Remembering those who fought for freedom

A rare document from 1931 reveals the role played by freedom fighters from Kodagu

A rare document from 1931 obtained by The Hindu here speaks volumes about people from Kodagu district who were in the forefront of the freedom struggle under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.

The people of Kodagu had issued a ‘manapatra’ then, a letter of honour, commending and saluting the 98 brave men and women who revolted against the British, following the footsteps of the Father of the Nation. They had taken part in the satyagraha in 1930-31 and were incarcerated.

Pandyanda Belliappa, Kollimada Karumbaiah, Chekkera Monnaiah, Makki Krishnaiah, Mallengada Chengappa, Abdul Gafoor Khan, Ajjikuttira Chinnappa, Ponnimada Machaiah, Kalengada Chinnappa, K.M. Subraya, Puliyanda Subbaiah, V. R. Thammaiah, Bidarur Madaiah, Chokira Madappa, Poojari Muthappa, Pandikanda Madappa, H.R. Krishnaiah were some among the people honoured by the people of Kodagu in 1931. Puliyanda Subbaiah, who hailed from Maggula village, was a true Gandhian till his death. He wore Khadi and counselled patience whenever a rift arose among people. So was V.R. Thammaiah, another Gandhian, who also hailed from the village. Elders say that H.R. Krishnaiah even refused to apply for pension after Independence saying if the Government recognised his contribution, it should come to his doorstep and give him the pension papers.

Even women did not lag behind. Kotera Accavva, Balyatanda Muddavva, Mukkatira Bojamma, Machimanda Medakka, Appanderanda Kalamma also joined the freedom struggle. The manapatra given to them on March 11, 1931, stated that they had been imprisoned for preaching the message of Mahatma Gandhi and taking part in the satyagraha.

The manapatra further stated that the people of Kodagu would not be able to offer them (the freedom fighters) privileges such as ‘Jahagir’, ‘Umbali’ — both land grants for service rendered — or ‘Pinchani’ (pension), but would carry forward the noble message of freedom struggle, support and abide by it.

A sentence read significantly that “Bharata mateya makallada Kodaginavaru drohigalalla, Bhartada veera putra putriyaru embudannu prapanchakke saridiri”. This meant “the people of Kodagu, who are the children of mother India, are not traitors. You have heralded a message to the world that you are valiant sons and daughters of India.” The people who were mentioned in the manapatra at the function presided by Biddanda Subbaiah, also had taken a pledge to follow the ideals propounded by Gandhiji such as ‘swadeshi’ and liquor prohibition.

A section of people might feel that some people of Kodagu supported the British. But it cannot be forgotten that Guddemane Appaiah Gowda who had fought the British was hanged at the Fort here by the British on October 31, 1837, much before the Sepoy Mutiny took place.

Kodagina Gowramma had offered all her jewellery to Gandhiji when he had visited here soliciting peoples’ support for continuing the freedom movement in the early 1930s.

It is an unfortunate irony that the Freedom Fighters’ memorial, the work for which started at Gonicoppa 12 years ago and the Guddemane Appaiah Gowda memorial, of which works are now underway, are yet to be completed.

RallyKF16jul2016

Bangalore :

As Goa gears up for the third edition of Force Gurkha RFC India, Karnataka has broken all records by sending the highest number of entries RFC India has received till date from a single state. This year, a total of six teams from Karnataka will be participating in the country’s toughest and first international off-road motorsport event. Of these, four teams are from Bangalore Off-road Drivers Association (BODA), one team is from Coorg based V5 Offroaders and another is from Mudhogs of Sakleshpur.

The six teams, represented by BODA’s Madhusudan Reddy, Lokesh Aradhya (co-driver Rohith KR), Vivek Kuriakosse (co-driver Ashok Kuriakose) and Pradeep Kumar (co-driver Prithviraj AC), Jagat Nanjappa (co-driver Chetan Chengappa) from V5 Offroaders and Narthan Byramudi (co-driver Satish Kumar) from Mudhogs, aim to overwhelm the rest of the competitors by their talent and team-spirit.

Organized by Delhi-based Cougar Motorsport Pvt. Ltd., Force Gurkha RFC India 2016 will be held in Goa from 22ndJuly to 29th July. It is the India Chapter of the iconic Rainforest Challenge of Malaysia.

The event is divided into four competitive legs – the Prologue, the Predator, the Terminator and the Twilight Zone – which are further segregated into 24 Special Stages. The team with the maximum points at the end of all the Special Stages is announced the winner of the competition and the top Indian driver of the event gets an automatic, free entry to the RFC Mother Event to be held in Malaysia at the end of the year.

This year Kannadigas seem to present the most versatile and flexible representation of the lot.

33 year old Rohith and 45 year old Vivek, both claim that they will be showcasing the most unique vehicle of all. “We are using 40 inch tyres, custom made axle and have made many modifications to give us that extra advantage,” said Vivek.

“We are using a suspension unlike any other, which will give us that power to weight ratio,” Rohith added.

Jagat Nanjappa, a 55 year old rallyist, has been a national champion nine times. He said, “RFC South India was fun but not as tedious as I expected it to be. I am looking forward for the tough and thrilling experience at the RFC India Mother Event in Goa”

“It’s my third time at RFC India, and me and my driver have an experience of both driving as well as navigating, which has given us high hope for a podium finish,” claims Rohith, who also won the ‘Jungleman Award’ in the first season of RFC India.

There are 25 teams in total participating this season, bringing in a range of competition to deal with.

Kodagu battlers ready for action

KodaguBattlersKF16jul2016

If there is one place in Karnataka that has produced top quality hockey players on a consistent basis, it has to be Kodagu. And when it comes to producing Olympians, few regions can match this picturesque district.

Joining the stalwarts likes MP Ganesh, BP Govinda (both 1972 Olympics), AB Subbaiah (1992, 96) and CS Poonacha (1992), Arjun Halappa (2004) who all donned the Indian colours at the quadrennial extravaganza, is the quartet of SV Sunil, Nikkin Thimmaiah, SK Uthappa and VR Raghunath who will form part of India’s charge in Rio.

“I am lucky to have been born in a region that has such rich tradition of hockey,” gushed India’s ace dragflicker Raghunath.

“The tradition dates long back. We have that in our blood. Promoting hockey and joining the Indian Army are the two things that people in Kodagu look up to as they grow up,” he remarked.

While Raghunath believes that it’s the love for the game that has resulted in such a surge of players, the vice-captain of the Rio-bound side, Sunil, credited the way in which Kodagu nurtures the upcoming talent. “I think it has got more to do with the way we nurture talent. We have clubs and loads of teams that play hockey,” said the forward.

“I remember my days. The seniors at the club would come home and drag me to the ground if I didn’t turn up for a practice session.”

Uthappa explains the keen interest that the people back in his hometown take in the game: “Recently when I was back home for two days, the way people spoke — not only the ones I knew, but also strangers — about the Champions Trophy was really touching.

“It not just a compliment, but people would dissect and analyse every move of yours. Things like you should have done this and not that and so on. That shows the interest people have,” he said.

Joining the illustrious list of hockey Olympians from Kodagu for the first time is Thimmaiah. And the 25-year-old is eagerly looking forward to it. “I grew up reading and hearing about Olympics. And here I am preparing for what will be my first Olympics. I want to ensure that I do well and give the best for my team,” stressed the 25-year-old.

While the Kodagu quartet is sure to play a key role in the Indian set up for sometime now, there are worrying signs. The junior national side, that is busy preparing for the Junior World Cup later this year, has no player from Karnataka. Raghunath, though, believes that it’s just a phase.

“Yes, we did have a small break in between, where you had no one coming up in the age-group category. But I see it as a part of a cycle,” he said.

“We have been identifying good players in the U-16 and U-18 level. And I am sure by next year we will have guys in these age-group teams too. But insofar as the Junior World Cup is concerned, the core group looks set and it’s difficult for anyone to break in now,” he reasoned.

Karnataka quartet eyes glory in hockey at Rio

Bengaluru :

Karnataka has added another feather to its glorious hockey history with four players having secured berths in the 16-member Indian squad for the Olympics. The quartet of SV Sunil, VR Raghunath, SK Uthappa and Nikkin Thimmaiah – all from Kodagu district – will have a key role to play when India launch their campaign in Rio de Janeiro against Ireland on August 6.

Star striker Sunil, who was handed the role of vice-captain, said he enjoyed taking up responsibilities. “Vice-captaincy came as a surprise. I was not expecting it,” said an elated Sunil, who essayed a similar role at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup (April) and Champions Trophy (June).

“I feel that I play better when I am asked to shoulder a big responsibility. I enjoy doing that. My job is to share the decision-making duties with my skipper and motivate our players,” added Sunil, 26, who made his Olympic debut at London 2012.

The striker, a veteran of 190 international matches, felt the team is headed in the right direction. “We have prepared well for Rio. We have identified small mistakes and worked on them. The players are high on confidence,” he added.

With 214 international caps, Raghunath is second in the list of senior members in the side after former skipper Sardar Singh (247). Being part of a team that finished a disappointing 12th at the London Games, Raghunath realises the challenges of playing at the highest level.

The drag-flick exponent, making his second Olympic appearance, felt the team has improved in all departments. “London Olympics was very disappointing. But this time we improved in all aspects of the game,” he said. “In the tournaments leading up to Olympics, we have played all big teams and proved that we are a force to reckon with. We have prepared strategies after analysing other teams’ strengths and weaknesses. What is more important for us is to start on a winning note in Rio.”

Midfielder Uthappa, 24, who was part of the Indian team in London, said. “It is great that we have four players from Kodagu in the Olympic team. Making my second appearance in the Olympics gives me a high but I am looking to contribute to the team’s success,” he said.
“Our performance at the London Olympics was very unsatisfactory and we want to put up a better show this time,” Uthappa, who has played 94 matches for India, added.

It’s dream come true for forward Thimmaiah, who will be making his debut. “It’s an honour to represent India at the Olympics. The positive thing is that in the lead-up to the Olympics, we have produced good results in all tournaments. We will look to maintain the same form at Rio,” said 26-year-old, who has 71 international caps.

Rohan Bopanna yet to get a word from AITA or Leander Paes on Rio Olympics pairing

The association chose Leander Paes instead, a selection that did not go down well with Bopanna, world No.9 in doubles rankings.

Rohan Bopanna at Chandigarh Club. He will team up with Paes in the Davis Cup doubles tie against South Korea at the weekend.

It has been a month since the All India Tennis Association (AITA) has turned down Rohan Bopanna’s request of partnering Saketh Myneni in doubles at Rio Olympics. The association chose Leander Paes instead, a selection that did not go down well with Bopanna, world No.9 in doubles rankings.

On Monday, when asked about the selection, Bopanna played it right down the line. “They have asked us to play together and that’s what we are going to do. When you go out to play, you play as professional players. We just have to go on court and play our tennis and try to gel together on court and try to find a way to win. I have not had a word from anyone. Neither from the federation nor from the player,” said Bopanna, who is in Chandigarh for the Davis Cup tie against South Korea.

“Whatever I say, it won’t make a difference. That’s not going to change the scenario. We just have to stick with what is happening. Like I said everyday is a new day so we will have to wait and see. Did I have a choice? They did not tell me and I got the information through media,” Bopanna added.

In the intervening one month Bopanna had been busy playing with regular partner Florin Mergea. They bowed out in the round of 16 at Wimbledon and lost in the same round at the Queen’s Cup.

With less than a month to go for the Rio Olympics, Bopanna will now team up with Paes against South Korea on the grass courts of Chandigarh Club and the 36-year-old made it clear playing with Paes on the tour is not an option.

“I cannot get in with Leander to play a tournament. There is no Indian out there with whom I can get in any tournament if I want to train ahead of the Rio Olympics. The cut-off in Washington and Toronto is 50 and there is no Indian ranked high barring me. So, even if I want to play with somebody, I cannot play. Unless you assure me of a wildcard for such events,” added Bopanna. Paes is currently ranked 55 in doubles.

Bopanna and Paes have a 2-2 win-loss record in Davis Cup while the former and Mayneni have a 2-1 score out of the three times they have teamed up in doubles for India. Next week Bopanna would be off to Toronto for the ITF masters before landing in Rio five days prior to the tennis event. He has been training under his coach Scott David and says the federation should send a coach and physio at Rio.

“I will have five days to train at Rio. I am still hoping that the federation sends a coach and physio for me. I have been training with my personal coach Scott David and he will be with me in Toronto, not in Rio,” he said.

The last rites of Dy.SP M.K. Ganapathy was held with full police honours in his native village of Rangasamudra in Kodagu on Friday.

The Last Post was played and the firing of three rounds in the air, followed by wreaths laid by senior police officers completed the solemn ceremony. They then went along with family members to the farm for the final rituals held amid an incessant drizzle.

The poignant rituals was punctuated by an occasional sob by family members. Gapanapthy’s wife, Pavana, and their children Nehal, studying engineering, and Sahil, who is in school, were stoic while trying to come to terms with the tragedy.

Ganapathy’s brothers M.K. Thammaiah, a Dy.SP in Ramanagaram, and Machaiah, a planter, were dazed throughout the ceremony, which concluded late in the evening.

“It was Ganapathy who inspired me and brought me the applications to write the exam to get into the police service,” recalled Mr. Thammaiah. Though he was depressed and under treatment, we did not expect him to resort to the extreme step.”

Earlier in the day, there was a steady stream of friends, relatives, former colleagues, and well-wishers to the farmhouse to pay their last respects.

The post-mortem of the body was conducted at the Government Hospital in Madikeri on Friday morning, and later handed over to the family.

Scores of BJP activists staged a dharna and blocked the road in Madikeri. They dispersed once the body was shifted to Rangasamudra. A large posse of policemen were deployed to prevent any untoward incident and to ensure smooth conduct of the last rites.
