India’s Rohan Bopanna and France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin have beaten Britain’s Jamie Murray and Australia’s John Peers 7-6, 6-4 in the final of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo to claim the doubles trophy.
The first set took 44 minutes while the second took 34 minutes to complete in a match that went on for 1 hour and 18 minutes.
There were no breaks of serve in the first set while a single break in the second set ensured that the Indo-French pair comfortably won the title.
Bopanna and Roger Vasselin were the fourth seeds in the tournament.

Bangalore is set to host the fifth edition of India International Coffee Festival (IICF 2014), the flagship event of the coffee sector, from January 21-25, 2014. The Coffee Board of India is organising the event, which will showcase India as an emerging global coffee destination.
The previous edition of IICF was held in Delhi in 2012.
“The IICF 2014 will be all about in depth discussion on the latest in coffee market and retailing in India, on the cutting edge developments in coffee technology relevant to the Indian scenario with papers and demonstrations by world renowned experts,” Coffee Board said.
The event comprises conference and exhibition on the coffee sector. The conference aims to capture the changes taking place in the coffee sector and will discuss current trends related to production as well as take a close look at the prevailing market scenario. It will focus on issues such as changing role of Arabica and Robusta, health aspects of coffee, innovative and alternate channels of coffee delivery to consumer among others.
It will also lay stress on the changing patterns of coffee production including farm mechanisation, discuss parameters of good coffee and take a close look at sustainable production methods including prudent water management, the Board said.
The Expo of IICF will showcase latest technologies, new products and services and new coffees and blends.
There will be workshops on processing, brewing, roasting, espresso making, cooking with coffee, art on silk and coffee entrepreneurship.

Jawaid Akhtar, the Chairman of Coffee Board of India, was elected as the Chairperson of the International Coffee Council at the meetings of the International Coffee Organization which took place on 9 September 2013 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The 111th session of the Council and the meetings took place from 9 September 2013- 12 September 2013.
At the same time, Conradin Rasi of Switzerland was elected as the Vice-Chairperson of the International Coffee Council. The Council also appointed Juan Esteban Orduz of Colombia as the Chairperson of the Consultative Forum.
About the International Coffee Organization (ICO)
• The International Coffee Organization was established in 1963 in London.
• It was initiated with the United Nations (UN) to increase cooperation among the nations which produce, distribute and consume coffee.
• The International Coffee Organization was formed as a result of the five-year International Coffee Agreement signed in 1962 at the UN in New York.
• Till the year 2011, it comprised of 39 members, which included 33 exporting nations, 5 importing countries and one importing community, i.e., the European Union.
• The highest body of the ICO is International Coffee Council. It meets two times a year and the Private Sector Consultative Board of ICO includes 16 representatives from coffee production and consumption industries.
• The members of ICO represent 97 percent of the world coffee production and more than 80 percent of the world consumption.

Team Coorg edged out United Thalassery Sports Club (UTSC), Dubai 2-1 to claim the honours of the commemorative hockey match to celebrate the 67th Indian Independence Day at the OFA ground in Qurum.
Chief guest J.S. Mukul, the Indian ambassador, conveyed his appreciation to the organisers for promoting the Indian national game and also praised S.A.S Naqvi for his dedicated efforts to ensure the development of the sport in Oman.
Played under the backdrop of the ongoing Asia Cup in Ipoh, Team Coorg opened the scoring in the first half by Shakeel with UTSC levelling the score in the next minute with a field goal.
The second half was all about ball possession, with each team trying to gain the upper hand. With a better passing game, Team Coorg gained the advantage with combined effort from Kavan, who slotted the ball home.
In spite of UTSCs constant foray into Team Coorg’s half, the defenders stood their ground to deny UTSC an equaliser and went on to win the game 2-1.
During the half time an entertaining match between Ambassador XI, skippered by APS Chauhan and Veterans XI, captained by Mohammed Shambeh Al Raisi, was played which had players of all age group participating.
The spectators wished the exciting match went on for few more minutes. The exhibition match was won by Veterans XI 2-1.
Kuttappa of Team Coorg in appreciation of the excellent support received from the Indian Embassy presented a memento to the Ambassador.
A lifetime achievement award was also presented to Dawood Ahmed Ali Al Raisi, former president of Oman Hockey Association.
During the ceremony, Mohammed Shambeh presented a special award for the outstanding contribution to Raqib Qureshi, who has played for Pakistan during 1964-1966 and for Bangladesh between 1978-1982. He keeps in touch with hockey every weekend at the OHA grounds and is a source of inspiration to young and old.
The presence of Nalini Bopaiah and Ponnamma Thammaiah added grace to the occasion and they gave away mementoes to the corporate sponsors Naranjee Hirjee Co, Khimji Ramdas’ Permoglaze, Al Rawahi International, Al Omaniya, Services and Trade Company.
Former Oman goalkeeper Jabbar was specially mentioned as he and Raqib Qureshi donned the role of umpires.
SAS Naqvi too presented mementos to the Ambassador and Dawood Al Raisi, while the organisers did not forget the live wire commentary rendered by Salih Thacher.

Team Coorg and Friends of Naqvi Group will organise the 6th edition of the Indian Independence Day Cup Hockey match on August 30 at the Oman Football Association ground, near Near Hotel Mumtaz Mahal, in Al Qurum.
The match, which will see Team Coorg taking on Dubai’s United Thalassery Sports Club, is scheduled to start at 5.00 pm.
Over the years Team Coorg have been organising hockey events in the Sultanate to celebrate various historic Indian National occasions. Hockey is one of most popular game which has a huge fan following back in Coorg, a tiny district in th south Indian state of Karnataka, where the annual family hockey festival witnesses an average of 250 teams participating.
The district boasts now the presence of five of their players in the current Indian national team like Nithin Thimmaiah, Nikkin Thimmaiah, S.K. Uthappa, Ragunath and S.V. Sunil, some of whom either visited the Sultanate or played for the Omani clubs in the past.
Indian Ambassador J.S. Mukul will preside over the match while Dawood bin Ahamed Ali Al Raisi, the former chairman of the Oman Hockey Association, will be the guest of honour. The latter will also be honored for his lifetime achievement on this occasion.
In bringing the game to the masses, business houses have begun to come forward in sponsoring the event and teams. Khimji Ramdas LLC’s Permoglaze Paints are the sponsors of the team colour. Naranjee Hirjee & Co., Muscat Pharmacy (Pocari) and Al Omaniya Finance are the other prominent sponsors of the event.
According to Team Coorg official Kuttappa, the event has been receiving support from the Indian Embassy and the Oman Hockey Association. He made a special mention about the invaluable and continued guidance being provided by veteran hockey personality SAS Naqvi, Team Coorg, UTSC and hockey enthusiast Mohammed Osama Rawat.

The Nicaragua Tourist Board has launched the Coffee Trail, a new tourist route that will give visitors an authentic experience of the northern region of the country.
The Coffee Trail covers five regional departments – Estelí, Jinotega, Madriz, Matagalpa, and Nueva Segovia – and aims to show visitors the diverse culture, food, scenery and tourism products of this area.
Visitors following the route will travel through several coffee and tobacco plantations and stay in charming rural hotels or guest farmhouses where they can take part in everyday activities. They can hike through nature reserves, visit picturesque villages and towns, and see how the locals produce beautiful handicrafts made of marble, clay or tusa (corn skin). The local gastronomy is another main attraction, including several corn-based dishes.
In Matagalpa, travellers can find out more about the history of tobacco and coffee production in the area at the National Coffee Museum. The department of Jinotega is the country’s main producer of coffee, renowned for its quality. In Estelí, visitors can choose amongst several natural parks – Cerro Tisey-La Estanzuela, Miraflores-Moropolente, Canta-Gallo, and La Patasta – to enjoy beautiful scenery. Madriz is famous for its ‘rosquillas’, or typical doughnuts, perfect to accompany a good cup of coffee. Nueva Segovia is known for its colonial and revolutionary history, and the typical handicrafts made by the local indigenous community.
The Coffee Trail offers visitors a combination of indigenous traditions, history, lush natural landscapes and a rich biodiversity, together with the warmest welcome from the locals, to provide an authentic experience of Northern Nicaragua.
The guests from Nigeria have arrived in Kodagu. Its now their season to enjoy the mother nature, who are found aplenty in plantations, paddy fields and wherever you can see. It does not mean they are newcomers to Kodagu. They arrive here as guests on every monsoon since the past several decades.They will arrive in the future too. Now, you will wonder who these Nigerian guests are. If you want to see them, they are aplenty at Moornadu, Napoklu and Virajpet who fly in flocks between huge trees; they are none other than migratory birds from Nigeria or the locals call them as Bellakki, because they are white like snow.
If you go to see, its customary for the migratory birds to arrive in hilly range of Kodagu at the onset of monsoon, who take refuge from heavy gales and torrential rains. However, there have been a little changes in the recent past. It doesn’t rain like before here owing to which a few bird remain here. Moreover, no sooner monsoon sets in, these Nigerian migratory birds flock here and make nests in huge trees and busy themselves in procreation.
These birds that arrive in Kodagu take shelter in Napoklu, Moornadu and Virajpet. They are merrily made their nest in huge trees in towns and are least concerned of human activities on earth. These birds fly across blue sky, make nest and busy in laying eggs, a scenic sight indeed. If you view these migratory birds high on huge trees, it reminds of falcons of Mandya.
A few migratory birds were cited in the huge trees located at Napoklu.They returned to their bases after hatching and returned with newborn chicks.The number of migratory birds increased since then as the food was found aplenty and none troubled them. The flocks increased over the years and began settling in huge trees not only in Napoklu, but also in Hakattoor, that lies on Moornadu – Madikeri road. These birds shifted to localities of Moornadu, Napoklu and Virajpet as huge trees were felled in Hakattoor.
These migratory birds arrive in flocks during May – June at the onset of monsoon and settle in the huge trees of Napoklu, Moornadu, Virajpet (nearby KSRTC bus stand) in town.
These birds busy themselves in building nest from dry leaves and small bits of wild vegetation that they source from nearby coffee and cardamom estates. The female bird remains in the nest, lays eggs and hatches them, while the male bird brings food for them from fields nearby. The female bird feeds the newborn that shot is a cherished shot for any cameraman.
The birds get aplenty food such as worms, insects etc when the farmer tills the paddy field. The newborn learn to fly and collectively fly all over without bothering to the people and chaos in the city. These birds make their return journey along with the confident chicks to their homelands. They will only return during next monsoon. The city-folks do not bother these migratory birds in procreation that makes them to come back in next season.

Indian coffee estates are moving slowly to gain US’ roasters interest.
As a first step, the Sethuraman Estates located at Magundi in Chikmagalur after showcasing its produce at various speciality coffee events in the US has now become the first Indian coffee estate to get ‘R Grade’ certificate.
‘R Grade’ certificate are given for washed robusta coffees by the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) which is an arm of Speciality Coffee Association of America (SCAA).

The SCAA recently tested Sethuraman Estate’s robusta coffee submission at the CQI and found to have all the required quality parameters. This certificate facilitates the estate to sell and charge a high premium in the US .
The certificate and recognition allows Sethuraman Estates to sell its entire submission of 15 tonnes speciality robusta in the US market spread over a year by using the CQI and SCAA logo.
“The ‘single-origin estate-branded’ coffee of Sethuram Estates has so far fetched a premium of over 30 per cent over the domestic market prices. Currently the domestic washed robusta coffees is trading at Rs 145 a kg,” said Nishant R. Gurjer, Managing Partner, Sethuraman Estates.

“This certificate and recognition will allow us to enter the lucrative US café market as well,” he added.
The Sethuraman estate located at Chikmagalur began in operations in the 1950s. In the US market, the company is marketing estate-branded coffees – the Sitara Parchment Robusta and the Ne Plus Ultra of Robusta coffee brands.
The US, a traditionally arabica-consuming country, is slowly replacing it with robusta coffees and few companies have initiated moves to source from various countries for create blends.

This has led to the Coffee Quality Institute, which used to certify only Arabica coffees, now has introduced separate certification for robusta coffees.

According to the institute’s finding of Sethuraman Estates, the following are the rating with baseline score of 7.14. Aroma 7.58 , flavour 7.42, aftertaste 7.42, acidity 7.83, mouth feel 7.42, balance 7.50, Uniformity 10, clean cup 10 Sweetness 7.42 cupper points 7.58.
Gurjer said, “We entered the US market in 2006 by exporting just two containers (36 tonnes) and so far have reached the level of 8 containers (144 tonnes) of speciality robusta coffees.”

The 51-strong international board of advisors will meet during this week’s International Music Summit in the global ‘party’ capital of Ibiza to discuss a range of issues covering marketing, health, safety and piracy. It brings together representatives from across the industry covering 15 countries, with an eventual aim of creating a “worldwide voice for electronic dance music”. Representing India is of course our ‘EDM poster boy’ Nikhil Chinapa.
Nice idea but we’re not quite sure what this will actually achieve other than being a glorified networking holiday, but who’s going to say no to a free holiday in the sun.
Star Indian shuttlers lit up the hall as they walked the ramp in a gala opening ceremony here on the eve of the India Open.
Displaying designer clothes, Parupalli Kashyap, Jwala Gutta, Ashwini Ponnappa, P.V. Sindhu, Pullela Gopichand and Saina Nehwal took to the ramp Monday night as the entire Indian badminton contingent cheered them on. Olympian Kashyap got the loudest cheer from his fellow players.
Shuttlers who played in the London Olympics were felicitated and presented with prize money as had been promised by the Badminton Association of India (BAI).
Saina got Rs.25 lakh for winning the bronze medal in London last year. Women’s doubles specialists Jwala and Ashwini got Rs.2.5 lakh while Jwala’s mixed doubles partner V. Diju was awarded Rs.1 lakh.
