Robin Uthappa bags Tendulkar’s spot in T20 squad against South Africa

New Delhi:
Robin Uthappa was on Wednesday named in place of Sachin Tendulkar in India’s squad for the one-off Twenty20 international in Johannesburg on March 30 to commemorate the 150 years of settlement of Indians in that country.

Tendulkar, who no longer plays in T20 internationals, was expectedly left out of the 15-member Indian squad which has all the other players in the team for the Asia Cup starting in Bangladesh on Sunday.

Young Delhi batsman Virat Kohli, who was made vice-captain of the ODI team for the Asia Cup, will also be the deputy to Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the one-off T20 Internationals, a BCCI release issued by its secretary Sanjay Jagdale said.

The one-off T20 international in South Africa at the Wanderers ground will be held after the March 11-22 Asia Cup and precede the Indian Premier League T20 competition commencing on April 4.

Birthday boy Rohan Bopanna seals Doubles Dubai title with Mahesh Bhupathi

Double treat: New doubles pair Bhupathi (left) and Bopanna celebrate their Dubai win.
Rohan Bopanna said it was the perfect birthday gift as the 31-year-old celebrated winning his first doubles title with new partner, Mahesh Bhupathi, in Dubai, on Saturday night.

The Indian duo overcame Mariusz Fyrstenburg and Marcin Matkowski of Poland 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 in 69 minutes to lift their first trophy together as a team.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better gift,” said Bopanna. “It’s my first ATP 500 title. “Of course as a team it is a first, but even – otherwise I won a 250, won a Masters Series, but never a 500. This is great, and obviously it’s great to play with Mahesh. All that 17 years of experience on court I think really helps in those close matches and these big moments.

“He’s helped me so much throughout my career coming up from Futures, always kept in touch with me and helped me whenever possible, which is great. It’s a good opportunity for me to play with him, alongside with him. Couldn’t have asked for anything better than winning this title.”

Bhupathi said: “20 years ago I played my first professional match here in Dubai, so it’s a very special place for me. The crowd is amazing. It’s even better than playing at home, because the stadium here is bigger than Chennai.”

The new pairing have their sights set on the Olympics, but with three players – Bhupathi, Leander Paes and Bopanna – it’s going to be difficult finding out who will play mixed doubles with Sania Mirza at the Games.

“We’re all thinking about that,” laughed the pair. Bhupathi said: There are three of us thinking about it. We don’t know what she’s thinking. Maybe we can play one match each (laughs).”

Dubai:
The experience of Mahesh Bhupathi helped hand new teammate Rohan Bopanna a perfect birthday gift as the Indian duo powered their way to a 6-4, 3-6 1-0 (5) upset win over third seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the Dubai Duty Free Men’s Open doubles final here yesterday.
Bopanna, who celebrates his 32nd birthday today, was thrilled at making an entry into the big league with their first ATP World Tour title.
“I have never won an ATP 500 doubles, so this is going to be a special one for me,” Bopanna said.
The Indians started off well with a break on Fyrstenberg’s serve in the seventh game, which just enough to hand them the first set 6-4 in a little over half an hour.

“This is our first final together and definitely we were a little jittery out there,” Bhupathi admitted.
“But I think we played the big points well and that made the difference,” the 37-year-old added.

In the second set, the Polish pair got stronger, especially Matkowski, with some great first serves to dominate the Indians, and a break on Bopanna’s serve in the second game handed them the set 6-3 and pushed the encounter into the deciding super match tie-break

The Indians were off to the best of starts in the tie-break as they raced into an early 5-1 lead, which they ultimately went on to win 10-5 and claim their first-ever doubles title after coming together only this season.
Strong favourites
Going in as strong favourites on the merit of being the third seeds, Frystenberg and Matkowski were playing in their 32nd ATP World Tour doubles final, while it was a maiden appearance for Bhupathi and Bopanna.
Bhupathi is the only player from the two pairs who has won the doubles in Dubai, though with different partners — in 1998 with Leander Paes, in 2004 with Fabrice Santoro and in 2008 with Mark Knowles.

Jwala and Ashwini confident

OPTIMISTIC: Gutta Jwala (left) and Ashwini Ponnappa, who will set out on a three-event sojourn in Europe, with Dronacharya awardee S.M. Arif in Hyderabad. Photo: V.V. Subrahmanyam
Badminton’s China Wall may seem well-nigh impossible to breach. But the Indian women’s doubles players — Gutta Jwala and Ashwini Ponnappa — have been chipping away at the formidable fortification.

“Over the years, we have been getting better against the Chinese,” avers Ashwini. That may not be just a tall claim, going by a cursory look at their recent matches.

In the Uber Cup, they lost to Qing Tian and Yunlei Zhao. Before succumbing 10-21 in the decider, Jwala and Ashwini had stretched their Chinese counterparts 19-21 in the opening set. The opponents they ran close are currently World no. 2!

Against the World no. 1 pair of Xiaoli Wang and Yang Yu, the Indians acquitted themselves honourably at the Victor Korea Open, Seoul last month. If the latter lost the first set tamely at 10-21, in the second they got pretty close to equalising with 17-21.

In the subsequent Maybank Malaysia Open, Jwala and Ashwini bowed out in the first round itself. Only that they were vanquished 13-21, 21-15, 17-21 by Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl, who eventually went on to claim the crown. India’s top doubles duo even wrested a set from the Danish pair, currently rated World No. 7.

“Their game’s very strong and capable of standing up to the world’s top players too,” says their mentor, Padma Shri S.M. Arif. Quick to rationalise, he adds, “Their 2011 World championships bronze medal-win proves this.”

LOW ON LUCK

Of their early exits of late, the Dronacharya awardee feels they’ve been low on luck. “Meeting top-ten pairs in the initial rounds itself, even before they are familiar with the flight of the ‘bird’ or wind draughts in the arena, are why they bow out early,” he explains.

“Much depends on the draws they get. If they advance into the competition and get into the groove, they can beat the best,” he adds assuredly.

Seeing falling snow flakes for the first time in Korea, Ashwini had been fascinated. The world No.19 pair has, however, to contend with not just cold climes but some hot competition too as they set out on a three-event sojourn.

A mere two-day gap separates each tournament in their itinerary, starting with the German Open at Mulheim an der Ruhr from Tuesday, followed by the All England championships at Birmingham, the last leg taking them to Basel for the Swiss Open.

STICK TO BASICS

“We’ll stick to basics, not try any extra, new stuff for the big matches. Nor will we think too much and pile on unnecessary pressure,” said seasoned campaigner Jwala, whose never-say-die attitude was evident on the eve of their departure.

Robin Uthappa Lead Bangalore To A Win In K.S. Subbiah Pillai Trophy

Bangalore:
Bangalore riding on fine century by the skipper Robin Uthappa thrashed Hyderabad by 103 runs in the K.S. Subbiah Pillai Trophy played here at the Jain Residential School Ground, on Friday.

Uthappa who scored a 99-ball 120 which included 11 boundaries and five massive sixes helped his side to post a mammoth 343 in their stipulated 50 overs. The huge win earned them a bonus points and now have 13 points to their credit whereas Hyderabad stayed a point behind. (116b, 11×4, 2×6) went in vain. The 103-run victory gifted a bonus point and boosted Karnataka’s tally to 13 while Hyderabad stayed at 12.

Losing the toss and put in to bat first, Bangalore openers started off on a cautious note and piled 58 runs for the first wicket. After Mayank was out for 29, it was Ganesh Satish and helped out his captain in his onslaught. It was however sad for Ganesh to miss out a century as he was out for 90.
After Satish’s wicket the middle order came in chipped with useful cameos.

Later, Ronit More wrecked havoc and scalped five Hyderabadi wickets to upset their run chase. Bangalore received some resistance from Ravi Teja who scored 110, but it went in vain.

Meanwhile in other matches, Tamil Nadu defeated Kerala by 61 runs and Andhra picked up a four-wicket victory over Goa.

The scores: Karnataka 343 for seven in 50 overs (Robin Uthappa 120, Ganesh Satish 90) bt Hyderabad 240 in 44 overs (Ravi Teja 110, B. Sandeep 38, Ronit More 5 for 31).

Tamil Nadu 284 for eight in 50 overs (Anirudha Srikkanth 82, Arun Karthik 56, P. Prashanth 3 for 54) bt Kerala 223 in 48.3 overs (Robert Fernandez 86, V.A. Jagadesh 32, R. Jesuraj 4 for 29, C. Ganapathy 4 for 35).

Goa 383 for seven in 50 overs (Rohit Asnodkar 139, Reagan 68,) lost to Andhra 385 for six in 48.4 overs (Y. Venugopala Rao 115 n.o., A.G. Pradeep 104, Ganesh Narvekar 4 for 56).

Army man wins his wings

New Delhi:
When SV Sunil suffered a knee injury that required surgery in early 2010 and kept him out of action the whole year, few would have expected that two years on, he would become one of the keystones that Indian hockey’s Olympic dreams would be built around. Putting both personal and physical pain behind, Sunil has emerged as the most recognised face at the ongoing Olympic qualifiers. The fact that he isn’t flamboyant or outgoing like some of his teammates makes his recognition all the more special.
In every game so far, the 24-year-old Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) with the Indian Army has left the opposition stranded with his speed, stamina and skills. His attacks have been so relentless that sometimes the rest of the Indian team has problems keeping pace. “I know,” smiles Sunil — he hardly ever laughs out loud — “and I have been advised to hang on for just that extra second inside the striking circle to allow others to come up as support. But I have a good understanding with Shivendra Singh and Gurvinder Singh Chandi and they understand that this is my strength. We just try and make sure that I don’t get stranded up front,” he adds.

The Sunil one saw before his comeback in 2011 — he was called up for the preparatory camp in New Delhi, ahead of the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament – was vastly different. “It was a confidence issue,” he admits. “Earlier, I was hesitant to go all out. I always had the speed but thought of being without support upfront, and was not too sure of being able to dodge past the opposition defenders in case I got stuck because of their physical superiority. But now I have been told to just play my natural game.

“The coach has told me not to worry about the opposition or think of getting stuck. Most importantly, he hates back passes, so we are always encouraged to go and attack. That has given me more confidence,” he adds.

Though the Coorgi player admits he was below par against Canada in India’s last game, he is no longer affected by the odd poor performance on field, unlike earlier when he used to think too much of his game.

Having lost his father, a furniture carver, during the 2009 Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia – where India won gold after 12 years – Sunil is now the sole bread-earner of his family that includes his stepmother and three younger siblings. And he admits he has changed in his approach to both the game and life since then.

“Responsibility ke saath maturity aa jati hai, bachpana khatm ho gaya hai (with responsibility comes maturity, the childishness is gone),” he smiles. “ Earlier I used to play hockey because I liked it and it helped me get a job. There was a time (in 2010) when I thought my career was over. It was very bad year – I had missed three big competitions — the World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games — two of them at home. But then I realised that my family survives on my performance. So now it’s a much more serious thing,” he adds.

With so much responsibility on and off the field, it helps that he has an easygoing roommate in Kannadiga VR Raghunath. “He puts on music that we both enjoy. It helps me relax. I also talk to my family at least once a day to know that they are fine. It keeps me grounded,” he says. The polite smile finally gives way to a gentle laugh when asked about his marriage plans. “Not before my sister. She is in her first year of graduation, a few years from marriage. Only after that,” he says. Till then, he will be happy running circles around the opposition defence.

Indians in comfort zone

While India have booked their place for Sunday’s final, the opponent they play on Sunday will be decided by the results of the games on Friday. Depending upon the result of the Canada-France match earlier in the day; India’s win, loss, or draw against Poland will throw up a different finalist. “We don’t mind any team in the final,” insisted coach Michael Nobbs after a hectic training session on eve of the game against the team on second position on the table. The focus of the workout was on the goalkeepers. “They haven’t been tested so far in the competition so this was needed,” Nobbs explained. ENS
