excellent cultural, culinary and nature-engaging experiences that attract tourists again and again,” he added.

Madikeri: Girls Top District-level Debate Competition Held at Ponnampet

A district-level debate competition was conducted by Sri Sai Shankar School, Ponnampet for PU and degree students on the topic ‘Harassment of girls in educational institutions’.

The first prize was won by Pragathi of 2nd PUC, St Joseph’s PU College, Madikeri while the second prize was won by K C Thanvi Thangamma of 1st PUC, Vidyaniketan PU College, Gonikoppa, Kodagu.

Thanvi Thangamma is the daughter of Kallichanda Suresh Chengappa and Kavitha Kaveramma Kallichanda, residents of Balele in south Kodagu.
