District hospital in Madikeri to be upgraded, says Patil

Medical Education Minister Dr Sharanaprakash R Patil assured of upgrading the district hospital in Madikeri by increasing the number of beds from 410 to 650.

He paid a sudden visit to the district hospital in town on Thursday. Speaking to mediapersons later, he said that the hospital lacked space for an upgrade.

“Land will be needed for construction of the new medical college, but there is a need to upgrade the hospital as well. Compared to last year’s condition, the hospital has improved a lot,” he said.

Dr Patil inspected the facilities at the dialysis, X-Ray, women’s surgery ward, emergency unit and other wards and directed the hospital staff to clear the hospital of unwanted materials.

Now, Solar power to pump water for wild animals at Nagarahole

Nagarahole first in the State to implement the project on experimental basis

PCCF B.J. Hosmath to inaugurate the project tomorrow

PumpWaterKF10may2016

Mysuru :

With water bodies drying up due to lack of rains in almost all forests in the State and also because of scorching heat, the Forest Department has now turned towards solar energy to pump water to water bodies on an experimental basis at Nagarahole Reserve Forest, the first in the State to do so.

The project of pumping water to water bodies by utilising solar power will be inaugurated on Sunday (May 8) by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) B.J. Hosmath.

The Tiger Tank at Antharasanthe Zone in Nagarahole Reserve Forest, which used to cater to the needs of the wild animals, got dried up about three months ago and the animals were forced to go in search of water.

RFO Mahesh, who observed the animals moving in search of water, began to fill the water bodies using tankers, but it was not enough to cater to their needs. Hence, a borewell was sunk about 100 mts away from the Tiger Tank and a submersible pump was installed to pump water to the tank. Now, to supply power to the water pump, solar panels with 5100 watts capacity have been installed about 20 ft. above the ground and solar energy is being tapped to supply power to the pump.

A pipe is placed to pump water from the borewell to the tank, which is about 100 mts. away, and three litres of water is being pumped per second into the tank. The water pump will pump water for 6 to 8 hours a day with a total of 60,000 to 80,000 litres being pumped into the tank every day.

The solar panel is installed at a cost of Rs. 9 lakh and the cost was borne by wildlife enthusiast Tiger Ramesh, who had earlier donated CCTV Cameras to Bandipur and Nagarahole.

The Tiger Tank was drying up fast and we used to fill water to the tank using water tankers since three months. For the first time in the State, solar energy is being utilised in the forest to pump water to fulfill the water needs of wild animals. If this experiment succeeds, the same will be implemented in other places where there is scarcity of water.

Bean there, drone that… Coffee planters for an eye-in-the-sky to assess crop health

CoffeeKF06feb2016

Coffee plantation owners keen to use drones to assess crop health

Mumbai:

Enabled by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), drones are leading agricultural data collection and facilitating precision analysis in agriculture globally, helping to improve crop yield.

Though the use of drones by civilians is as yet restricted in India, speakers at a recent coffee seminar urged the government to allow these hi-tech machines to help detect the health of the crop.

Apart from their military use, millions of farmers across the country could use drones and the new emerging technology to boost production and efficiency in their farms.

“We are on the cusp of a new era of farming, where precision agriculture practices can offer a new approach to crop management. We now have a technique that wrings out waste and uses data to maximise crop yields and profits. UAV technology is reshaping farming,” said Jaisimha Rao, coffee plantation owner and entrepreneur.

Game changer

Passionate about technology and agriculture, Rao noticed the lack of data-driven decision making while working on his family’s coffee plantation. He decided to combine the versatility of UAVs and computers, and ensure algorithms to analyse crops. Aiming to bridge the gap, Rao, who holds a Bachelors degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Carnegie Mellon University, founded TartanSense. The company uses UAVs to capture and analyse aerial imagery.

Blanket restrictions

“Flying drones and gathering data is a game changer for agriculture, and especially for large plantations like coffee. How we can use this technology in India is the moot point, since the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has restricted the use of drones,” he said.

Pointing out that the “blanket restriction by the DGCA to operate drones would kill the enthusiasm of start-ups” such as his, Rao said his drones had worked in Indonesia, Japan as well as in the US, with drones costing upwards of $100,000.

Speaking about the new technology, Sanjiv Sarin, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Coffee, who was moderating the talk, said, “We are entering the future of the coffee industry. The Coffee Board can work for government clearances to use drones in agriculture.”

Though coffee is shade-grown among silver oak trees, Rao said, “drones will soon be able to look at a tree and avoid it. Over the next 6-12 months, we are going to have an UAV that can fly under the canopy, measure each and every coffee bush and get data for the planter. Canopy penetration will be the true essence of precision farming.”

Big data

Agricultural drones are UAVs used for precision agriculture, which is a modern method of farming globally that uses big data, aerial imagery and other means to optimise efficiency.

The drone collects the crop’s image and makes a colour coded map based on its health, which is then assessed by the UAV firm.

Drones are helping assess the exact nature and area of crop damage during natural calamities, and are helping save huge amounts.

Stating that a lot of people are fascinated by drones, Rao said the real value add “is not the hardware, which is about how to fly them and get the data, but to analyse it and benefit the farmer.”

Detailing the functioning of the UAV, Rao said, “Our drone flies for about 20 minutes, and then the battery is dead. It can survey about 150 acres. We send the images up to the cloud, and can then stitch the data into a nice map. Once you get the image and sensor data in a map, one can get an actionable report and help the farmer. This is where the real skill lies.”

BSNL to improve 3G network in Mysuru, Kodagu

Public sector undertaking BSNL is poised for to strengthen and expand its 3G coverage in the Mysuru-Kodagu region.

The plan is to strengthen the 3G data network in the district headquarters by adding new 3G nodes, providing 3G at all the existing towers in all the taluks and providing 3G nodes to all important hoblis, villages, tourist places, industrial areas and educational institutions.

This was communicated by BSNL Chief Manager P. Nagaraju to Pratap Simha, MP, consequent to his query on BSNL’s plans for improving 3G coverage in the region.

BSNL said that they would start receiving the equipment by December 2015 and complete the installation by December 2016. Of the proposed 95 3G sites in the region, as many as 85 sites are in Kodagu district while Mysuru which already has a good network and infrastructure and is served by 3G, will get only 10 new sites.

Out of 85 3G sites in Kodagu district , 20 sites will be in Madikeri taluk, 30 in Somwarpet taluk, and 35 sites will be located in Virajpet taluk. In Mysuru district, 3 sites will be located in Hunsur taluk, 1 in K.R.Nagar and 6 sites in Mysuru taluk.

However, the request for strengthening and expanding the 2G sites has not been approved by the BSNL Corporate office as emphasis is on strengthening the 3G coverage, according to the communique.

Welcoming the decision, Mr.Pratap Simha said the identification of new 3G sites by the BSNL indicates that a majority of them are in far-flung areas of the hilly or remote areas of Kodagu which augurs well for the development of the region.
