Muscat:
Defending champions Team Coorg Oman is all set to participate in the Gulf Cup Hockey Championship 2013, organised by the United Thalassery Sports Club (UTSC), due to be held in Dubai next month.

Team Coorg won the crown during the second edition last year and was also a finalist in the inaugural edition in 2011.

Team Coorg has been working hard to improve its players’ fitness and skills in the face of the vastly improved opposition, who have had a lot of exposure to Club-level tournaments in Dubai over the last few seasons. Team Coorg, however, will enter the tournament without much match practice, but they are confident of taking on the might of the other expatriate teams.

Scheduled for March 1 at the Dubai Sports City Turf, Team Coorg Oman will field a team of players of mixed ages since a few of its original members have left Muscat, while a few others are nursing injuries; some of the newly married guys have succumbed to the temptation of good food, and the ongoing exams keep the schoolboys indoors, further limiting the team’s options.

A few newcomers will strengthen the aging team, and a lot will be expected of the few players who have improved their skills over the last year.

Team Coorg’s popularity can be gauged by the increasing support it receives from all quarters.

Hugely popular
Many supporters will travel with the team from Oman, and many more in Dubai are eagerly looking forward to joining them at the venue.

Team Coorg has picked up the thread from back home and has endeavoured, over the years, to keep alive the esprit de corps of sports, its customs, and its traditions.

A total of 10 teams, including one Pakistani team, are participating in this edition of the championship. The chief guest of the tournament is Mustafa Zafeer, the patron of UTSC.

Colin Fleming wins Marseille title with Rohan Bopanna

Britain’s Colin Fleming claimed his second ATP doubles title of the year as he teamed up with Rohan Bopanna of India to win the Open 13 in Marseille.
The pair beat Pakistan’s Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer, the top seeds, 6-4 7-6 (7-3).

Fleming joined forces with Bopanna in the absence of regular partner Ross Hutchins, who is recovering after being diagnosed with cancer in December.
The Scot, 28, has now won seven ATP doubles titles, three with Hutchins.
“It’s a great day for us,” said Fleming. “We beat one of the best teams in the world. They played the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals last year and I’m sure they’ll end up there again this year.”

Bopanna added: “It’s always tough to play against friends. Then, I also want to thank my partner. He wasn’t feeling well this morning but he came out and played a great match.”

Fleming began the year playing alongside Jamie Murray in Brisbane and then won in Auckland with Brazil’s Bruno Soares, before a disappointing first-round exit with Murray at the Australian Open.

A burgeoning partnership with Wimbledon doubles champion Jonny Marray was then interrupted when the Englishman suffered a calf injury in Rotterdam earlier this month.

The singles title in Marseille went to Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat Czech top seed Tomas Berdych 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4.

Chikkarangappa looking to gain experience in the pro world

S Chikkarangappa may not have set the course on fire on his professional debut as he used to do in his hugely successful amateur career but the talented youngster said he is looking at gaining nothing more than experience on his maiden season with the top guns.

Chikkarangappa, who made the professional grade after signing off tied ninth with a total of five-over 293 in the PGTI Final Stage Q-School at Royal Calcutta Golf Club last December, shot two-over 74 in the opening round of the Gujarat Kensville Challenge at the Kensville Golf and Country Club in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

“It’s not the best start to my pro career, but I’ll take it,” the talented 19-year-old told Deccan Herald. “The hitting was very bad today and I kept hitting it in places where I’m not supposed to. Things like that happen. After the round, I went to the driving range and sorted it out. I’m confident of putting up a good show tomorrow and making the cut,” added Chikkarangappa after shooting three bogeys against a lone birdie.

Hailing from a humble background, Chikkarangappa made heads turn with some splendid show in the junior and amateur circuit but said he has not set any major targets this year. “The only target I’ve set for myself is to do well and retain the card. I’m using my maiden season just as a learning experience.

“The intention is to play all the tournaments on the Indian tour and a few co-sanctioned Asian Tour events. If I get a chance to play on the Asian Tour, I’ll grab that as well. More the better. It’s all about becoming a better golfer this year.”

Last year Chikkarangappa was overshadowed by his friend and City-mate Khalin Joshi, who won the IGU Amateur Order of Merit before scoring a six-shot win in the Final Q-School and narrowly missing the bus on the Asian Tour. On Thursday, Khalin showed his improvement with a level-par 72 round that left him at tied 29th.

Asked whether he was looking at extending his amateur rivalry to the pro world, Chikkarangappa felt it was a whole different ball game on the pro circuit. “Khalin and I have played a lot of junior and amateur events together and we’ve enjoyed our battles. However, the pro circuit is way different.

“The quality and competition is much higher. We are battling with a much bigger field. However, having played a lot of amateur events locally and internationally, it gives us a good head start. We’ve also played in a few pro events and know what it takes to battle it out with the big boys. We are excited about the challenge ahead.”

HIL will help in reviving Indian hockey, feel former players

New Delhi :
Former hockey players feel that the much-awaited Hockey India League will help in reviving the dwindling fortunes of the game in the country.

“After a long time such an opportunity has come. Technical exchange of knowledge and skills between players and coaches would help improve the status of the game in the country,” former India captain and Olympian Pargat Singh said.

Olympian Mohammed Shahid believes that it would be a treat to watch the best talents from across the world in the league.

“I am excited to see such good players in one league. Many people would come to watch these greats,” Shahid said.

Pargat and Shahid along with former goalkeeper Mir Ranjan Negi, drag-flicker Jugraj Singh and forward Deepak Thakur would form the Hindi commentary panel for Star Sports.

The English commentary team comprises of former captain Viren Rasquinha, former women’s team coach Sandeep Somesh and goalkeepers Cedric D’Souza and AB Subbaiah.

Cedric feels that the league would give Indian hockey the impetus it requires to regain its past glory.

“This will give a launch pad to popularise the sport in the country again. We have the heart and skill to play the game but this tournament will also bring in tactics which will take our game further ahead,” he said.

Also, Star Sports have roped in former India cricketer and MP Navjot Singh Sidhu to be their brand ambassador for the league.

Despite the ongoing controversy over the participation of Pakistani players in league, Sidhu feels sports should not be mixed with politics.

“I feel a sportsperson joins people. He does the work of bridging gaps,” he said while whatever is apt should be done at the diplomatic level to decide whether Pakistani players should be part of this league or not.

The inaugural HIL will be held across five cities of the country from January 14 to February 10.

“I love Hyderabad. It gave me so much in life and in sport. And, it was a pleasure to train with Arif Sir (Dronacharya S.M. Arif). I always look forward to train under him,” the champion shuttler said.

“There is no animosity with anyone. I am grateful for all the support I got in the city and the reason for shifting base to Benguluru is I prefer to be with my parents,” she pointed out. Asked if Jwala taking a six-month break from badminton after the 2012 London Olympics could have been a reason, the doubles shuttler replied in the negative.
