Leading in Clean Air and Sanitation Already renowned for having the cleanest air in the country, Kodagu district’s Madikeri has now added another feather to its cap with this prestigious recognition. The achievement is largely credited to the tireless efforts of the city’s sanitation and civic workers, whose dedication has made this milestone possible.
A Call for Citizen Responsibility Social activists have emphasized that maintaining Madikeri’s status as a clean city and preserving its pristine air is a collective responsibility. Citizens are urged to actively participate in cleanliness initiatives to ensure the city continues to shine as an example for others to follow.

Justice Suraj Govindaraj ruled that the state cannot exploit a mistake made by a citizen in categorising the land as ‘sagu bane land’ when it was, in fact, alienated ‘sagu bane land’, and retain the deposited amount.

The Karnataka High Court has directed the Forest Department to refund Rs 4.33 lakh, along with 6 per cent interest, to the legal heirs of a Kodagu landowner, Mahabaleshwar Bhat, who had deposited the amount in 1982.
Justice Suraj Govindaraj ruled that the state cannot exploit a mistake made by a citizen in categorising the land as ‘sagu bane land’ when it was, in fact, alienated ‘sagu bane land’, and retain the deposited amount.
Bhat, who owned 38.5 acres in Biligeri Village, Madikeri taluk, Kodagu district, had received permission on February 1, 1983, to cut 349 trees on the property. He subsequently paid Rs 4,33,082, the assessed value of the trees. However, he later realised that the land had been classified as alienated ‘sagu bane land’ since 1897, making the payment unnecessary.
Bhat requested a refund from the authorities, but his plea was rejected by the Forest Department on April 25, 2012, citing the Karnataka Land Revenue Act, 1964, as grounds for denial. After the department’s appellate authority also dismissed his appeal, Bhat moved the high court.
During the pendency of the case, Bhat passed away and his legal representatives were substituted as petitioners in 2023. The court found that the Forest Department failed in its duty to verify the land’s classification.
“In fact, it was for the assistant and chief conservator of forest to verify these from the records concerned and not go by the statement made by the petitioner himself. Whenever any application is filed by any person claiming permission to cut trees, there is a duty imposed on the authority granting such permission to verify the details. If at all the details had been verified, it would have been clear that the land in question is alienated ‘sagu bane land’ and not un-alienated ‘sagu bane land’.
This aspect has been made clear by the deputy commissioner in his order dated March 29, 2010,” Justice Suraj Govindaraj said.

It is the duty of the forest authorities to verify official records before allowing applications seeking permission to cut trees, the High Court of Karnataka has said, while finding fault with the authorities for refusing to refund the amount deposited by a land owner by mistake, though he was not required to deposit it while seeking permission to cut trees on his land.
Justice Suraj Govindaraj passed the order while allowing a petition filed by N. Mahabaleshwara Bhat, a resident of Biligeri village in Madikeri taluk of Kodagu district.
The petitioner, who died during the pendency of petition filed in 2016, deposited ₹4.33 lakh with the forest authorities to seek permission to cut several trees on his Sagu Bane land.
However, he realised later that his was alienated Sagu Bane land for which there was no need to deposit money, and hence he requested the authorities to refund the deposited amount. But the forest authorities rejected his request, stating that he himself had described his land as Sagu Bane land in his application.
Negating the contention of the authorities, the court said that it was for the Assistant Conservator of Forest and the Chief Conservator of Forest to verify nature of the land from the records and not to go by the statement made in the application.
If at all the details of the land had been verified by the forest authorities, it would have been clear that the land in question was alienated Sagu Bane land as this aspect was made clear by the Deputy Commissioner in his order passed in 2010, the court said, while stating that there was a duty imposed on the authority to very the records before granting such permissions.

After decades of persistent demand, the long-awaited dream of having a dedicated cricket ground in Kodagu district is finally being realized. Construction work has begun on an international cricket stadium near Palemadu village, situated in the scenic Madikeri taluk. This marks a significant milestone for the region, which has long yearned for a sporting facility capable of hosting major cricket events.
The Kodagu district administration has earmarked 12 acres of land for the construction of the stadium, with the project estimated to cost around Rs 50 crore. The design and layout of the ground will follow the model of the famous Dharamsala Cricket Stadium in Himachal Pradesh, though it will be slightly larger than Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium. This ambitious project will involve leveling half of a nearby hill, a complex and costly process to create a world-class sporting venue.
The construction of this stadium has been met with both excitement and opposition. For years, there were protests against the proposed location, primarily due to the presence of a graveyard on the land. Local residents from Paisari village, in particular, were firm in their stance, demanding that no cricket ground should be built over the graveyard. Despite the protests, the project had to be put on hold for some time. However, the issue was eventually resolved when former District Collector Dr. BC Satish intervened and convened a meeting to find a solution. It was decided that one acre of land would be set aside for the cemetery, while the rest would be used for the cricket ground.
Though some residents still insisted on reserving two acres for the cemetery, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) was determined to move forward with the project. Their resolve to build the ground regardless of the protests has finally borne fruit. With all hurdles cleared, construction work has now commenced, with heavy machinery such as JCB and Hitachi excavators already working to level the land.
The project is expected to be completed within the next four years, bringing a major sporting facility to the district.
A boon for local sports enthusiasts.
This stadium will be a game-changer for the region, providing a much-needed infrastructure for local sports enthusiasts and opening doors to higher levels of competition. Currently, Kodagu boasts an astro turf hockey stadium, but there has been a glaring absence of facilities capable of hosting even state-level sports events. The new cricket stadium will not only enhance the region’s sports infrastructure but also serve as a hub for aspiring athletes.
While the construction of the cricket stadium is a significant step forward, sports enthusiasts in the district are also calling for the development of other key sports facilities. The first-ever ‘Coffee Dasara’ launched at Gandhi Maidan as part of the recently held Madikeri Dasara was a ground-breaking initiative to elevate the coffee industry and engage the farming community. This event raised awareness about the transformative changes in coffee cultivation and the various facilities available to growers.
Conceptualised by Dr. Manthar Gowda, MLA from Madikeri Constituency, the two-day event on Oct. 7 and 8 featured a diverse array of coffee enterprises and 34 departmental stalls, all dedicated to equipping growers in the district with essential information and resources.
Numerous organisations also participated, setting up stalls to offer supplementary materials and insights related to various agricultural products, including coffee, thereby fostering a spirit of collaboration and innovation in the agricultural sector.
Inaugurating the Coffee Dasara, Agriculture Minister Cheluvarayaswamy affirmed the Government’s commitment to standing by farmers to ensure the comprehensive development of all agricultural activities, particularly coffee cultivation, which serves as the backbone of Kodagu’s economy.
He noted that coffee cultivation does not fall under the purview of the Agriculture Department or the State Government. In various regions of the State, paddy cultivation is widespread, supported by reservoirs. However, water availability often decreases as crops mature, leading to difficulties for farmers, he said.
“To tackle this issue, the State Government has decided to create farm ponds (krishi honda) in command areas, which will aid farmers during water shortage. The Government plans to grant permission for the construction of 250 farm ponds in Kodagu district,” he assured.
Escaping modernisation
As the chief guest, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dinesh Gundu Rao, stressed that no region can escape the wave of modernisation. He underscored the need for balanced development while maintaining cultural roots.
Emphasising the promotion of coffee cultivation and industry, he advocated for the establishment of local coffee brands and raising awareness about domestic coffee consumption.
Virajpet MLA Ajjikuttira S. Ponnanna praised the focus on coffee cultivation during the Madikeri Dasara celebrations, expressing hope that importance of coffee would continue to be emphasised in future Dasara festivals, spreading its significance throughout State.
MLA Dr. Manthar Gowda highlighted the numerous challenges faced by coffee growers and called for support, urging Ministers not to permit the conversion of paddy fields into non-agricultural land to preserve Kodagu’s agricultural heritage.
South Indian filter coffee
Coffee Board Chairman Dinesh Devabrinda announced a plan ‘from farm to market,’ aimed at doubling coffee production over the next decade while maintaining quality.
He noted that the Government of India recognises the significance of coffee and has allocated Rs. 307 crore to the Coffee Board for the development of the coffee industry. Of this, Rs. 19 crore will be provided to coffee growers in Kodagu through various assistance schemes.
Currently, the average coffee consumption per Indian is 30 cups. If this figure can be increased to at least 60 cups, internal coffee consumption could rise from 2,50,000 tonnes to 3,50,000 tonnes, significantly benefiting farmers.
He emphasised that South Indian filter coffee is among the best globally, and the Coffee Board is actively working on initiatives to promote this filter coffee on a worldwide scale.

In a significant advancement for the healthcare needs of Kodagu District, an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machine was inaugurated in Madikeri on Sunday, fulfilling a long-standing demand from the local community.
This state-of-the-art facility is now operational at the teaching hospital of the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).
Minister for Medical Education Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil inaugurated the facility, alongside Madikeri MLA Manthar Gowda and Virajpet MLA A.S. Ponnanna.
Previously, residents of Kodagu had to travel to Mysuru, Bengaluru or Mangaluru to access MRI services, as no such diagnostic facility was available in any Government or private medical centre within the district.
The introduction of the MRI scanning facility at the teaching hospital will enable patients to receive crucial diagnostics right in Madikeri, streamlining their access to necessary medical treatment based on the reports generated.
Minister Patil said that this installation will significantly enhance the ability of patients to undergo essential MRI diagnostic tests locally. He also assured the establishment of a cardiac centre at the District Hospital in Madikeri under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, emphasising the need for improved healthcare facilities in the hilly terrain of Kodagu.
The MRI equipment, initially sanctioned for another location, was relocated to Madikeri due to persistent advocacy from MLA Manthar Gowda. Additionally, Minister Patil confirmed that a proposal for Rs. 60 crore has been submitted to the State Government for the construction of a new building at the District Hospital, which is expected to receive approval soon.

International Coffee Day was observed with fervour across Kodagu. While the women of Codagu Women’s Coffee Awareness Body (CWCAB) served hot cups of filter coffee in the morning, the Rotary Club members served coffee to everyone gathered at Raja’s Seat in the evening.
“We want to promote our coffee and we decided to use the opportunity of the International Coffee Day to serve everyone a warm cup of filter coffee,” said Jyothika Bopanna, the Joint Secretary of CWCAB and added that the government needs to support the sector as production has come down. The international coffee day was observed in Madikeri at Coffee Krupa building.
Meanwhile, the Rotary Misty Hills organisation hosted a unique inaugural event to introduce Coorg Coffee to tourists. A total of 1,000 cups of filter coffee was sponsored by Rotary Misty Hills and the event was inaugurated by DC Charulata Somal and ZP CEO Bhanwar Singh Meena, who signed the painting of a coffee cup created by artist BR Satish.
