Hockey World League Final: AB Subbaiah wants India to play attacking game

AB Subbaiah, former Indian hockey team goalkeeper and coach, isn’t worried with team’s inconsistent showing in the ongoing Hockey World League Final. But he is concerned with their defensive play, which resulted in 2-3 loss to England in their second league match on Saturday.

He wants the young Indian side to play an attacking game from the start to end and suggests it as the only way of getting success against the rivals. “We need to play an attacking hockey till the end. To match-up with world’s top team this is the only formula to adopt,” Subbaiah told HT on Sunday.

“Look at team like Germany, which kept the rivals at bay throughout the match on Saturday, but on the other hand our boys in the match against England looked slow and in defensive mode from the very beginning,” he said, adding, “Indian could wake up only after sustaining two goals in the match. Though they came up with some good hockey by restoring parity, they lost steam thereafter.”

Known for his flawless expertise at tiebreakers during his days in the game Subbaiah admitted that India have good bunch of fit youngsters, who can surprise any team in the world, but they need to maintain pace in the match till the end. “Defensive errors in the match let India sustain all three goals against lower ranked England. We could have won the match easily, had we not committed unforced errors,” he said.

He, however, praised the young goalkeepers Akash Chikte and Suraj Karkera for showing well in absence of regular and experienced custodian PS Sreejesh, who is nursing injury. “These youngsters are quite good under the bar, but need to have experience. The number of young goalkeepers in the national camps should be five at least and should be given match practice and exposure too,” said Subbaiah.

“Only with a big pool of talented goalkeepers, we can pick the best one for a particular match of the event. I don’t find any of these young goalkeepers 60 percent close to the caliber of Sreejesh, but it’s true that in future they may achieve that reputation.”

Advocating for a quick but solid return of a fit-again Sreejesh in the team soon, Subbaiah said that the experienced keeper is the need of the hour for India, especially when they would be playing in the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, World Cup and Olympic qualifiers next year.

“We don’t have any other option, and Sreejesh would be the key players in India’s things of scheme next year, which can change the fortunes of the Indian hockey,” he said. “It’s good to know that Sreejesh has been recovering fast and is 70-80 percent match fit, but he should take the field only when he is fully fit,”

Bopanna: Indian players will benefit from more Challengers

Speaking after an unveiling of his portrait at the KSLTA in honour of his French Open mixed doubles victory, Bopanna said last week’s tournament in Pune and the ongoing one here proved that Indian players can step up if they get to play more Challenger events.

India’s No.1 doubles player Rohan Bopanna believes nothing can prevent Indian players from stepping things up if they have access to more Challenger events. Speaking after an unveiling of his portrait at the KSLTA in honour of his French Open mixed doubles victory, Bopanna said last week’s tournament in Pune and the ongoing one here proved that.

“At Pune there were two Indians in the final and here we are seeing Sumit Nagal and Yuki Bhambri play so well. Yuki has a great chance to be in the top 100 again. So the more Challengers we have in India, the better. If each State can have a Challenger and a Future then definitely we will produce a lot more players.”

Reflecting on his own season during which he won four titles and finished runner-up thrice even while playing with multiple partners, Bopanna said: “The key thing I learned especially with the partner changes was to completely focus on my game and not really worry about who I was partnering…to focus on my strengths and the way I play.”

In spite of forging a successful partnership with Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas, he will pair up with Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin for the upcoming season.

“The challenge that I had with Cuevas this year was that we didn’t really practice much. He played singles so we only played matches. So I decided to find someone who was focused on doubles.”

Bopanna has played before with Roger-Vasselin before – most recently at Wimbledon 2017 – and with a fair amount of success.

“I always like to choose someone who gives me the chance to play my game freely. He doesn’t have any major weapons but he is a solid returner. And he helps me a lot at the net. He gives me the freedom to be aggressive.”

Robin Uthappa’s unselfish contribution in Rohit Sharma’s 264

Robin Uthappa’s unselfish contribution in Rohit Sharma’s 264

uthappaKF18nov2017

November 13 is often remembered for India batsman Rohit Sharma’s magnanimous 264 against Sri Lanka in the 4th ODI of the series at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata in 2014. Rohit’s freakish 264 is widely recognised as among the best ODI knocks by any batsman but very few can recall the huge role played by his partner Robin Uthappa in the death overs.

Uthappa joined Rohit when India’s score were 276-4 after 40.2 overs. The Indian opener had already gone past 150-run mark and in next 58 balls, Rohit managed to accumulate more than 100 runs and created a world record which was far away from the second best at that time.

Playing against a poor bowling Sri Lankan attack, Uthappa had the perfect chance to score fifty or more which could have helped him in cementing his place in the ODI side for the coming World Cup 2015. But it was Uthappa’s inglorious selfless run-a-ball 16 which was the reason behind Rohit posting a colossal score to his name.

The duo added 128 runs in just 58 balls together, with Uthappa’s contribution of mere 12.5% to the partnership. The percentage number definitely looks very small but it was all for the sake of team and batting partner. Out of 16 runs Uthappa scored, 12 were singles, which ensured Rohit stayed on strike for as much as possible.

Further, Uthappa played only 6 more international matches for India — 4 ODIs and 2 T20Is till July 2015. Uthappa has been one of the big player from Karnataka and from 2017-18 season onwards, he has shifted to Saurashtra in domestic crcket.

Karnataka : Third edition of Barefoot Marathon to be held in December

Categories at the marathon include one-mile run, 10 km, 21 km and 42 km
Categories at the marathon include one-mile run, 10 km, 21 km and 42 km

The third edition of the world’s first barefoot marathon will be held at the Tata Coffee Sports Ground at Pollibeta in Kodagu on Dec 10.

Cheppudira Nikki Ponappa, professional golfer, coach and founder of Coorg Wellness Foundation, said the event is being organised with Milind Soman as part of the Coorg Reconnect Initiative by Coorg Wellness Foundation.

Ponappa said, “Barefoot marathon is an initiative through which we want the people of Kodagu as well as anyone who is a nature and wildlife lover to reconnect with mother earth and the best way to do this is by being barefoot. Through this event, we are trying to spread awareness about the rehabilitation of the elephant habitat and we want to replant the 54,000 trees that were chopped from Kodagu for a power grid. So, through the event, we hope to create awareness for planting native fruit trees in an eco-sensitive area like Kodagu. Our wildlife and elephants need to stay in the forest and enjoy their homeland.”

The organisers are expecting about 500 runners to participate from all over the country. “While for the natives of Kodagu, cash prize is awarded, outsiders who win prizes take home produce such as coffee and pepper. We want people to come and experience Kodagu and take back Kodagu with them. The entire event is an eco-friendly event with a ban on plastics. Even water is served in coconut shells. There are no loud speakers nor do we use electricity. The warm up begins with the folk music known as the ‘Vallaga’ and people will have to warm up by dancing the traditional Kodava dance,” Ponappa said.

Ponappa said the categories include one-mile run, 10 km, 21 km and 42 km.

Twin titles for Ponappa, Attri-Reddy shock top seeds

Nagpur :

Ashwini Ponappa switched partners recently. N Sikki Reddy and R Satwik Sai Raj are her new partners in women’s and mixed doubles respectively. However, it has hardly made a difference to her performance as she won the twin titles, for the first time, in Senior Badminton Nationals on Wednesday.

Combining with Sai Raj, she recorded a fighting victory over World No. 16 Pranav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy 21-9, 20-22, 21-17 in the mixed doubles final. Later, with Reddy, she comprehensively defeated Maharashtra pair of Prajakta Sawant and Sanyogita Ghorpade 21-14, 21-14 to complete the double.

In the men’s double final, which turned out to be a marathon affair, Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy shocked top seeds and world No. 28 Satwik Sai Raj and Chirag Shetty 15-21, 22-20, 25-23. The title clash lasted for sixty four minutes.

The second seed pair of Satwik Sai Raj and Ponappa looked in great form in the first game of the mixed doubles final. They finished the opening game in no time. The pair showed brilliant coordination against the top seed pair of Chopra and Reddy. Nothing went right for the top seeds as they were left clueless and lost the one-sided first game.

Chopra and Reddy played much better in the second game and took initial lead before Satwik and Ponnappa caught them up. Chopra and Reddy took a crucial four-point lead towards the end but Satwik and Ponappa kept coming back to make it 20-20. However, Chopra rose to the occasion and finished off the game to level the match.

The third game saw an intense battle till the interval. However, after changing sides, Satwik and Ponappa kept chipping in with important points and maintained the lead throughout. Chopra-Reddy pair reduced the lead but never got ahead. From 15-14, the second seed pair got four successive points and soon finished the game.

The women’s doubles final, however, turned out to be a damp squib. Ghorpade-Sawant pair started off well in both games but conceded the lead at the halfway mark. Ponappa-Reddy pair was hardly given the fight. While Ponappa was oozing with confidence with her title victory in mixed doubles, Reddy was hurt. It worked for both of them as they knocked off the Maharashtra pair challenge in just 27 minutes.

The men’s doubles final, however, went right down to the wire and kept the spectators on the edge of their seats. The second seed pair of Attri and Sumeeth Reddy showed great character whenever they were pushed back to the wall. After losing the first game, they were down 17-20 and it looked all over for them. However, they showed great fight and scored five successive points to level the final.

They had a chance to finish off the game quickly in the third game with a six point lead towards the end. However, Satwik and Shetty showed why they were given the top billing. They played aggressively to level the scores. The pair were on championship point in the third game as well but messed it up. Even after the deuce, they had an opportunity to win the title for the third time but couldn’t do it.

It was Manu and Reddy’s day. They won a close last game. An animated Reddy raced across the court to celebrate the hard-fought victory.

New Delhi :

In a memorable day for Indian tennis, Rohan Bopanna won the Erste Bank Open title in Vienna with Pablo Cuevas while the team of Saketh Myneni and Vijay Sundar Prashanth clinched the Vietnam Open trophy at the Ho Chi Minh City.

However, Divij Sharan and his partner Scott Clayton ended runners-up at the Brest Challenger event in France, preventing what could have been an incredible as well as unique culmination to the week for the Indian players on the circuit.

In Vienna, unseeded Bopanna and Cuevas saved two match points before prevailing 7-6(7), 6-7(4), 11-9 over Sam Querrey and Marcelo Demoliner.

Bopanna and Cuevas were down 7-9 in the deciding super tie-breaker but saved both the match points to win the title.

It was third title of the season for Bopanna, having won Chennai Open (with Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan) and Monte Carlo Masters (with Cuevas).

In Vietnam, the unseeded Indian pair of Myneni and Vijay Prashanth quelled the challenge of the Japanese combination of Go Soeda and Ben Mclachlan 7-6(3), 7-6(5) in the summit clash of the $50,000 event.

It was first title of the season for Myneni and maiden Challenger level trophy for Prashanth.

“It was a great week. We combined well and enjoyed ourselves. I still feel I have something left in singles but definitely I will focus on doubles too,” Prashanth said.

Myneni, who has missed most part of the season due to injuries and has slipped to 724 in singles, was also asked if he would shift focus on doubles but he responded with a cryptic reply.

“Still the same plan as before, nothing has changed with me,” he said, indicating that he still have singles in mind.

Divij Sharan and his British partner Scott Clayton ended runners-up at the Brest Challenger following a 4-6, 5-7 defeat against Sander Arends and Antonio Sancic.

After losing the opening set, Sharan and Clayton led the second set 5-3 but lost four games in a row to lose the title clash.

It was second consecutive final for Sharan, having won the European Open (ATP 250 event) with Scott Lipsky last week in Antwerp, Belgium.

A day with pachyderms

EXHILARATING Bathing and feeding sessions are the most popular among the activities at Dubare and Sakrebailu elephant camps. PHOTOS BY AUTHOR
EXHILARATING Bathing and feeding sessions are the most popular among the activities at Dubare and Sakrebailu elephant camps. PHOTOS BY AUTHOR

Everyone loves elephants. Whenever we see them, they bring out the child in us, with a craving to touch, photograph and ride on them, and if possible, take a selfie with them.

Elephants also play an important role in some of our religious festivals. We see the sculptures of elephants in heritage places as well. The best places to get close to these awesome pachyderms are Dubare Elephant Camp in Kodagu and Sakrebailu Elephant Camp in Shivamogga district.

Dubare Elephant Camp

Dubare Elephant Camp is located amidst lush green forest, on the picturesque banks of River Cauvery, about 14 km from Kushalnagar in Kodagu district. This is a project undertaken by the Karnataka Forest Department and Jungle Lodges and Resorts. There are more than 22 elephants in the camp at present. All of them are tamed and trained, but are allowed to roam free in the forest in the afternoon and night. The elephants return to the camp for their bath and feeding sessions. Here, the visitors can not only observe and learn but also participate in various activities involving elephants through the ‘elephant interaction programme’ arranged by the naturalists of the Forest Department.

Driving down from Kushalnagar, we reach the bank of River Cauvery and have to cross over in small motor boats. The view of the river is breathtaking, with the water flowing gently over rocks and bushy trees hanging over the water’s edge on both sides. The chirping of different birds provides a pleasing background music. It is an open, seamless forest area and the only man-made constructions here are for training and feeding the elephants. Trained naturalists explain the various aspects of elephants like their history, biology, personality and food habits. They also facilitate our intimate interaction with the animals. This camp is said to have been started during the British era for taming and training wild elephants to be used for transportation and in war. Some of the trained elephants from this camp participate in the Mysore Dasara procession and other temple festivals.

The most enjoyable part of our visit was joining the mahouts in bathing the elephants. Every morning, the animals are taken down to the river for their bath, which lasts for an hour. It is a pleasure to see them lying down in the river and splashing water, with their trunks, all the while enjoying their bath. Visitors who are bold enough can roll up their sleeves and pants to give the mammoths a scrub. The bath is followed by an elaborate feeding session, in which we could also lend a hand. We can feed them with balls of ragi, jaggery, sugar cane, banana and coconuts provided by the Forest Department.

Elephant rides are arranged thereafter. It is an hour-long journey around the forest and this makes for a memorable experience. If we are lucky, we can catch a sight of animals like peacocks and Sambar deer during the safari.

There are places to stay near the elephant camp. Additionally, the elephant camp also conducts river rafting in the upper part of River Cauvery. In addition, coracle rides are provided for those who wish to ride the river in a different way and enjoy the blissful wilderness along the way. Boat rides and trekking are also possible for bird lovers as the forest is home to a variety of birds, which can often be seen flying across the river.

Sakrebailu Elephant Camp

Sakrebailu Elephant Camp is located about 14 km from Shivamogga town on the Thirthahalli road. This is also run by the Karnataka Forest Department for training wild elephants. Set amidst thick forest on the bank of River Tunga, this ecotourism centre attracts wildlife enthusiasts and tourists in large numbers. Here, also the elephants are taken to the river every morning for their elaborate bathing session.

Visitors are allowed to help in the bathing and feeding sessions. It is a pleasure to watch the giant animals enjoying themselves in the river. After feeding, all the animals are left free to roam in the forest. This an ideal place to enjoy a day out with the elephants.

Elephant rides and trekking are also allowed in this camp. An aane utsava is also held at the camp in the month of October.

Both the camps are open to the public throughout the year. When the waters of River Cauvery become very rough during the time of peak monsoon, the Dubare Elephant Camp closes down the route through the river for the public as it is not safe for people to go across in small boats. However, it can also be reached via road. But for obvious reasons, the bathing sessions are not held during rainy days.

Dubare Elephant Camp is open to the public from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm and 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm on all days. On the other hand, Sakrebailu Elephant Camp is open only in the morning, between 8.30 am and 11.00 am, on all days. September to June is the best time to visit as the elephants love to spend more time in the river when it is not raining and when the weather is humid and hot.

It is suffice to say that Dubare and Sakrebailu are a must visit locales for nature enthusiasts and those who love to have intimate encounters with the elephants.

Robin Uthappa welcomes first child with wife Sheethal Goutham

Robin Uthappa and wife Sheetal welcomed their first child and both announced it on their social media handles.

Robin Uthappa announced the arrival of his first child ‘Neale Nolan Uthappa’ on Wednesday on his official social media account, thanking his fans and followers for all the love and support. Robin also shared the picture of his first kid along with his wife Sheethal Goutham.

In a tweet, Robin, who called their relationship ‘batman and joker’, wrote, “Our bundle of joy has arrived!! NEALE NOLAN UTHAPPA! thank you for all the love and support!! #whentwobecomethree #batmenandjoker.”

The India discard got hitched with long time girlfriend Sheethal, who is a former tennis player, in March last year.

Uthappa, who played for Karntaka for 15 years, made a change of teams when he joined Saurashtra ahead of the 84th season of Ranji Trophy. Uthappa had been one of the key players for Karnataka in the domestic circuit.

Uthappa has also represented India in ODIs and T20Is. On his ODI debut, he scored 86 runs against England before being run out. This was record individual score by an Indian batsman on debut, a record which he kept until fellow Karnataka batsman KL Rahul broke it last year with a century.

Uthappa has been part of Kolkata Knight Riders team in the Indian Premier League. He has won two IPL titles with KKR.
