Home Minister inaugurates newly constructed police quarters in Suntikoppa

Home Minister G. Parameshwara inaugurated the newly constructed police residential quarters at Suntikoppa in Kodagu district on Sunday.

The 12 residential quarters for police constables have been built at a cost of ₹ 3.64 crore by the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSPH&IDC).

Speaking after inaugurating the housing facility, the Minister said that around 40,000 residential quarters have already been constructed for police personnel across the state, while another 60,000 houses are still required.

Pointing out that the salaries of constables, who serve at the lowest ranks in the police department, had been increased, Mr. Parameshwara said the Government is providing improved housing facilities after taking note of the fact that many police personnel live in cramped houses.

Accordingly, the KSPH & IDC will provide housing in a phased manner up to the year 2030, he said.

Earlier, buildings were constructed at a cost of about ₹ 18 lakh per unit, but now the cost has increased to around ₹ 33 lakh. The government’s aim is to ensure that police personnel lead a comfortable and dignified life, he added.

The Minister assured to look into the list of demands made by MLA Mantar Gowda and priority given to construction of housing facilities for police personnel, while necessary steps will also be taken to establish police stations as per the Government’s parameters.

He said various measures have been introduced to make the police department more people-friendly, urging police personnel to maintain friendly relations with the public while ensuring strict punishment for offenders.

He further noted that Karnataka Police ranks first in the country in terms of safety and security, and police personnel perform their duties day and night, in rain and heat, often without rest. Therefore, they should be respected, and no one should attempt to demoralise them.

The Home Minister said that out of the 593 assurances given by the Siddaramaiah-led government in 2023, more than half have already been fulfilled, and all promises would be implemented within the next two years.

He added that the government has spent ₹1.36 lakh crore on the five guarantee schemes, aiming to bring poorer sections into the mainstream through various welfare programmes.

He stated that the government is people-oriented and functioning as promised, and added that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would present a strong budget on March 6.

MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda, speaking on the occasion, requested the Minister to fill vacant police posts, construct additional police quarters, and provide for the establishment of two more police stations in Kodagu district in the upcoming budget.

He also suggested utilising available land in the district for setting up a police training center.

Among those present were Southern Range Inspector General of Police Boralinagaiah, Deputy Commissioner S. J. Somashekar, Zilla Panchayat CEO Anand Prakash Meena, and Superintendent of Police R. N. Bindumani.

Union budget brews bitter discontent among coffee growers in Karnataka

A Coffee planter said the budget is silent on crucial subsidies on fertilisers, essential plantation equipment and fundamental necessities, as well as on the facilitation of loans.

Chikkamagaluru :

Coffee planter and social activist Holadagadde Girish said it was condemnable that the Union Budget ignored the coffee industry as it lacked any proposal to rescue growers from problems they face.

In a statement on Monday, he said the industry has been fetching considerable foreign exchange to the nation’s coffers, besides playing a key role in environment conservation and providing jobs. “It is alarming to observe that the budget lacks any revival programmes for the beleaguered industry, which is held back by erratic weather patterns, infestations, labour shortages, fluctuating market conditions and threats from wildlife,” Girish said.

The planter pointed out that the budget is silent on crucial subsidies on fertilisers, essential plantation equipment and fundamental necessities, as well as on the facilitation of loans. This neglect has further exacerbated the industry’s plight, pushing it to the brink of despair, he said.

Promises made by Central ministers including HD Kumaraswamy, the chairman of the Coffee Board and other officials during the Central Coffee Research Institute (CCRI) centenary celebration at Balehonnur have proved to be mere rhetoric, Girish said.

The demands for the establishment of an ESI hospital, branding of coffee, promotion of the domestic coffee market and the creation of a Coffee Tech Park have been relegated to obscurity, Girish said.

Bengaluru :

The Coffee Board is leaving no stone unturned in tapping the domestic and international sector to make profits, and is looking to cross last fiscal’s export target and change market trends.

Coffee Board of India CEO and Secretary M Kurma Rao on Monday said coffee exports for the year 2024-25 stood at $1.8billion. Till February 1, 2026, exports for 2025-26 were at $1.72billion. “We are expecting to cross last year’s export figure. This will be achieved in the last few days, before end of March 2026,” he said.

Board data showed exports from January-December 2025 at $2billion. Coffee production for the year 2024-25 was 3.63 lakh tonnes. Of the total coffee produced, 70 per cent is exported and 30 per cent is for domestic consumption. A slow rise in domestic consumption is being noted. Data also showed Bengaluru gradually becoming the coffee capital of India and Asia.

Rao said all efforts are being made to increase export, production, productivity and coffee quality. Different strategies are being adopted, including water augmentation, special irrigation schemes and replacement and consolidation plantation. He was speaking to the media after announcing the second edition of the three-day India International Coffee Festival (IICF) from February 12 in Bengaluru.

Rao said Indian coffee is gaining recognition for its quality and diversity. The event will provide a platform to showcase the importance of Indian coffee and help build connections with producers, markets and encourage best practices.

“Our USP is two-tier shade grown coffee and crop diversification. We have ecologically sustainable models. Last December, two new Arabica coffee varieties were launched — Suraksha and Shatabdi. They are pest-resilient and high-yielding varieties. This brings the total to 18 Indian coffee varieties. We are also working on creating a unique coffee gene pool by getting species and varieties from across the globe. We are also working with Indian embassies and diaspora to increase our reach,” Rao said.

Indian coffee steadily moving from commodity-led to quality, experience-driven market: Coffee Board

The tariff reduction from 25% to zero would boost India’s coffee exports in general and shipments of speciality coffees in particular, said the coffee community, in response to a media query on the impact of recent U.S. tariff reduction on India’s coffee exports.

India’s coffee sector is steadily moving from a commodity-led approach to a quality and experience-driven market, said the coffee community here on Monday.

Addressing a media conference, Kurma Rao M., CEO and Secretary of the Coffee Board of India, said, “Indian coffee is gaining recognition for its quality and diversity.’’

Platforms such as the India International Coffee Festival (IICF) play an important role in connecting producers with markets, encouraging best practices, and supporting the long-term growth of both domestic consumption and exports, Mr. Rao observed.

He said the Speciality Coffee Association of India (SCAI) would host the IICF between February 12 and 14 in Bengaluru. It would be held in collaboration with the Coffee Board and Nescafé. This coffee exposition would gather the entire spectrum of India’s coffee ecosystems on a single platform, he added.

The 2026 edition of IICF would reflect the shift to a quality and experience-driven market with greater scale, deeper business engagement, and a stronger focus on showcasing the diversity and potential of Indian coffee across domestic and global markets, Hamsini Appadurai, president of SCAI, said.

According to industry captains, the festival, structured around a farm-to-cup framework, is expected to offer insights into the production, processing, roasting, and brewing of coffee through curated tastings, workshops, and cupping sessions.

These would also cover regional coffee profiles, processing techniques, and flavour management, encouraging informed consumption and a deeper appreciation of quality and traceability amongst domestic and global buyers and consumers.

Over 20,000 visitors and delegates, comprising coffee growers, processors, roasters, exporters, equipment manufacturers, cafe brands, baristas, and consumers from India, Germany, Japan, Italy and many coffee-producing and coffee-consuming countries are expected to attend the fest.

India-U.S. trade deal

The tariff reduction from 25% to zero (0%) would boost India’s coffee exports in general and shipments of speciality coffees in particular, said the coffee community, in response to a media query on the recent tariff impact on coffee.

It may be noted that the U.S. has granted duty-free access to Indian coffee as part of the recent trade deal.

India currently exports only a negligible amount of (over 10,000 tonnes of coffee to the United States) while the country’s exports volumes, including of instant coffees, to the US is expected to rise under the zero tariff regime, said an industry observer cum planter from Chikmagaluru.

Complete registration and renewal of homestays by March 31: Kodagu DC

pix

Kodagu Deputy Commissioner S.J. Somashekar has directed officials to complete registration of new homestays and renewal of licences for existing units in the district by March 31.

Chairing a meeting of the District Tourism Development Committee in Madikeri on Monday, Mr. Somashekar instructed officials to conduct physical inspections and process approvals through offline procedures, as online registration and renewal services are currently suspended.

Deputy Director of Tourism, Kodagu, Nithin Chakki, informed during the meeting that applications for licences had been received for 100 new homestays as of February 7, while 180 homestays had applied for licence renewal.

The Deputy Commissioner directed officials to personally visit properties to complete registration and renewal formalities and ensure that all pending applications are cleared by the end of March.

Suggestions were also made during the meeting to step up inspections of homestays to help curb issues related to narcotic drug consumption.

Kodagu Chamber of Commerce president Nagendra Prasad and Kodagu Homestays Association president Monty Ganesh, who participated in the discussions, noted that several homestays were forced to shut down during the COVID-19 period, severely affecting livelihoods.

Reviewing development works at Raja Seat and ‘Coorg Village’ — a project aimed at showcasing a traditional Kodagu village and promoting local culture and products — Mr. Somashekar directed officials of the Madikeri City Municipal Council and the Horticulture Department to constitute sub-committees, including stakeholders and traffic police personnel, to strengthen Raja Seat as a tourist attraction.

While Coorg Village was developed to showcase Kodagu’s crafts, spices, and local products, Horticulture Department Deputy Director Shashidhar noted that earlier plans to allot stalls to self-help groups and departments did not attract sufficient response.

Pointing out that thousands of tourists visit Raja Seat during weekends, creating parking congestion, Mr. Nagendra Prasad urged authorities to address the issue. The Deputy Commissioner directed officials to take immediate steps to improve parking facilities and commence related works at the earliest.

Mr. Somashekar also said he would take up the proposal with Railway authorities in Mysuru to expedite the plan to introduce a toy train service at Raja Seat.

Mr. Somashekar further suggested organising World Tourism Day more meaningfully every year and directed officials to launch a ‘Clean and Beautiful Kodagu’ campaign from March 1 to April 1 as part of the efforts to gradually phase out plastic use in the district.

In view of complaints that tourists travelling to Mandalpatti were being overcharged by vehicle operators, the Deputy Commissioner suggested introducing a prepaid vehicle service system from Madikeri.

Misleading product branding

Participants in the meeting also raised concerns over misleading trade practices, where products such as wine, chocolates, spices and even silk were being marketed under Kodagu’s name without authenticity.

Mr. Ganesh urged authorities to curb such practices, pointing out that many products sold under the Kodagu label lacked genuine local origin.

The Deputy Commissioner also noted that wine was being sold cheaply under the label of Kodagu homemade products and stressed the need to ensure that public health and safety standards are maintained.

From Darkness to Opportunity- Aahwahan Foundation’s Solar Initiative Brings Light to Remote Kodagu Villages

Karnataka :

In the remote villages of Karnataka’s Kodagu district, nightfall once meant darkness, uncertainty, and limitation. For hundreds of families, kerosene lamps were the only source of light, children struggled to study after sunset, and women faced safety concerns while completing daily chores. That reality is now changing with the launch of Project Chirag – Solar Village Initiative by Aahwahan Foundation.

The initiative is being implemented across 17 villages, including Nittur, Ponnappasanthe, Balele, Balyamandur, Nalkeri, and Kirgur, reaching 630 households and benefiting a population of 2,243 people. Designed to address energy poverty in underserved rural communities, Project Chirag provides clean, reliable solar-powered electricity to homes that previously had little or no access to dependable lighting.

Each household has been equipped with a comprehensive solar lighting system consisting of a 150Wp solar panel, a 120Ah solar tubular battery, and a 10A charge controller. The system powers four energy-efficient LED lights—two 10W and two 5W—along with an 18W pedestal fan and a mobile charging facility. With up to 48 hours of backup, families now have access to 3–4 hours of lighting and up to 8 hours of fan usage per cycle, depending on sunlight and consumption patterns.

The impact of the initiative goes beyond illumination. With safer, brighter homes, children are able to study in the evenings, women can carry out household activities without fear, and families feel more secure after dark—an important change in villages located near forest areas with frequent wild animal movement. The availability of electricity has also enabled small business owners and home-based entrepreneurs to extend their working hours, contributing to improved household incomes.

Reflecting on the transformation, Mr. Braja Kishore Pradhan, CEO & Founder of Aahwahan Foundation, said, “When I first visited these villages, darkness wasn’t just about the absence of light—it reflected a lack of opportunity, safety, and dignity. Through Project Chirag, we are seeing children study without fear, women move freely after sunset, and families reclaim their nights. Solar energy has restored not just visibility, but hope and independence.”

Residents across the villages echo this sentiment. “Before Project Chirag, studying and working after sunset was extremely difficult. Now our homes are bright, and life feels safer and easier,” said a resident of Nittur. A villager from Ponnappasanthe added, “Solar lights have changed everything for us. Children can study, women feel safer at night, and small businesses are growing.”

By replacing kerosene lamps with renewable solar power, Project Chirag is also delivering environmental benefits, reducing indoor air pollution and dependence on fossil fuels. Built with durable components and secure wiring, the systems are designed for long-term reliability and sustainability.

Project Chirag demonstrates how clean energy can become a catalyst for social development, combining safety, education, livelihood enhancement, and environmental responsibility. In the villages of Kodagu, electricity is no longer a luxury—it is becoming the foundation for opportunity, dignity, and a brighter future.
