Somwarpet playgrounds in need of better facilities

SomwarpetKF19aug2016

The taluk is considered as an abode of talented sportspersons. But the lack of facilities has discouraged the growth of budding sports talents.

Somwarpet has produced some of the best sportspersons in state, national and international levels. It still lacks a state-of-the-art playground.

At present, the taluk has two playgrounds — one at the Government Pre-university College and another at Government Higher Primary School.

B P Govind, M P Ganesh, Arjun Halappa, S V Sunil and Vikram Kanth are some of the sportspersons who had their humbe beginnings, practising at these playgrounds. These two playgrounds are in a pathetic state and have become marshy fields.

In summer, children are trained in hockey and cricket at these playgrounds. The playgrounds are not suitable to hold large tournaments. In the past, organisers of various sports tournaments had repaired the ground in their own expenses.

The PU college ground was developed at a cost of Rs 6 lakh 25 years ago. The then Zilla Parishat president J A Karumbaiah and member N M Rajshekhar had laid the foundation stone stone for its construction work.

Despite spending lakh of rupees, the condition of the ground has not improved so far. The playground has an uneven terreain. Also, the pavillion’s construction is unscientific as it does not prevent sun rays properly.

Though turf laying work was taken up two years ago at the playground, the project has remained incomplete. It has added to the existing problems. Organising taluk- or district-level sports tournaments is almost impossible in this condition.

Moreover, there is no water supply to toilets in the stadium. Also, Garbage is being littered all around, creating an unhygienic atmosphere near the gallery. There are no takers for the gymnasium in the playground and equipment worth lakh of rupees are being wasted. Sportsperson Prashant said the playground needs AstroTurf facility. Also, a state-of-the-art gallery is the need of the hour, he added.

The Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports had forwarded a letter to the Public Works Department for identifying a 10-acre land for the construction of a 400-metre track, long ago. But the work has not yet been initiated so far.

India’s Olympic Hope: Hockey vice-captain S V Sunil from Coorg is raring to go

“I want Australia. I want them in the semi-finals and I want to beat them bad.”

SunilKF05aug2016

It’s been 36 years since India won a medal in hockey at the Olympics. As the team heads to Rio, there is a realistic chance and great anticipation this time around that the team could once again stand on the podium, on the back of some impressive results in the last few years. And one man who could prove instrumental in India’s quest for Olympic glory is S V Sunil.

Somwarpet Vittalacharya Sunil was born on May 6, 1989 in Coorg district of Karnataka. In his growing up years, he used a bamboo stick to play the game as he came from a poor background.

He made his international debut at the Asia Cup in Chennai in 2007, a tournament which India won incidentally. He was then part of the silver-winning team at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup the following year. More recently, he was part of two historic triumphs – a bronze at the World Hockey League in 2015 and a silver at the Champions Trophy in 2016.

“Coming from a poor family in Coorg, hockey has given me everything I need to lead a comfortable life. And when I play, I remember what the game has given me for the sacrifices I have made and I will do everything to bring glory for the country,” Sunil said, while speaking to Followyoursport.com.

S V Sunil is regarded as one of the fastest players on the turf today and his blazing runs, mostly down the right flank, have caught the opposition unawares many a time. These incisive inroads have either resulted in direct goals or have created set-piece opportunities for others to score.

With the additional responsibility of vice-captaincy, Sunil is a vital cog in the Indian machine who could tilt fortunes in the team’s favour in crucial match situations.

“I don’t feel that the role of Vice-Captain brings any pressure to my game. Being part of the team for so long, I have learnt to handle pressure and that helps me stick to my natural game. Vice-Captaincy for me, is all about making the youngsters in the team understand their role and motivate them to play to their potential.” Sunil stated.

Sunil is quietly confident about the team doing well at the quadrennial event.

“The approach we have for the Olympics this time is far more systematic and I feel we are on the right track. Last time, we paid more attention to fitness. But this time, it is very different. We pay attention to overall development as a team and the training has a lot to do with discipline and team spirit which I think has helped us on the field and in understanding each other’s strengths and weaknesses.”

Coach Roelant Oltmans is impressed with Sunil’s talent and ability.

“He is an attacker and brings something exceptional to the team. He understands our demands and he keeps questioning what we are doing in a positive way so that he can understand it and translate to the younger players,” Oltmans said.

“I want Australia. I want them in the semi-finals and I want to beat them bad,” said SV Sunil in a recent interview to Sportskeeda, reflecting the team’s eagerness to beat them after they have emerged as the last stumbling block in a series of tournaments lately.

Karnataka’s half dozen squad all set for Force Gurkha RFC India 2016

RallyKF16jul2016

Bangalore :

As Goa gears up for the third edition of Force Gurkha RFC India, Karnataka has broken all records by sending the highest number of entries RFC India has received till date from a single state. This year, a total of six teams from Karnataka will be participating in the country’s toughest and first international off-road motorsport event. Of these, four teams are from Bangalore Off-road Drivers Association (BODA), one team is from Coorg based V5 Offroaders and another is from Mudhogs of Sakleshpur.

The six teams, represented by BODA’s Madhusudan Reddy, Lokesh Aradhya (co-driver Rohith KR), Vivek Kuriakosse (co-driver Ashok Kuriakose) and Pradeep Kumar (co-driver Prithviraj AC), Jagat Nanjappa (co-driver Chetan Chengappa) from V5 Offroaders and Narthan Byramudi (co-driver Satish Kumar) from Mudhogs, aim to overwhelm the rest of the competitors by their talent and team-spirit.

Organized by Delhi-based Cougar Motorsport Pvt. Ltd., Force Gurkha RFC India 2016 will be held in Goa from 22ndJuly to 29th July. It is the India Chapter of the iconic Rainforest Challenge of Malaysia.

The event is divided into four competitive legs – the Prologue, the Predator, the Terminator and the Twilight Zone – which are further segregated into 24 Special Stages. The team with the maximum points at the end of all the Special Stages is announced the winner of the competition and the top Indian driver of the event gets an automatic, free entry to the RFC Mother Event to be held in Malaysia at the end of the year.

This year Kannadigas seem to present the most versatile and flexible representation of the lot.

33 year old Rohith and 45 year old Vivek, both claim that they will be showcasing the most unique vehicle of all. “We are using 40 inch tyres, custom made axle and have made many modifications to give us that extra advantage,” said Vivek.

“We are using a suspension unlike any other, which will give us that power to weight ratio,” Rohith added.

Jagat Nanjappa, a 55 year old rallyist, has been a national champion nine times. He said, “RFC South India was fun but not as tedious as I expected it to be. I am looking forward for the tough and thrilling experience at the RFC India Mother Event in Goa”

“It’s my third time at RFC India, and me and my driver have an experience of both driving as well as navigating, which has given us high hope for a podium finish,” claims Rohith, who also won the ‘Jungleman Award’ in the first season of RFC India.

There are 25 teams in total participating this season, bringing in a range of competition to deal with.

Kodagu battlers ready for action

KodaguBattlersKF16jul2016

If there is one place in Karnataka that has produced top quality hockey players on a consistent basis, it has to be Kodagu. And when it comes to producing Olympians, few regions can match this picturesque district.

Joining the stalwarts likes MP Ganesh, BP Govinda (both 1972 Olympics), AB Subbaiah (1992, 96) and CS Poonacha (1992), Arjun Halappa (2004) who all donned the Indian colours at the quadrennial extravaganza, is the quartet of SV Sunil, Nikkin Thimmaiah, SK Uthappa and VR Raghunath who will form part of India’s charge in Rio.

“I am lucky to have been born in a region that has such rich tradition of hockey,” gushed India’s ace dragflicker Raghunath.

“The tradition dates long back. We have that in our blood. Promoting hockey and joining the Indian Army are the two things that people in Kodagu look up to as they grow up,” he remarked.

While Raghunath believes that it’s the love for the game that has resulted in such a surge of players, the vice-captain of the Rio-bound side, Sunil, credited the way in which Kodagu nurtures the upcoming talent. “I think it has got more to do with the way we nurture talent. We have clubs and loads of teams that play hockey,” said the forward.

“I remember my days. The seniors at the club would come home and drag me to the ground if I didn’t turn up for a practice session.”

Uthappa explains the keen interest that the people back in his hometown take in the game: “Recently when I was back home for two days, the way people spoke — not only the ones I knew, but also strangers — about the Champions Trophy was really touching.

“It not just a compliment, but people would dissect and analyse every move of yours. Things like you should have done this and not that and so on. That shows the interest people have,” he said.

Joining the illustrious list of hockey Olympians from Kodagu for the first time is Thimmaiah. And the 25-year-old is eagerly looking forward to it. “I grew up reading and hearing about Olympics. And here I am preparing for what will be my first Olympics. I want to ensure that I do well and give the best for my team,” stressed the 25-year-old.

While the Kodagu quartet is sure to play a key role in the Indian set up for sometime now, there are worrying signs. The junior national side, that is busy preparing for the Junior World Cup later this year, has no player from Karnataka. Raghunath, though, believes that it’s just a phase.

“Yes, we did have a small break in between, where you had no one coming up in the age-group category. But I see it as a part of a cycle,” he said.

“We have been identifying good players in the U-16 and U-18 level. And I am sure by next year we will have guys in these age-group teams too. But insofar as the Junior World Cup is concerned, the core group looks set and it’s difficult for anyone to break in now,” he reasoned.
