The Department of Kannada & Culture has organised an ‘Interaction with achievers’ programme at Chamarajendra Government College for Visual Arts (CAVA) in Siddarthanagar on Sept. 5 at 11 am.
City Sculptor Appaneravanda Kiran Subbaiah, who was honoured with Vachana Chitra-Rachana Pithamaha M. Veerappa Datti Prashasti-2022 by the JSS Mahavidyapeetha, will be the guest for this month’s interaction with students.
Subbaiah is a skilled sculptorr hailing from Parane village in Kodagu, now settled in Mysuru.
He studied sculpture at Chamarajendra Technical Institute (now Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts) and is known for creating multi-dimensional sculptures — a specialised genre which seems to be a single statue but actually has several more angles to it.
His unique feature is the creation of sculptures with two, three, four, or five dimensions in a single stone, which can be seen in a total of 212 sculptures, showcasing 655 different varieties.
His house near Highway Circle in Bannimanatap is a one-of-its-kind sculpture museum aptly named ‘Shilpaniketana.’
In 2021, Kiran was conferred with Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy Award.

Acclaimed Bharatanatyam artiste from Kodagu, Mukkatira Shilpa Nanjappa, has been selected for the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for 2024 by the Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) under the category ‘Overall Contribution and Scholarship in the Performing Arts.’
The award is India’s highest honour for performing artistes under the age of 40. Shilpa is the first person from Kodagu and the first Kodavathi to receive the coveted recognition.
Candidates are nominated by eminent artistes and previous SNA awardees and are evaluated on the strength of their body of work and contributions to the performing arts.
In the ‘Overall Contribution and Scholarship’ category, artistes are expected to demonstrate not only excellence in performance but also significant contributions through research, teaching, curation and allied activities.
In Shilpa’s case, the award recognises more than a decade of work in documenting, preserving and promoting Kodava culture and heritage through academic research, alongside a distinguished performing career spanning nearly three decades.
She was awarded the prestigious two-year Fellowship for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) for 2019-2021. Her topic was ‘Adaptation of Kodava language/literary compositions into the classical format and Bharatanatyam’.
Shilpa Nanjappa is the daughter of Allaranda Uthappa and Kaveriamma couple. She is married to Mukkatira Pavan Nanjappa.
Stamp of approval for Kodava culture
Born in Bengaluru and at present settled in Kodagu after her marriage, Shilpa Nanjappa is also an ‘A’ grade artiste of Doordarshan. Speaking to Star of Mysore, Shilpa said that being nominated itself was a significant honour because nominations come from senior members of the fraternity.
“When members of the dance community hold me in such high regard, that recognition alone feels significant. For the first time in my life, an award is not about me; it is about the work, the community and a stamp of approval for Kodava culture and heritage,” she said.
“I have dedicated more than a decade to propagating and preserving this tradition. I hope this recognition helps the Kodava language reach places it has never reached before. This award is a huge acknowledgement for micro-culture representation in larger cultural spaces and is integral to the survival of micro-cultures,” she said.

A one-day branding and marketing awareness programme was held in Kushalnagar in Kodagu district on 10 August 2026 for around 150 tailor beneficiaries registered under the PM Vishwakarma scheme. The programme covered Artificial Intelligence tools, digital marketing, e-commerce onboarding, QR code generation, and registration on the Udyam Portal.
PM Vishwakarma Scheme
The PM Vishwakarma scheme is a Central Sector scheme of the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. It covers 18 traditional trades, including tailor, carpenter, blacksmith, goldsmith, potter, sculptor, and basket maker.
MSME-DFO and district-level outreach
The Branch MSME Development and Facilitation Office, Mangaluru, organised the programme in association with the Kushalnagar Taluk Tailors’ Association. Sundar Sherigar, Assistant Director and Head of Office at the Branch MSME-DFO Mangaluru, presided over the session.
PMEGP and Udyam Portal
Hanumatharaya, Joint Director of the District Industries Centre, Madikeri, briefed participants on the features, eligibility, and financial assistance application process under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme. The Udyam Portal is the Government of India’s online registration system for micro, small and medium enterprises.

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises administers several enterprise support schemes for artisans and micro-enterprises in India.
PMEGP stands for Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme.
QR code-based payments are part of India’s digital commerce ecosystem under the Unified Payments Interface and other payment systems.
Artificial Intelligence tools are increasingly used in digital marketing, customer outreach, and product listing on e-commerce platforms.

The event involved the Kushalnagar Taluk Tailors’ Association and the Kodagu District Tailors Association. Suman S. Raju, Assistant Director and programme coordinator, explained the execution stages and benefits of the PM Vishwakarma scheme.

Sangeetha Sambhrama will feature a book, album and website launch, followed by a concert of Madikeri Nagendra’s original compositions.
Madikeri Nagendra’s sonorous voice and unique compositions have a special place in Kannada’s Sugama Sangeetha or journey of musical expression. An event titled, Sangeetha Sambhrama, will be a reminder of a bygone era of music that once played a major role in Karnataka’s musical milieu.
The event commemorates Nagendra’s 75th birth anniversary and has been organised by his son, Bharath Nagendra. Born on September 16, 1950, to a culturally vibrant family, Nagendra’s early exposure to classical music, saw him become a household name and a contemporary of Rathnamala Prakash, Malathi Sharma, Shimoga Subbanna.
According to the Bengaluru-based Bharath, the event will bring together musicians, scholars and connoisseurs of music. The evening will begin with the launch of Madikeri Nagendra – Yashogaathe, a book that chronicles the artiste’s journey. This will be followed by the release of an audio album Geethavenna Jeevana, a compilation of 11 original compositions by Nagendra, orchestrated by Praveen D Rao.
Saanidhya, a website documenting the curated knowledge of Sugama Sangeetha, will also be launched on the occasion. Live music will be presented by vocalists Supriya Raghunandan, Meghana Bhat, Srilakshmi Belmannu, Keerthan Holla, Nishchay Vishwasena and Bhargav HC, as part of the celebrations.
Bharath says Saanidhya is an initiative to create a living archive for the next generation. “There is a dearth of information about Sugama Sangeetha on the internet. In the past, singers kept this form alive by singing compositions of writers such as Kuvempu and Da Ra Bendre. Yashwanth Halebandi, for instance, was known for singing Bendre’s songs. This website is an effort to keep this art form from disappearing.”.

To mark International Women’s Day celebrations, Daksha College, Mysuru, recently felicitated Padma Shri Awardee Rani Machaiah, who is an exponent of the Ummathat (traditional dance of Kodagu) and T.K. Smitha, a climate journalist and TEDX speaker, for their valuable contribution to the society.
Speaking on the occasion, Jayachandra Raju, Chairman of Daksha College, said women are the life and embodiment of mother earth and humanity that sustains life.
He assured of all possible support to women teachers and students who can volunteer and come up with practically possible activities and processes that can save water, prevent wastage of food, create livelihoods for women in distress and maintain our surroundings clean and green.
Rani Machaiah called upon the students to give out their best, respect elders and take care of the parents who have selflessly strived to give the best the education to their children thus enabling their growth and development.
Smitha and Sonia Umapathy, Secretary of Global Education Trust, motivated women to become independent and pursue their dreams without any inhibitions.

Fabriano in Acquarello is the international artistic convention dedicated to water color painting. International Exhibition FabrianoIn Acquarello will be organized with the participation of InArte – International Watercolour Sociaty, Italy and in cooperation Municipality Fabriano, Fondazione Carifac, Fondazione Fedrigoni Istocarta, Rotary and Lions club from 23rd to 26th April 2015 with the participation of the most important watercolor communities from around the world that will allow Italian and foreign watercolorist demonstrate, share and discuss their work in a unique context.
Water Color Society of India, founded by Amit Kapoor in 2013 at New Delhi, a part of International Water Color Society functioning with the aim to promote and popularize water color/water media in every country and to bring the hidden Indian talent at International platform. The society has identified the water color painting of Shri Aimanda Rupesh Nanaiah, resident of Maragodu Village of Kodagu district. Aimada Rupesh Nanaiah is one among the 20 artists representing India for the Fabriano in Acquarello 2015 exhibition at Italy scheduled for April-May 2015. Shri Aimanda Rupesh Nanaiah was born on November 19, 1976. He did his Primary Education at St. Anne’s Convent, Siddapur and Secondary at Siddapur High School, Pre-University at Murnad Pre-university and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Applied arts 1995-2000 at CAVA Mysore.
A Special Cover was released to felicitate water colour painting of Shri Aimanda Rupesh Nanaiah selected for Fabriano in Acquerello 2015 on 14th February 2015 at Madikeri (Special Cover approval no. KTK/28/2015). The cover illustration depicts the water color painting selected for the exhibition with the title “Pathukutti-The Fish Seller”, and scenes of paddy transplantation, Madikeri Town, and other village scenes of Kodagu. The reverse of the cover also features paintings of tractor alongside paddy field and a Kodagu township. The cover was released by Senior Post Master, Madikeri. The cover was received b the Artist Shri Rupesh Nanaiah who and whose family were felicitated on the occasion. The event was held at the Madikeri Head Post Office Premises. The artist also gave a demonstration of sketching by sketching the post masters caricature. My stamp depicting the painting was also launched on the occasion.

Special Cover on Kodagina Gowramma – 14th February 2015.
Mrs. B. T. Gopal Krishna (b. 1912 – d. 1939), better known as Kodagina Gowramma, was an Indian writer who wrote in Kannada and lived in Kodagu. She was also a feminist and a supporter of the Indian Freedom Movement. Gowramma was born in 1912 and married to Mr. B. T. Gopal Krishna of Gundugutti village of Somwarpet taluk in Kodagu, then known as Coorg, a province in British India. She invited Mahatma Gandhi to her family house, during his campaign in Coorg, and donated all her gold ornaments towards the Harijan (Dalit) Welfare Fund. She died young, drowning in a whirlpool, at the age of 27, on April 13, 1939.
Gowramma wrote in Kannada and on the feminist ideology using the pen name ‘Kodagina Gowramma’. The stories that she wrote, such as “Aparaadhi Yaaru” (Who is the criminal), “Vaaniya Samasye”, “Aahuthi” and “Manuvina Raani”, were modern and progressive.
On the occasion of 10th District Kannada Sahithya Sammelana, a Special cover was released on Kodagina Gowramma on 14th February 2015 at Madikeri. (Special Cover approval no. KTK/27/2015). The Special Cover depicts the portrait of Gowramma, and photos of her two important books in Kannada “Kambani” and “Chiguru” and the special cancellation depicts the map of Karnataka and the Karnataka mate with 10th District Kannada Sahithya Sammelana in a circle.
