Brahma Kumari (BK) Meenakshiji, a senior Rajyogini of Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya, who was popularly called as Meenakshi Akka, passed away on July 11 morning at a private hospital in Mangaluru.
A native of Chikkamandur in Ponnampet taluk of Kodagu district, Meenakshiji was the eldest daughter of Kallichanda K. Machaiah and Parvathi couple and is survived by four brothers
The body was kept at the Gonikoppal Branch of Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya yesterday morning for the public to pay their last respects and the mortal remains were shifted to Chikkamandur, where the last rites were performed.

Indian Badminton Doubles Players, Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto have achieved their career-best rankings in BWF Rankings. In the recent update by the BWF, the duo successfully climbed up one place to reach 60th rank. This is the highest they have achieved in their entire career.
The pair recently won the Nantes International Challenge title by defeating the prolific duo of Hung En-Tzu and Lin Yu-Pei of Chinese Taipei. The event took place at the Salle Metropolitana de la Trocardaiare, Paris. Ashwini is a Commonwealth gold medallist and a world-class player with many titles under her belt.
Meanwhile, Tanisha has astoundingly proven herself. She paved her way through the domestic circuit and has shown his talent alongside experienced players. Both of them have performed exceptionally well in the recent past and are willing to stick with the winning ways.
Ashwini attained the highest-ever ranking of 10 in women’s double alongside Jwala Gutta in 2015. While Tanisha had the highest rank of 115 with Shruti Mishra. This duo has come a long way to achieve this feat in the BWF Rankings update. They display the depth in the Indian Badminton pool and the nurturing of this depth.
Other Indian Players to Gain in Recent BWF Rankings
Apart from these two, Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker moved up to 64th rank. Swetaparna Panda and Rutaparna Panda advanced to 66, while the Palak-Unnati pair moved to the 90th position. All of these Ranks were achieved in the Women’s Doubles category.
In the Men’s Single category, Kiran George moved up three places to achieve the 53rd position. While in the Men’s Doubles category, P.S.Ravikrishna and S.Sankar climbed up four places to grab the 70th ranking. The pair of Achutaditya-Venkata Harsha also made meager progress by moving to 80th place in the rankings.
These are some major updates from the BWF Rankings update in July 2023 and the players would be motivated to further progress in the same manner.

It was an open secret in filmi circles that actors Harshika Poonacha and Bhuvann Ponnanna were more than just friends. In fact, Harshika often introduced Bhuvann as her cousin at public events that they went to together. Since the duo were not willing to openly address their relationship status, it was left unspoken, even though there were tell-tale signs all the way, whether it was their carefully chosen solo pictures from holidays to the same destination at the same time, or their charity work during the pandemic, among others. Bhuvann and Harshika were together pretty much all the time. And now, they’ve finally decided to ‘come clean’ and declare that they are ready to take their relationship to the next level.

Harshika and Bhuvann are set to get married on August 24 back home in Kodagu in a traditional Kodava ceremony. The wedding is expected to be an intimate affair with only close family and friends in attendance, with a reception for their friends from the film industry and Bengaluru’s social circle, where both are quite active, to be held in the city later.
Harshika, who got into showbiz at a young age, way back in 2008, has, over the years, been an integral part of Kannada cinema, and in the last few years, she’d made a mark in the Bhojpuri industry as well. The actress had won a Karnataka State Award for Best Supporting actress in 2010 for her role in the film Thamassu, which had Shivarajkumar in the lead. Bhuvann, who is also an actor, became a household name during his stint on the reality show Bigg Boss Kannada. Bhuvann was a contestant in the fourth season and was later involved in a brawl with eventual winner Pratham, with the latter allegedly biting the former.

The prohibition on women scaling Bramhagiri Hills in Talacauvery stating that women affected the sanctity of the pilgrim centre had stirred strong opposition from the Kodava community. Uniting against the stand of the astrologer Narayana Puduval, the ‘Kodava Freethinkers…’, a closed group on Facebook, strongly voiced its opposition and took the issue to the Kodagu deputy commissioner, who reportedly told them that the temple cannot take unilateral decisions outside the purview of its prescribed duties.
Responding to the issue, Talacauvery temple committee President BS Thammaiah said: “We have heard the various suggestions predicted by the astrologer. However, the final decision is pending and the committee has not come to any conclusion. The astrologer has suggested various principles to be followed while mounting Bramhagiri Hills, which is a sacrosanct place of Seer Agasthya. The astrologer has suggested righteous methods to be followed while taking a dip at Talacauvery. The ritual questioning will continue in June and the final decision will be taken in the presence of temple Tantri, the committee and other officials.”
While the decision is still pending, the Kodava community is alert and voicing its dissent against patriarchal chauvinism. Kusum Nehru Mallangada, founder of Komfort Foundation and Nelakki Bolchaa, said: “We are planning to talk to former MP Prema Cariappa, so that it becomes easier for us to talk to anyone in the government or district administration. If nothing works, all the women of Kodagu need to stage an agitation to force our agenda. If the male chauvinism of the temple wins, we will bring up this issue in the Legislative Assembly and submit a memorandum to the government.”
Nevertheless, the temple committee maintains that no decision has been taken to ban women from mounting the Bramhagiri and the final stand will be taken only after the completion of the ritual of octagonal questioning.

Why We Think Kaveri Is A Culinary Custodian While researching her first book The Vanishing Kodavas, Kaveri spent a significant amount of time in the villages of Kodagu (Coorg), connected with the local people, and got a first-hand experience of their lifestyle, which is still connected with the land. The Vanishing Kodavas is acclaimed as a cultural study of the Kodava people based on 15 years of fieldwork documenting their history, customs, worship and cultural practices. What We’ve Learned About Kodava Cuisine Through Kaveri – Kachampuli is a souring and thickening agent indispensable to Kodava cuisine. Every kitchen will have a bottle or three of this dark, tart vinegar – made for centuries from the ripe fruits of the Garcinia gummi gutta tree, indigenous to Kodagu – stored away. It is a signature flavour in all the classic Coorg dishes.
– Rice is central to Coorg cuisine and used in many forms. Tari is washed, dried and hand-pounded rice that breaks down roughly into three to four bits and is used to make all the Coorg puttus. Akki podi is finely-powdered rice, used to make rice rotis and batters for some fried sweets. –
Kartha masala, or black masala, is a signature spice blend made of slowly dry roasted, ground spices that lends a characteristic flavour to many classic recipes. The basic ingredients of cumin, mustard seeds, black peppercorns and fenugreek seeds are roasted slowly to a coffee-brown colour, powdered and used in curries. A few other spices might be used too, depending on the recipe.

Theetharamada Sinchal Kaveramma shattered the national record in the 400-metre hurdle and met the qualifying mark for the Asiad (Asian Games), during the 62nd Inter-State Athletics Championships in Odisha.
Notably, she broke the national record, crossing the finish line in a thrilling photo-finish with a time of 56.76 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 57.02 seconds. This remarkable achievement also stands as Sinchal’s personal best time. She clinched the silver medal in the 400-metre hurdles event and a bronze medal in mixed relay.
The recently concluded National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, held at the Kalinga Stadium at Bhubaneswar, Odisha, served as a selection trial for both the delayed Asian Games in Hangzhou, scheduled for September, and the upcoming World Championships in Hungary.
Numerous top-tier athletes travelled to Bhubaneswar with the aim of securing their spots in the Asian Games later this year. Sinchal is among the 65 athletes representing 27 disciplines who persevered through scorching heatwaves to meet the Asiad qualification standard.
Sinchal receives training from Bollanda Vikram Aiyappa and Pramila Aiyappa in Bengaluru. Speaking to Star of Mysore, she attributed her record-breaking performance to her coaches and family, expressing her full dedication to them.
Sinchal has already commenced her preparations for the main Asian Games, scheduled to take place from Sept. 15 in Bangkok.
Sinchal is the daughter of Theetharamada M. Ravi and Rashmi (Kuppanda), residents of Nalloor village near Ponnampet. Her grandparents are Theetharamada Mudappa and Chondamma of Nalloor, as well as Kuppanda C. Thimmaiah and Muthakki of Nalvathoklu.
Sinchal completed her primary education at Lions Primary School in Gonikoppa and attended high school at Alvas English Medium High School in Moodbidri. She pursued her pre-university course at Alvas PU College and is currently in her final year of B.Com studies at Bishop Cotton Women’s Christian College in Bengaluru.
