TOI Social Impact Awards: Wonder doctor’s success mantra

Mysore :
As a child M Jadeyegowda first saw Dr H Sudarshan dispense medicines to tribals at Biligiri Ranaga Hills near here. Initially, he stayed away from the doctor. Later, curiosity drew the tribal boy to the doctor. Dr Sudarshan and his Karuna Trust became the biggest influences on his life.

Other than providing medical help, Dr Sudarshan taught children in the tribal parts of Karnataka’s Chamarajnagar district. Jadeyegowda was a reluctant student. Today, he’s an assistant professor at Kodagu’s College of Forestry. “As a kid, I saw the doctor conduct surgeries with minimum facilities,” Jadeyegowda,43, says.

In October 2006, when the Vivekananda Girijana Kalyana Kendra (VGKK) — to which Karuna Trust is affiliated — celebrated silver jubilee, Jadeyegowda, MSc, shook hands with President Abdul Kalam. He was one of the six students who had attended the tribal school set up by the NGO 25 years back. Jadeye now heads VGKK and is a trustee of the Karuna Trust. “I’m more comfortable being recognised as a beneficiary,” he says. “Jadeye is a beneficiary of our health and education programmes. That helped him,” Dr Sudarshan says

Kodagu boy Suhail among 22 chosen for National Bravery Awards

Madikeri, Jan 19:

Suhail K M, a 17-year-old Kodagu boy, who without knowing swimming, had jumped into overflowing Cauvery River to rescue his classmate, who was about to drown, is among 22 children chosen for the National Bravery Awards-2012.
It was raining cats and dogs on November 3, 2011. The Cauvery River at Bhagamandala in Kodagu district had turned into a fast-flowing torrent.

A group of Class 8 students from the Sri Cauvery Junior College at Bhagamandala in Madikeri taluk attempted to cross the river via a bridge.

One of the boys, Faruq, stopped to clean his muddied trousers. Losing a toe-hold on the bank, he slipped into the water and the current carried him downstream. Faruq, who did not know how to swim, cried for help, the water entering his mouth and nostrils with each cry.

Seeing this, Suhail, who also did not know swimming, immediately jumped into the water and made his way towards Faruq. Reaching the ailing boy, he somehow managed to get to the shore and safety.

Suhail’s act of courage has rendered him suitable for an award from the National Awards for Bravery in 2012. Suhail is a resident of Ayangeri village near Bhagamandala. He wants to become a medical doctor.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will present the awards to children prior to Republic Day and all children will participate in the parade.

Apart from giving each awardee Rs 1 lakh cash prize, the government will also ensure that they pay no education costs till the graduate level. Awardees will also get a scholarship, which will allow them to study professional courses such as engineering and medicine.

I’m thrilled: Ashwini Ponnappa

Did you expect the Arjuna award this year?
Honestly, I didn’t think about it. I’ve been training extremely hard and trying to do my best in the game. I think my hard work paid off when Jwala and I won gold during the Commonwealth Games and then the bronze at the World Championship. My aim was to win a medal for the country during the London Olympics, but unfortunately that could not happen…

When Jwala and you missed out on the quarterfinal berth by a difference of just one point despite winning the match, it seemed as though the two of you had no clue as to what happened?
Yes, Jwala and I were unaware that we failed to make it to the quarterfinals despite winning the match. We knew we had to win by a certain margin, but the exact number eluded us. It was much after the match that we got to know of our fate. Plus, there was so much drama happening around that time…

Drama?
To be honest, a few countries did not play fair and we had to bear the consequences. The Chinese and Indonesians have always ruled the roost in badminton. Post our ouster, we lodged a formal protest, but it fell on deaf ears. Of course, the complaint was lodged a little late in the day. Gopi sir (Pullela Gopichand) too was very vocal about the issue. However, the decision was completely unfair. We have to work so hard to book a berth for ourselves at the Olympics. But there are countries like Australia, South Africa, Canada and others, who don’t really have to qualify as they get in through the Continental spot.

Heard that you won’t be teaming up with Jwala in the future?

That story is completely wrong. I’m not planning on changing my doubles partner. It’s just that Jwala is taking a break now and since I’ll be playing, I have to pair up with other players. We’ll be back soon.

What about playing singles?
It’s not easy to shift gears from doubles to singles and vice versa in a blink of an eye. Both formats need a lot of training and different sets of disciplines. I’m happy playing
doubles for now.

Saina, Jwala and you are credited with making the sport glamourous.
I’m flattered when people call me glamourous. When Saina broke into the scene, she brought along a lot of new fans of the sport. Ditto with Jwala and me. One has to be a good performer to get people into watching a sport which is not cricket. It’s nice to be well-dressed on court. Of course, people have loved watching us play and that’s a great thing.

‘Tiger Ashok Kumar’ retires

Caption: A file photo of Governor H.R. Bhardwaj presenting President’s Medal to ACP B.B. Ashok Kumar.
Mysore, Aug. 2

ACP B.B. Ashok Kumar, nicknamed Tiger Ashok Kumar for his valorous feats, retired on Tuesday.

He earned the epithet of Tiger when he was PSI at Ulsoor Police Station, B’lore for chasing and catching chain-snatchers.

He won the President’s Medal thrice and CM’s medal once. Other Police officers who won the President’s Medal thrice are Shankar Bidari, Gopal Halsur and G.A. Bawa.

Biddanda Ashok Kumar, hails from Parane village in Kodagu.

He was a terror for criminals and is credited with 18 encounters. While being a part of STF to nab Veerappan, Ashok Kumar had slain 13 accomplices of the brigand and shot down three notorious anti-social elements.

His promotion to DCP was challenged by some at KAT. It is said that even though KAT favoured Ashok Kumar, he was deprived owing to petty politics.

Finally, when the order for promotion came last month, some petitioned against it at High Court. The court’s verdict was expected on the very day he was to retire. Ironically, the court deferred the verdict to a further date.

Cycle the leader in domestic incense market

Consider this: Agarbattis handcrafted by women from remote parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are spreading fragrance in homes in Brazil, Chile and the US.

Surprised? Well, you shouldn’t be. Handcrafted incense sticks are becoming as fashionable as yoga and ayurveda in the West, thanks to the growing fascination among westerners for Eastern culture.

Cycle Pure Agarbathies, the flagship brand of Mysore-based NR Group, is keeping no stones unturned to make the brand a hit among youngsters as well. Keeping pace with the times, the company plans to launch its e-portal next month.

“We have to constantly innovate. The scope of growth in the industry is very limited. There are no economies of scale,” said Arjun M Ranga, managing partner of the third-generation business conglomerate founded by his grandfather NR Ranga in 1948.

With the untimely demise of his father, NR Ranga was faced with the responsibility of raising the family from a young age. “My grandfather had to work hard to earn a living. He used to take tuition for his classmates and seniors,” said Ranga.

Years later, having saved up a modest Rs500, Ranga moved to Mysore from Coorg where he was working in a coffee estate. “Post independence, he felt the time was right for him to start something of his own. He started by trading various products and then saw an opportunity in the agarbatti industry.”

Today Cycle is a household name across the country. For TK Bhattacharya, a retired banker, ‘Cycle all-in-one pack’ is the best buy. “It smells great and gives value for money. I purchase a pack and it lasts for around five months.”

Speaking on how the name ‘Cycle’ came about, Ranga said: “My grandfather wanted a universal symbol that would mean the same anywhere in the world. For instance, a cycle is called a cycle in any language,” he said.

The company received its first export order from Sri Lanka in 1954. Soon it started exporting agarbattis to other countries, including the US, Chile, Japan and Africa. The company, which exported agarbattis to only 12 countries in 2001, now enjoys a presence in over 60 countries. Cycle is also the leader in the agarbatti industry in the country worth Rs1,500 crore, with a 15% share in the organised market, followed by ITC.

“The West is a growing market for us as there is a huge fascination for eastern culture among westerners. The US is our biggest market overseas,” Ranga said, adding that though incense sticks are purchased for spiritual purposes in the West, they are also popular as a fragrance product.

Gulshan Dhawan, who has been living in New Jersey for the past 30 years, is a big fan of the brand. “Every time someone came from India, I used to ask him/her to bring around 10 packets of Cycle’s sandalwood agarbatti which has a very natural aroma. Thankfully, the brand is now available at the supermarket here. I also present these agarbattis as gifts to my American friends here,” said Dhawan.

The company is keen to come up with unique fragrances. “We set up a dedicated fragrance laboratory in 1958. All our fragrances are developed in-house and only family members know the secret ingredients. There is a constant need to innovate and come up with new combinations and permutations. A few years ago, fruity scents were in great demand; now people prefer earthy, musky fragrances,” Ranga said.

“Creating fragrance is a scientific and lengthy process. My brother has done a degree specialising in the art of making fragrance,” he added.

Recognising the need to stay competitive, the company diversified into products like car freshener and home decor products. “We will launch more products later this year,” Ranga said.

The company also puts a lot of emphasis on packaging its products, with around 20 designers working on revamping and modernising the brand’s look. Among the designers are those who are recruited from National Institute of Design (NID).

Jobs for rural women
The humble agarbatti provides employment to more than 30,000 rural women across the country. “We train these woman who work from home and deliver raw materials to their doorstep. The woman, called, ‘home workers’, roll about 10 kgs of bamboo sticks a month, with a potential to earn Rs3,500,” Ranga said. The company also takes the responsibility of educating children of poor employees.

Take the case of 29-year-old Manjamma. She is happy as she can now repay the loan of Rs2,000 her husband had taken from a local moneylender. “Once rolled into charcoal powder and adhesive, the bamboo sticks get transformed into raw agarbattis, which are then taken to the factory where fragrance is added and packaging is done,” she said. Manjamma starts work at 10 am, after completing household chores and sending her kids to the school, and winds up work By 6 pm.

Like most labour-intensive sectors, the agarbatti industry is also facing shortage of people. “With industrialisation taking place at a rampant pace, women have more options to choose from. They prefer working as maids and housekeepers where remuneration is more attractive. They are no longer keen on housework,” Ranga said. The increase in the prices of raw materials also eats into the company’s margins.

However, a chief executive of a rival company is all praise for the brand. “Though we are rivals, I must admit that Cycle’s success gave us confidence to enter this industry,” he said on the condition of anonymity.

Asked about the company’s outlook, Ranga said it will continue to strive to provide more employment and give back to the society. “We would also like to give people more reasons to pray,” he laughed.
