Thousands witness sacred Cauvery Tula Sankramana at Talacauvery, Karnataka

The chants of “Kaveramme Ukki Baa” filled the air across Talacauvery as thousands of devotees witnessed the sacred Cauvery Tula Sankramana on Thursday.

The auspicious moment when the holy river Cauvery gushed out from the sacred Kundike occurred at the predicted time of 1.44 p.m., marking the highlight of the annual ritual.

The rituals were led by chief priest Prashanth Achar along with a team of 11 other priests. Devotees from across Kodagu district and neighbouring states, including Kerala and Tamil Nadu, gathered in large numbers to take part in the holy festivity.

Hundreds of Kodavas, dressed in their traditional attire, walked barefoot for about 8 km from Bhagamandala to Talacauvery in a display of devotion.

Elders, also clad in traditional Kodava attire, led the way playing the traditional dudi and singing baalo paat as they made their way to Talacauvery. Devotees from various communities, including members of the Are Baashe community from across the district, also participated in the rituals with reverence.

Among the participants were Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Wadiyar, who adorned the traditional white royal attire, and Virajpet MLA A.S. Ponnanna, who was dressed in traditional Kodava wear.

Both walked the 8 km stretch from Bhagamandala to Talacauvery and took part in the rituals. Madikeri MLA Dr Mantar Gowda, Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja, Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan and several others were also present at the ceremony.

Enhanced security measures and improved arrangements were in place at the temple premises to manage the large crowd. While a few devotees allegedly demanded the removal of barricades, the issue was resolved amicably, ensuring smooth movement for all.

A medical team from the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences was stationed at both Bhagamandala and Talacauvery to attend to any emergencies.

‘Annadhana’ (mass feeding) arrangements were made for devotees at both temples, while the Kodagu Ekikarana Ranga will host a month-long mass feeding programme at the centre.

Cultural programmes are also being organised at Talacauvery by the Kodava and Are Baashe Sahitya Academies.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy were scheduled to attend the event; however, their visit was cancelled due to unforeseen reasons.

“It is literally true that former Chief Minister late D. Devaraj Urs lent voice to voiceless and marginalised sections of the society during his tenure as the CM,” said MLC Dr. D. Thimmaiah.

He was speaking after inaugurating ‘Dhwani Kotta Dhani’ award ceremony organised jointly by Anveshana Seva Trust and Ursu Jagruti Academy Charitable Trust, at Institution of Engineers-India (IEI) on JLB Road here on Friday, marking the 110th birth anniversary of late former CM D. Devaraj Urs.

“Devaraj Urs always stood with the marginalised, micro, downtrodden and other voiceless communities, when it came to extending rights, benefits and facilities. Urs is still remembered for his outstanding  and exemplary service to the society while in power. Most of the politicians these days have homes in big cities like Bengaluru and Mysuru. But Urs did not have any house in the State capital or other big cities. However, his memory is etched in the minds of everyone and it still stands fresh,” Dr. Thimmaiah noted.

Highlighting the revolutionary  decisions taken by Urs while in power such as elimination of bonded labour, ban on manual scavenging and introduction of  ‘Uluvavane Bhumi Odeya’ Act (the tiller is the actual land  owner), the MLC said it was D.D. Urs who gave land to the landless and provided shelter to the shelterless. His contributions and achievements are memorable at the National-level even today, he added.

Lakshminarayana Yadav from Mysuru, Goa Liberation Movement fighter Girija Shankar Patil from Koppal and Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (Madikeri) Associate Professor Dr. Anand from Kodagu were conferred ‘Dhwani Kotta Dhani’ awards on the occasion.

Charitable Trust Vice-President H.A. Venkatesh, Hon. Secretary Dr. MGR Urs, former Tumkur University VC Dr. Y.S. Siddegowda, Anveshana Seva Trust Founder-President Amarnath Raje Urs, former Bengaluru Kanteerava Studios Chairperson Vijayalakshmi Urs and others were present.

Kodagu hospital gets dialysis, anti-rabies units

Kodagu’s public healthcare infrastructure got a boost with the launch of several advanced healthcare units at the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (KoIMS) Teaching Hospital in Madikeri.

The newly launched units include an Anti-Rabies Unit, and a Dialysis Unit. The facilities are equipped with hi-tech technologies for delivering quality healthcare services to the people of Kodagu.

MLA for Madikeri Mantar Gowda inaugurated the facilities. He reiterated his commitment to transforming KoIMS into a full-fledged multi-specialty hospital, a long-standing demand of the people of Kodagu. He assured that he would put in efforts to get grants from the government to further expand healthcare services at the institute.

Dr. Gowda urged the public to make full and best use of the new services and urged the hospital staff to deliver best medical care to patients.

KoIMS Dean Lokesh Kumar, District Surgeon Nanjundayya, Medical Superintendent Somashekar, and other senior health officials were present.

Madikeri to get critical care center on KIMS campus

Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha on Friday urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to release an additional sum of ₹70 crore for the completion of a 450-bed teaching hospital for Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Madikeri. A sum of ₹100 crore had been released for the hospital project and additional funds are essential for completing the works, he added.

Earlier, the MP held a meeting with the officials and doctors of KIMS on establishing a critical care center on the KIMS premises in Madikeri. The proposed center has been estimated to cost₹29 crore, he said.

Engineer Rajesh told the meeting that the critical care center has been proposed on 45-cent land on the KIMS campus and the tender process had also been done. He said the general wards of the teaching hospital of the KIMS are likely to be completed by November. The works need additional funds for completion, he said, adding that the critical care center will be completed in the next 15 months.

Mr. Simha told the officials to send the proposal on a critical care center to the government for the funds. MRI equipment for the teaching hospital and the mother and child hospital for Kodagu has become essential for improving public healthcare services, he added.

The hospital doctors and staff told the MP about the need for constructing quarters for the KIMS staff. In reply, the MP said suitable land for the staff quarters will be provided.

The concerned engineers told the meeting that the land on Murnad Road belonged to the KIMS and the same land parcel can be used for building KIMS’ staff quarters.

Dr Ramachandra Kamath receives best paper award

Madikeri : 

Dr Ramachandra Kamath, professor and head, department of community medicine, Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences and visiting faculty, Edward & Cynthia Institute of Public Health received the Dr R N Roy best paper award from Dr C V Ananda Bose, Governor of West Bengal recently.

Dr Kamath received the award for his paper titled, ‘Assessment of health status and impact of pollution from thermal power plant on health of population and environment around the plant in Udupi district Karnataka’ published in Indian Journal of Public Health of the year 2022, Vol. 66, Issue 2.
