Hockey World League Final: AB Subbaiah wants India to play attacking game

AB Subbaiah, former Indian hockey team goalkeeper and coach, isn’t worried with team’s inconsistent showing in the ongoing Hockey World League Final. But he is concerned with their defensive play, which resulted in 2-3 loss to England in their second league match on Saturday.

He wants the young Indian side to play an attacking game from the start to end and suggests it as the only way of getting success against the rivals. “We need to play an attacking hockey till the end. To match-up with world’s top team this is the only formula to adopt,” Subbaiah told HT on Sunday.

“Look at team like Germany, which kept the rivals at bay throughout the match on Saturday, but on the other hand our boys in the match against England looked slow and in defensive mode from the very beginning,” he said, adding, “Indian could wake up only after sustaining two goals in the match. Though they came up with some good hockey by restoring parity, they lost steam thereafter.”

Known for his flawless expertise at tiebreakers during his days in the game Subbaiah admitted that India have good bunch of fit youngsters, who can surprise any team in the world, but they need to maintain pace in the match till the end. “Defensive errors in the match let India sustain all three goals against lower ranked England. We could have won the match easily, had we not committed unforced errors,” he said.

He, however, praised the young goalkeepers Akash Chikte and Suraj Karkera for showing well in absence of regular and experienced custodian PS Sreejesh, who is nursing injury. “These youngsters are quite good under the bar, but need to have experience. The number of young goalkeepers in the national camps should be five at least and should be given match practice and exposure too,” said Subbaiah.

“Only with a big pool of talented goalkeepers, we can pick the best one for a particular match of the event. I don’t find any of these young goalkeepers 60 percent close to the caliber of Sreejesh, but it’s true that in future they may achieve that reputation.”

Advocating for a quick but solid return of a fit-again Sreejesh in the team soon, Subbaiah said that the experienced keeper is the need of the hour for India, especially when they would be playing in the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, World Cup and Olympic qualifiers next year.

“We don’t have any other option, and Sreejesh would be the key players in India’s things of scheme next year, which can change the fortunes of the Indian hockey,” he said. “It’s good to know that Sreejesh has been recovering fast and is 70-80 percent match fit, but he should take the field only when he is fully fit,”

CNC observes Huthari in traditional fervour

CNC President N U Nachappa and CNC members observed Huthari festival by cutting paddy sheaves in the filed of Uthappa at Chikkabettageri near Kushalnagar on Sunday.
CNC President N U Nachappa and CNC members observed Huthari festival by cutting paddy sheaves in the filed of Uthappa at Chikkabettageri near Kushalnagar on Sunday.

The Codava National Council (CNC) led by its president N U Nachappa celebrated Huthari, the harvest festival of Kodagu, at a paddy field of Nandineravanda Uthappa, in Chikkabettageri village near Kushalnagar in Kodagu on Sunday.

By cutting paddy sheaves in the paddy field of Uthappa, the members celebrated the festival in a traditional manner.

The members offered prayers to the gods and began the Huthari celebrations with ‘Nere Kattuvo’ ritual. The leaves of mango, jackfruit, “Arali”, “Kumbali” and cashew nut trees were used in the ritual.

After the ritual, the participants walked in a procession to paddy fields accompanied by the ‘Dudikottpat’ (Dudi is a small drum of Kodavas).

After firing thrice in the air, the paddy sheaves were cut and brought home in a procession.

The CNC members performed traditional Kolata, Pareya Kali and Chowkata on the occasion. People relished Payasa, “Thambittu,” “Kadubu”, “Pandikari” and other delicacies on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the CNC President urged the government to include Kodava language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.

He said that the government should accord tribal status to Kodavas.

The central government should declare a holiday for Huthari festival.

The CNC is continuing its struggle for an autonomous Kodava land and Kodava land should be declared a union territory. The culture and tradition of Kodavas should be included in the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Unesco, he said.

Bopanna: Indian players will benefit from more Challengers

Speaking after an unveiling of his portrait at the KSLTA in honour of his French Open mixed doubles victory, Bopanna said last week’s tournament in Pune and the ongoing one here proved that Indian players can step up if they get to play more Challenger events.

India’s No.1 doubles player Rohan Bopanna believes nothing can prevent Indian players from stepping things up if they have access to more Challenger events. Speaking after an unveiling of his portrait at the KSLTA in honour of his French Open mixed doubles victory, Bopanna said last week’s tournament in Pune and the ongoing one here proved that.

“At Pune there were two Indians in the final and here we are seeing Sumit Nagal and Yuki Bhambri play so well. Yuki has a great chance to be in the top 100 again. So the more Challengers we have in India, the better. If each State can have a Challenger and a Future then definitely we will produce a lot more players.”

Reflecting on his own season during which he won four titles and finished runner-up thrice even while playing with multiple partners, Bopanna said: “The key thing I learned especially with the partner changes was to completely focus on my game and not really worry about who I was partnering…to focus on my strengths and the way I play.”

In spite of forging a successful partnership with Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas, he will pair up with Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin for the upcoming season.

“The challenge that I had with Cuevas this year was that we didn’t really practice much. He played singles so we only played matches. So I decided to find someone who was focused on doubles.”

Bopanna has played before with Roger-Vasselin before – most recently at Wimbledon 2017 – and with a fair amount of success.

“I always like to choose someone who gives me the chance to play my game freely. He doesn’t have any major weapons but he is a solid returner. And he helps me a lot at the net. He gives me the freedom to be aggressive.”

‘Rakshith and I will be working together’

Rashmika Mandanna
Rashmika Mandanna

Actor Rashmika Mandanna has just completed shooting for ‘Anjani Putra’ with Puneeth and ‘Chamak’ with Ganesh.

In ‘Anjani Putra’ she plays a lively character, while ‘Chamak’ will see her slip into the role of a homemaker.

The actor says that she had the freedom to improvise and make contributions to the script in both the projects.

Rashmika has her hands full at the moment but doesn’t want to lose any opportunity to work on experimental subjects.

She talks to Nina C George about her journey so far.
What’s your role in ‘Chamak’?
I play Ganesh’s wife in the movie. It is unlike the roles that I have worked on before.

What is the movie about?
The story traces the life of a young married couple living in a city. The film delves into the challenges and pressures faced by young couples. It also takes a look at how important one’s
attitude is when confronted with problems.

What made you accept ‘Anjani Putra’?
I liked the way my character is positioned in the film. My onscreen name is Geetha. I could easily relate to the childish ways and lively nature of the character.

The audio of ‘Anjani Putra’ has just been released. Tell us about it.

Two of our songs have been shot on the streets of UK. That was a brilliant experience. Each song has a different feel to it.
Puneeth is a good dancer. Was it tough to match steps with him?
More than matching steps, I was overwhelmed by seeing how helpful Puneeth is. He takes you along with him and is supportive of his co-stars. It is fun when big stars help you at every step.

How was your experience of acting with Puneeth and Ganesh?
It is interesting to watch how established actors go about their job. How they handle their characters and what they do to get under the skin of the character is in itself a learning
process. I treasure the time spent with them.

Are you under pressure to prove yourself as an actor?
I am not under any pressure because I like to work at my own pace. I am fortunate to have bagged projects with Puneeth and Ganesh this early in my career and I know that it is going to be tough going forward. But that doesn’t make me nervous. It has only made me a stronger person.

Will we see you work with Rakshith Shetty anytime soon?
Yes, Rakshith and I will be working together in the future. It is now doubly exciting to work with him because we are very comfortable in each other’s company.

Karnataka : To save River Cauvery, Kodagu students send a scroll to Prime Minister Narendra Modi

A group of children in Kodagu have written — rather drawn — to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to protect river Cauvery which is under threat because of unplanned development activities. Instead of the usual way of writing a letter, the children opted for a scroll which has a series of paintings which depict the current state of the river.
ScrollKF25nov2017

Meena Cariappa, a social worker associated with the Opportunity School in Madikeri and wife of Air Marshal Cariappa (rtd), told Bangalore Mirror, “it is a scary situation the way river Cauvery is facing. While environment activists are working towards protecting the river, the children of Kodagu have joined hands in this mission and have attempted to draw the attention of the prime minister himself.”

She says if PM can look into the issue, the river can be a role model for the entire country itself.

She said, “Apart from a tweet to the Prime Minister’s Office, we have sent a six-ft–long scroll to the Prime Minister’s residence, hoping that he would look at it and there could be some change. There are many things happening in the name of development which is destroying the river, the lifeline of South India.”

The scroll reads: Respected Prime Minister, Please Save the Cauvery. We can see it dying and it won’t be there when we grow up. Only you can save it. There is a photograph of the Cauvery flowing in the centre. There are two photographs of the river on either side — one stating ‘what you had’ and another ‘what we get’. The entire text is handwritten on a recycled paper. It has pictures of about 100 students, though nearly 1,000 kids participated.”

“We have sent this scroll to the Prime Minister’s residence as part of Children’s Day celebration. We are hopeful that that he will respond to the students’ request. We are waiting,” Meena said.

Works on Gen Thimayya Museum will be completed by March: Umashree

Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree on Monday said that work on construction of General Thimayya Museum in Kodagu will be completed by March next year, before his birth anniversary.

Replying to S Veena Achaiah (Cong), who sought to know the reason for the construction work being very slow, in the Legislative Council, she said the land where the museum is being built was owned by Transport department. There was some delay in transferring the land to the Kannada and Culture department. So the construction work was going in slow pace, she added.

The minister said the department has now expedited the work, and it will be completed by March next year.

Earlier, Veena Achaiah said the government had sanctioned Rs 5.50 crore for General Thimayya Museum in 2013. So far, only Rs 45 lakh has been utilised. Works should be expedited and state government should ensure that the museum works are completed by March. It should be inaugurated by March 21, birth anniversary of General Thimayya, she added.

To another question by Jayamala of Congress on installing the statue of former chief minister K C Reddy at Vidhana Soudha, Umashree said the government is unable to do so because of the Supreme Court order.
She, however, added that an appropriate decision will be taken after holding a meeting with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in this regard.

Robin Uthappa’s unselfish contribution in Rohit Sharma’s 264

Robin Uthappa’s unselfish contribution in Rohit Sharma’s 264

uthappaKF18nov2017

November 13 is often remembered for India batsman Rohit Sharma’s magnanimous 264 against Sri Lanka in the 4th ODI of the series at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata in 2014. Rohit’s freakish 264 is widely recognised as among the best ODI knocks by any batsman but very few can recall the huge role played by his partner Robin Uthappa in the death overs.

Uthappa joined Rohit when India’s score were 276-4 after 40.2 overs. The Indian opener had already gone past 150-run mark and in next 58 balls, Rohit managed to accumulate more than 100 runs and created a world record which was far away from the second best at that time.

Playing against a poor bowling Sri Lankan attack, Uthappa had the perfect chance to score fifty or more which could have helped him in cementing his place in the ODI side for the coming World Cup 2015. But it was Uthappa’s inglorious selfless run-a-ball 16 which was the reason behind Rohit posting a colossal score to his name.

The duo added 128 runs in just 58 balls together, with Uthappa’s contribution of mere 12.5% to the partnership. The percentage number definitely looks very small but it was all for the sake of team and batting partner. Out of 16 runs Uthappa scored, 12 were singles, which ensured Rohit stayed on strike for as much as possible.

Further, Uthappa played only 6 more international matches for India — 4 ODIs and 2 T20Is till July 2015. Uthappa has been one of the big player from Karnataka and from 2017-18 season onwards, he has shifted to Saurashtra in domestic crcket.

Kerala calls the Coorg lass

Sandalwood star Harshika Poonacha is all set to make her debut in Malayalam cinema.

Harshika Poonacha
Harshika Poonacha

Like the historic Charminar, which is a symbol of monumental beauty, this Coorg beauty has encountered something special with another kind of Charminar!

After making a mark in Kannada, Telugu and Tamil, Harshika Poonacha has now bagged a beautiful ticket to Mollywood. In her debut movie in Malayalam titled Charminar, she plays a Mallu girl based in Bengaluru. The actress who is fluent in all South Indian languages including Kodava, Tulu and Konkani, talks all about her new exciting journey, and much more.

“Even as my debut Tamil movie Un Kadhal Yerrindhal is yet to release, I have taken up a very special project in Malayalam. I could not have asked for more especially when I was told that the team had auditioned at least 1,500 girls for the role. It may sound exaggerated but the team was very particular about the girl’s character who had to look good in both Indian and as well hold herself well as a Western super model. Some matched perfectly for the model’s part and others for Indian girl’s character, and hence the search continued.

Finally, when someone referred my name along with my portfolio, I fit both the roles, as a pakka desi, geeky looking girl and a model, so they approached me,” says Harshika Poonacha.

Her debut Malayalam movie is being directed by Ajith C Logesh, and has two male actors in the lead — Ashwin Kumar and Hemanth Menon. While her latest Kannada movie Upendra Matte Baa, starring alongside Real Star Upendra sees her play a special cameo appearance, it also includes a ‘real’ foot tapping number releasing this week, she has signed another in Kannada titled Chitte.

Back to her Mollywood debut, the actress reveals that it has a special connection with namma Kannada. “As I play a Mallu girl in Bengaluru, I get to speak Kannada in some parts of Charminar. This is something I improvised and convinced my director that I would speak in Kannada whenever I am happy and excited. As I said, I have two shades to my character, the transformation from an ordinary typical Indian girl to super model is the best part.”

With regard to her multi-lingual skills, she adds that living in Bengaluru has helped her learn all the south Indian languages. “Language has never been a problem and I feel it is a ‘power’ to me. I can speak Kannada, Kodava, Konkani, Tuli, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi and English fluently. Nobody reads me my lines, I understand the emotions behind it and deliver,” she adds.

Before flying away like a Chitte, she shares her Bollywood dreams: “When I had been for my photoshoot, I did come across several offers to work including a project of Madhur Bhandarkar, and another one starring Sanjay Dutt. I was almost starting shooting for one them but they asked me to shift my base to Mumbai. I was in a confused state of mind with commitments down South and my prime intention was to make a name for myself in Kannada first, thus it kept me from it.

Moreover, I could not leave my parents. I, sometimes regret it but I am hopeful about it, and also glad that I am heading in the right direction,” she signs off.

Vijay Suriya: My first crush on a TV personality was Shwetha Chengappa

Earliest memories of television: That would be of my father renting out a VCR and video cassettes from a neighbouring library and us watching at least one film a week. We had a small black & white TV set at home. Some time in the mid 90s, we bought a colour TV. The brand that we had bought was popular for its tag line “Neighbour’s envy, Owner’s pride.” It was such a big deal when we bought that TV because it was huge and a colour TV above all. It had fancy buttons and our entire street was in awe when we first got it home.

VijayKF14nov2017

All-time favourite TV serials: Shakthimaan stands out in my memory even today. Then I remember waiting for the weekend to watch the Donald Duck series. When cable TV came in, it was Kadambari, because my mother used to watch it all the time. I was still a kid but Shwetha Chengappa who played a major part in it was my first crush among TV personalities. I loved watching Ripleys Believe It Or Not and also World’s Funniest Animals.

Advice to newbies entering television: Whether it’s TV or cinema, I’d say, patience is the key. And always remember that you can’t become a superstar overnight. Work hard and also remember to respect your profession.

Karnataka : Third edition of Barefoot Marathon to be held in December

Categories at the marathon include one-mile run, 10 km, 21 km and 42 km
Categories at the marathon include one-mile run, 10 km, 21 km and 42 km

The third edition of the world’s first barefoot marathon will be held at the Tata Coffee Sports Ground at Pollibeta in Kodagu on Dec 10.

Cheppudira Nikki Ponappa, professional golfer, coach and founder of Coorg Wellness Foundation, said the event is being organised with Milind Soman as part of the Coorg Reconnect Initiative by Coorg Wellness Foundation.

Ponappa said, “Barefoot marathon is an initiative through which we want the people of Kodagu as well as anyone who is a nature and wildlife lover to reconnect with mother earth and the best way to do this is by being barefoot. Through this event, we are trying to spread awareness about the rehabilitation of the elephant habitat and we want to replant the 54,000 trees that were chopped from Kodagu for a power grid. So, through the event, we hope to create awareness for planting native fruit trees in an eco-sensitive area like Kodagu. Our wildlife and elephants need to stay in the forest and enjoy their homeland.”

The organisers are expecting about 500 runners to participate from all over the country. “While for the natives of Kodagu, cash prize is awarded, outsiders who win prizes take home produce such as coffee and pepper. We want people to come and experience Kodagu and take back Kodagu with them. The entire event is an eco-friendly event with a ban on plastics. Even water is served in coconut shells. There are no loud speakers nor do we use electricity. The warm up begins with the folk music known as the ‘Vallaga’ and people will have to warm up by dancing the traditional Kodava dance,” Ponappa said.

Ponappa said the categories include one-mile run, 10 km, 21 km and 42 km.
