Tata Starbucks CEO: Our business in India continues to exceed expectations

Avani Saglani Davda, the CEO at Tata Starbucks Ltd since September 2012, has played a key role in the development of the joint venture between Tata group and Starbucks Corp, which runs the world’s largest coffee chain.

The company recently entered South India by opening a coffee outlet in Bangalore. In an interview with Business Line, Davda shares the joint venture’s plans for the India market. Edited excerpts:

Now that you have entered South India, how many stores are you planning in this region?

In addition to the flagship store at Koramangala (Bangalore), Tata Starbucks will open two more stores by the end of this year in Bengaluru. It is an important city entry that demonstrates our long-term commitment to expand across India and we will continue to work thoughtfully to build a strong foundation and open stores quickly.

The South is primarily a coffee drinking market. Can we expect any specific flavour for both food and beverages here?

We are committed to delivering a locally relevant Starbucks experience to our customers; one that reflects the Starbucks brand as well as India’s rich culinary heritage. Our store here in Bangalore will introduce a strong mix of international favourites as well as specially designed food offerings to reflect local flavours. Additionally, our store offers a broad beverage portfolio to include a wide range of Starbucks signature espresso-based beverages and Starbucks VIA Ready Brew.

We will introduce the India Estates blend to consumers in Bengaluru. This blend is Tata Starbucks’ special country-specific coffee, developed thoughtfully with Tata Coffee for the Indian market and reflects the high quality Arabica coffee available in India. Created to celebrate our first anniversary in the country in October 2013, this coffee captures the essence and rich heritage of the Indian coffee history. Additionally, with our entry in the Indian market, we launched the Indian Espresso Roast which is sourced locally through the coffee sourcing and roasting agreement between Starbucks and Tata Coffee.

What will be the price range of the food and coffee at the India stores?

We strive to price our products competitively based upon the assessment of how we can provide high-quality products and an uncompromised experience.

We understand how important it is to our customers that they receive a high quality experience at an appropriate value, and we believe that our approach to value holistically balances the experience we provide customers with our need to effectively run our business.

You had a target of 50 stores in 2012. Are you revising this number?

Since our foray into the Indian market in October 2012, we have launched 30 stores across Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru and Pune.

We are overwhelmed by the way in which our customers have embraced us. With a little over one year of being in operation in the country, I can assure you that our business in India continues to exceed our expectations.

We work to balance the need to run the business effectively while ensuring that we deliver the highest-quality Starbucks experience to our customers.

It’s not only about running several stores across the geography, but to nurture each store to provide the experience and deliver the brand promise to customers – every day.

What kind of investment you have planned for 2014 in India? When do you plan to break even?

We are committed to India for the long-term and the JV will invest long term in the development of our partners (employees), coffee growing communities and the neighbourhoods we serve. Our business in India continues to exceed our expectations and we remain focused on a long-term, disciplined growth in this dynamic market to establish a strong presence here, delivering an elevated coffeehouse experience to our customers in India.

What has been the experience so far? Are you revising your footprints here?

Our journey over the last year has been very gratifying and the venture has attracted acclaim from Indian consumers. This journey has only just begun and we will continue to work to exceed the expectations of our customers.

We are confident in our ability to build and grow the Starbucks brand in India, and continue to remain excited about the opportunities India presents for our business.

Chikka beats Rashid to win his maiden title

Mumbai:

golfKF18dec2013Rookie Chikkarangappa S of Bangalore upstaged pre-tournament favourite Rashid Khan of Delhi in a playoff to bag his maiden professional title at the CG Open 2013 played at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club in Mumbai.

It turned out to be a day of twists and turns. Rashid Khan (64-64-66-70) maintained his overnight three-shot lead till the eighth hole as both he and Chikkarangappa (64-65-68-67) made two birdies and a bogey each on the first eight holes. The tide turned over the next five holes. Rashid dropped bogeys on the ninth, 10th and 13th as a result of a few missed putts and a poor tee shot while Chikka sank a 17-feet birdie putt on the 12th. Chikka thus went ahead by one shot on the 13th.

Chikka stayed ahead by one till the 17th after both he and Rashid made birdies on the 16th. Rashid however, came back in the contest with a birdie on the 18th thanks to a near-perfect third shot from the fairway that landed within a foot of the flag. Chikka on the other hand, missed an up and down for birdie from the bunker wall on the 18th. The two golfers, who have grown up playing against each other on the junior and amateur circuits, headed for a playoff after ending the regulation 72 holes with matching totals of 16-under-264.

The 20-year-old Chikka, who hails from the Eagleton Golf Resort near Bangalore, sealed the deal on the first playoff hole against 22-year-old Rashid, who lost a playoff at the CG Open for the second year in succession. Chikka found the rough and then the bunker during the playoff but recovered well with a 12-feet birdie putt conversion. Rashid on his part missed the birdie after a poor bunker shot.

Chikka’s winning cheque of Rs. 16,16,500 propelled him from fifth place to second position on the Rolex Rankings. Rashid Khan continues to lead the Rolex Rankings with an impressive margin of about Rs. 11 lakh.

Chikka said, “It feels great to win my first title in my first season as a professional. I’ve been in contention in at least six events this season but somehow could not deliver in the final stages. I drew a lot of experience from those tournaments and that helped me break the all-important victory barrier today.

“I performed really well with the 3-wood and the putter this week. I made a lot of fairways and dropped just five bogeys in the whole tournament. I stayed in touch with Rashid in the initial stages and capitalized with some long putts when he faltered midway through the round. The turning point was the crucial 13-feet downhill par putt that I converted on the 15th. That kept me ahead and gave me momentum. I was confident heading into the playoff despite missing an up and down from the bunker wall on the 18th.

“This win will give me a huge boost for the rest of the season. I dedicate my victory to the Late Mr. M Ashok Kumar, the former Chairman and Managing Director of Eagleton – The Golf Resort, who passed away earlier this year. He was like a father figure to me and encouraged and supported me for many years,” added Chikka.
Bangladeshi Md Zamal Hossain Mollah (67-68-66-69) secured third place at 10-under-270 after shooting a 69 in the final round.

Delhi’s Vinod Kumar was a further shot behind in fourth place while K Prabagaran of Sri Lanka claimed fifth place at seven-under-273.

Fashion equalled heritage

Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar was a unique royal in that he was wellknown for his association with the fashion world. A fashion designer himself, he promoted the traditional Mysore Silk sarees under his own brand name ‘Royal Silk of Mysore’. Aimed at reviving people’s interest in these sarees, Wadiyar held several fashion shows and was constantly in touch with fashion consultants.

Fashion guru Prasad Bidappa
recalled the directives he got from the Maharaja whenever they worked together. “He came to the business of design to ensure that there was a continuity in using Mysore Silk. He strongly believed that people should not forget heritage. His entire collections were based on that. It wasn’t so much of a fashion collection as a heritage textile collection. He started designing to inspire young designers. He wasn’t interested in becoming a 100 shops kind of label. It was a project to introduce Karnataka Silks to designers of India. A lot of people paid attention to the silks since he introduced it.”

Recalling memorable moments, Bidappa said, “He was such a wise person that it was always good to spend time with him. He was knowledgable about many things ranging from politics to criticism, history of our state, culture and tradition. He was a wonderful human being, warm, friendly and always full of humour. He’s a special person. He’s different from most people you meet. He had an enormous sense of history. Recently he wasn’t going out much. He was working more from home and doing a lot of writing. Socially he wasn’t interested in keeping a high profile. He was a private person that way.”

Deepa Subramanian, a city based gallerist recalled, “At the launch of my gallery in 2010 April, he was the Chief Guest. He initially said ‘I can’t promise you; don’t mention my name on the invite’. But he came and stayed for about an hour. He was such a gentleman. No fuss at all. He came on time, did his job. and wouldn’t talk much.”

Passionate cricketer
I am extremely saddened by this news. He was a very well-respected individual. Personally, I have had very limited interaction with him. He once invited me for a party at his palace and I remember him calling me up to congratulate me after I became the captain of India. He was not well in the run up to the recent KSCA elections. I wish he had taken care of his health. My thoughts are with his family.
Anil Kumble, former India cricket captain

He was very happy when we won the recent KSCA elections. He had definite plans for the next three years and was very keen to implement them at the earliest. His demise is really unfortunate.
Brijesh Patel, former Test cricketer

As a Mysorean who grew up watching Mysore’s royal family, I feel a great sense of loss at the passing away of Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar. We didn’t live too far from the Mysore palace. I fondly remember watching Narasimharaja Wadiyar and his father during the colourful Dasara celebrations every year. Mysore has been synonymous with the palace and the royal family. Mysoreans will agree that the Maharaja tradition has enriched Mysore and the royal family has made unparalleled contribution. We considered the royals as part of our own families. Today, I am saddened.
Javagal Srinath, former Test cricketer

Ace in the game of courtship

SupriyaBopannaKF16dec2013
They got married in 2012 and now Rohan Bopanna and Supriya are back on home ground on a break.

Away from his practice sessions in Hyderabad, Rohan is all set for his season ahead, where he is ready to team with partner Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi for the upcoming Australian Open. We caught up with the World No 3 doubles player and his pretty wife about tennis and things they like doing, when they were in the city to unveil the season’s Platinum Love bands.

PLAYING BALL

“Playing with different partners has taught us important lessons, especially as far as mutual understanding is concerned. This season, I have worked very hard on my speed on court and volley,” says Rohan. While Supriya quips in between that at times she feels he is married to his court partners, “He spends more time with them than with me,” she reveals. Rohan explains that reason his partnership with French player, Eduard Roger Vasselin at the Wimbledon didn’t do well was because they were not well-acquainted with each other. “Aisam and I have great understanding, which unfortunately, Roger and I did not have the chance to achieve,” he feels.

PLATINUM MOMENT OF LOVE

Despite being from the same community, both Rohan and Supriya faced quite a few hurdles before getting hitched. Rohan was so besotted that he even designed the engagement rock, sorry ring! “I designed it with the help of a friend in New York while I was playing the US Open. And asked her best friend who I had never met to give me her size,” he recalls.

For those who do not know, Rohan fell in love with his wife at a night club in the city and confesses that no one even had the faintest whiff of their relationship till they were married. Supriya recalls, “For me, it wasn’t love at first sight but something that grew over time.” Incidentally, everyone knew about Rohan’s intentions four months before the actual proposal. “I fell for his humility. He has never shooed away a fan,” states the loving wife, adding, “I remember once we had gone for a movie with friends and a fan asked for an autograph. As he was about to sign, I pushed the fan to ask for a picture too. Rohan went red and it was endearing to see him blush. I love putting him in the spot.”

Supriya has just finished specialising in adolescence, family and marriage psychology. She has also worked with autistic children for a year. Rohan who is eight years her senior, wanted her to finish her education before she starts touring with him. Now she will head to Australia. “He prefers NY more because of the food and the city life. He is a big foodie,” she adds. The couple’s idea of quality time and romance is not travelling to exotic locales, but instead sleeping on their own bed and eating home cooked food. “We love partying and dancing and host house parties because there is no restriction on the time, dancing and music,” expresses the psychologist.

Calling for the best brewmasters

Get ready to battle for the best espresso at the National Barista Championship to be conducted by Coffee Board in January 2014. K Basavaraj, head of quality control division and the convener of the championship said, “Till last year, the championship used to be conducted by the Speciality Coffee Association of India (SCAI). The Coffee Board has now taken over from this year because we have the expertise, and the championship can be organised better.”

The championship is organised to identify people with the best barista skills. “We invite individuals who are working at various cafe chains to participate in this competition. Even house wives or people who know the art can participate. These people can get an entry into the competition if they know the espresso method of brewing,” explained Basavaraj.

According to him, today there are many youngsters who are taking interest in the job of a brewmaster and many have become professionals in coffee making. “This competition will, in a way, give them recognition. They can also be placed in top cafes. Many previous barista champions are now working in Dubai and such other places. The 2014 championship will be conducted as per the rules and regulations of World Barista Championship 2013. This competition coincides with the India International Coffee Festival, which will probably be held on January 21st and 22nd 2014. A couple of international jury members will select the finalist. This will also give the winner a good international platform,” he said and further added, “We have a another competition named Latte Hot Championship where the best design on the coffee will win the prize.”

Whether this national level championship will lead the participants to World Barista Championship? “We are yet to discuss about it, which will be done after this championship,” he said.

B-3 unveiled

B-3 has three actors. While we all know that Harshika Poonacha and Srikanth are a part of the film, the team has been very particular about keeping details about the third actor under wraps. Even on the day of its release, they steadfastly maintained that that would be the mystery element of the tale. But they let us in on some memories — scary, hilarious and heart-warming — from the making of the film.

(A still from the film )
(A still from the film )

There was a scene in which Sriki (Srikanth) had to act like the characters of two girls (who are friends) and enact their conversation about each other’s love lives. Since it was a three-and-a-half minute single shot, he had to prepare his act thoroughly. As he found it difficult to rehearse both the characters’ parts at one go, Harshika helped him prepare for almost 5-6 hours. Though she did not have a scene that day, she came on the set only to help Sriki.

We were shooting at an old factory that was all dusty and had creepers all over. One night, when I was sitting alone in a corner before my shot, I heard something rustle near me. Scared, I asked Sriki, who was sitting a little ahead of me, if he too had heard it. He hadn’t, but when I heard it again, I got up and sat near him. The next morning, we found the scales of a snake near where I was sitting initially. That was scary.

A film that was to have just one song ended up with five tracks. The most memorable composition for me would be the romantic number Allondu Belli Moda. I’ve always wanted to compose a song without using too many instruments and I was able to do that with this track. We’ve only used a guitar for the rhythm.

When we were going from Rameswaram to a village called Dhanushkodi in a van, all of us decided to sit on top of the vehicle instead of inside it. Sriki, Shyam and the rest of us found it very difficult to maintain balance as the van did not have an external carrier that we could hold on to. Instead, we just held on to each other and had a good laugh about it.
