The latest edition of the Kodava Hockey Festival, scheduled to begin at Virajpet on April 20, is vying to enter the Guiness Book of World Records, according to its organisers.
The competition, a hugely popular event among Kodava families since 1997, is aiming to field 325 families in the tournament this year – thus breaking the record for the largest field hockey tournament in the world, irrespective of age and gender. Each team is eligible to enter 16 family members into the event and it is scheduled to end on May 19. The event this year wil be organised by the Thathanda family.
At a press conference here to announce the 2014 edition of the festival of hockey, the head of the Thathanda Family, Nanaiah, spoke with gusto about the tradition and the deep seated roots that hockey has with the country. He pointed out that the current Indian men’s national team has a good number of players from Kodagu.
The winners of the tournament will take home Rs 1 lakh, while the runners-up will receive Rs 50,000.
There was also an official pre-launch exhibition match between two teams representing various Kodava families at the KSHA Stadium on Saturday night.

Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi on Saturday won their first ATP title after re-union as they beat Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic in the doubles final of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
The second seeded ‘Indo-Pak Express’ duo beat their top seeded opponents Nestor of Canada and Zimonjic (Serbia) 6-4, 6-3 in the summit clash that lasted one hour and eight minutes.
Today’s win was a sort of a revenge for Bopanna and Qureshi who lost to the same opponents in the final of the Sydney International in January.This was the five title overall for Bopanna and Qureshi together and first after they re-united at the beginning of the season. They played with different partners for two seasons.

No one made much of it when a pigeon was found dead recently in Kakkabbe village near Madikeri. But it was no ordinary bird: there was a ring on its claw which aroused the interest of KM Chinnappa, environmentalist and director of Wildlife First Trust. It bore the inscription ‘SRPC 1110 Selam-7’.
Chinnappa immediately got around to tracing the bird’s origins. Turns out, the pigeon was a visitor from the Philippines and belonged to the Santolan Racing Pigeon Club there. It was a racing pigeon and was capable of flying continuously for 1,000 miles, as per records about such birds in America.
“It’s a wonder the pigeon flew 4,500km from the Philippines to Kodagu,” says Chinnappa.
Pigeons have a special ability to return to their place of origin even after flying for days on end. But it’s possible the pigeon from the Philippines got confused and lost its bearings due to interference from cell phone towers, claims Chinnappa.
Sometimes, pigeons also fly off track while trying to escape eagles, he adds.
The ring found on the pigeon was sent for analysis to the Bombay Natural History Society through bird expert Kripakara of Mysore.

Saketh Myneni and Rohan Bopanna celebrate their victory | PTI
“Where’s the party tonight Saketh?” yelled Zeeshan Ali from across the room, leaving everyone in splits. Such was the occasion that it made even the ever-composed India coach shed his inhibitions and be vocal about his emotions.
A tub of ice was emptied on Saketh Myneni’s head, sending shivers down his spine, quite literally. The youngster had just smashed a winner and stood rooted to the ground as the crowd erupted in joy while the tricolour was unfurled and waved relentlessly at the ITC Tennis Stadium. Myneni and veteran Rohan Bopanna had just won their doubles rubber and sealed India’s 3-0 victory over the Chinese Taipei in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group I tie on Saturday.
The audience were treated to a victory lap with the players carrying non-playing captain Anand Amritraj on their shoulders. Pomp and patriotic fervour marked the celebrations as the hosts set up a second round clash with Korea Republic, vying for a place in the World Group play-offs.
It was a dream debut for the 26-year-old Myneni as the hosts completed the formalities in just two days, making the reverse singles matches on Sunday inconsequential. “When I hit the shot, it took a while for the victory to sink in and then I was like ‘Oh we just won’,” said Myneni. “Rohan asked me to be aggressive and I did just that.”
With Lee Hsin-Han injured, their No 1 player in the squad Tsung-Hua Yang partnered Hsien-Yin Peng for the doubles match. After being served a bagel in the first set, the duo fought back to win the second through tie-breaker. But they had no answer to Bopanna’s serve as he dished out 18 aces and dominated the net play to take India home with a 6-0, 6-7(3/7), 6-3, 7-6(7/2) win.
The Bangalorean was all praise for his partner, who left no stone unturned to provide as much support as possible. “Saketh plays fantastic doubles, I have played against him before. All I had to do was keep him motivated. We combined really well and it is easy to play with someone who serves 25-30kms faster than me. So all credit to him,” said Bopanna. “He has all the tools to be a top level player. And if he continues this way, there’s no stopping him whatsoever,” he added.
In the absence of seasoned players like Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, the duo’s performance comes as a breath of fresh air and could churn out more such wins for India in the future. It’s just one match down but this pair have certainly made the job of the selectors a tad easier.
Earlier in the day, marathon man Somdev Devvarman looked rejuvenated as he took to court to complete his five-setter against Ti Chen. And the Indian took just eight minutes to give India a 2-0 lead, not letting the previous day’s anxious moments haunt him. He set aside his defensive mindset and attacked from the word go to win 6-7(4/7), 7-6 (7/3), 1-6, 6-2, 9-7.
“A player cannot pull off a marathon five-setter on his own and it takes contribution from the entire team to eke out such a win,” Somdev said. “I am so relieved that I won. This morning, Yuki sent a message with a picture saying ‘keep calm boys’. They all kept me incredibly calm,” he added. Coach Zeeshan said the team functioned as a unit and it was their bonding that saw them through. “It’s been years since we saw all players assemble on the same day ahead of the Davis Cup. All of us were here on Sunday and ever since there hasn’t been a single meal we haven’t had together,” Zeeshan said.

Allanasons Ltd has won the best green coffee exporter award instituted by the Coffee Board. The company bagged the award for exporting the highest volume of coffee in 2012-13.
NKG Jayanti Coffee was second, followed by Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company Ltd. At the IICF, Coffee Board honoured individuals and institutions for setting high standards and benchmarks in the world of coffee.
The following are the other category winners: In the speciality coffee segment – Aspinwall & Company topped the list, followed by Allanasons Ltd and NKG Jayanti Coffee.
Instant coffee category: CCL Products, followed by Tata Coffee and Nestle India. Roasted coffee beans and ground coffee: Jay Keshav Exports, Rams Exim and Fresh and Honest Cafe.
NKG Jayanti Coffee won the award for the best exporter to Europe. The company bagged the award for exporting the maximum amount of coffee to Europe in 2012-13. Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company Ltd and Allanasons Ltd came second and third.

Former international shuttle badminton player Pullera G. Chengappa (67), a resident of Mysore, passed away in Bangalore this morning after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife Vanitha and a son.
Last rites will be held at his native village Kedakal in Suntikoppa, Kodagu, later this evening, according to family sources.

It was their first international exposure, for the three differently-abled persons from Kodagu, but they brought laurels to the country at the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games held at New Castle, Australia, last month in which 29 countries participated.
M.P. Mandanna, a 27-year-old, won gold medal in 100 mt, bronze in 200 mt and silver in 4 X 400 mt relay, while 16-year-old C.R. Gowtham won silver in singles and bronze in doubles in Bocce. H.M. Arun, a 20 year-old, was placed 4th in singles and 6th in doubles in Bocce.
The trio from Swastha, a rehabilitation centre for differently abled children located in Suntikoppa in Kodagu district, were part of the Indian contingent of 381 athletes that returned with a rich haul of 387 medals, including 111 gold medals and 136 silver medals.
In all, 20 athletes and nine coaches through Special Olympics Bharat Karnataka represented the State, bagging nine gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals.
“It was a nice experience and a great pleasure to participate in the games,” Mr. Mandanna told presspersons here on Friday.
“I want to improve on my performance,” he added. Mr. Arun and Mr. Gowtham too concurred with Mr. Mandanna on their experience.
According to Biju Thayathvalapil, a special educator at Swastha, Asia Pacific games was the first international exposure for the three, who had earlier participated in the national games.
They have already started training for the World Special Olympics scheduled to be held in Los Angeles, US in 2015, Mr. Biju said.

Govt. urged to expedite construction of War Memorial in city

Kodava Samaja, Mysore, had organised a function to celebrate the 115th Birth Anniversary of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa at the Circle named after him here this morning.
Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) C.K. Karumbaya, SM, paid glowing tributes to the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army and urged the Government of Karnataka to expedite the construction of the War Memorial near the DC office in city. Capt. Sharma urged to include the life story of the Field Marshal in the school curriculum.
Earlier, the gathering offered floral tributes to the portrait of the Field Marshal.
Samaja President M.M. Karumbaiah welcomed. Samaja Hon. Secretary K.M. Belliappa, former Presidents of the Samaja Dr. A.A. Kuttappa, K.A. Kariappa and P.S. Ganapathy, Chairman of Cauvery Educational Institutions Prof. K.C. Belliappa, Sri Kaveri Kodagu Mahila Sangha Hon. Secretary P. Lovely Appaiah, Kavya Kuttappa, office-bearers and members of the Samaja and also of the Kodava Samaja Cultural and Sports Club were present at the programme along with some public. On the occasion, sweets were distributed.
It may be recalled, VeKare Ex-Servicemen Trust, Mysore, headed by M.N. Subramani as its President, was the first Ex-Servicemen NGO to propose a War Memorial in city way back in the year 2000 and the same was accepted by the district administration which earmarked a plot in front of ncc Gp hqs behind dc office. The NGO, which pursued the matter till 2007, had also suggested installing a statue of the Field Marshal at the Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa Circle.

An eye-catching flower show has been organised from Jan. 26 to Jan. 28 from 10 am to 5 pm at the Yousuf Ali Khan memorial flower garden at the premises of Balyatri Coffee Estate near Boikeri on Madikeri-Suntikoppa Road in Kodagu.
The estate belongs to former Rajya Sabha member F.M. Khan. Briefing the press on the annual flower show, Khan said that “over 90 varieties of flowers and fruits have been grown in the garden which is the only private flower garden in the country. The garden took shape about 50 years ago and for the last 15 years the flower show is being organised annually for the public. The garden houses Philia, Lorsper, Khel, kelen chus, cactus, dahlia, daisy, roses, pinks, kupia and other exotic varieties including bonsais.
He said that horticulture was bifurcated from agriculture when Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister to boost the growth of horticulture which has not happened to the desired level yet. Continuing, he opined that Congress needed young leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka.
However he felt that Rahul should address more public rallies instead of closed-door meetings to reach the masses.
