“The reality is, there’s plenty of East-West musical projects that are horrible,” says Rudresh Mahanthappa, expressing a sentiment open-minded listeners of global sounds are often afraid to voice.

The New York City saxophonist is introducing his own East-West musical fusion, Gamak, who he leads in a performance at New York University Abu Dhabi on Tuesday November 24.

The ensemble’s music is anything but horrible – although it is demanding.

A fiery, phenomenal improviser who was once crowned Alto Saxophonist of the Year by leading jazz magazine DownBeat, Mahanthappa’s playing is exhaustingly inventive.

Backed by a rock-influenced rhythmic section of drums, bass and electric guitar, his sax spits spiralling, jagged phrases that skirt scales drawn from both sides of the globe.

The Gamak project – realised on the 2012 album of the same name – is the latest step in the 44-year-old Indian-American’s exploration of Indian classical music.

This began during his studies at leading jazz school Berklee College of Music a quarter of a century ago, and culminated with a Guggenheim Fellowship to study Carnatic music, resulting in the ensemble Samdhi in 2011.

“Exploring Indian music was something that came out of that early-adulthood confusion – trying to understand to what degree I was American and to what degree I was Indian, and how these things can occur simultaneously, in concert, as opposed to in conflict,” he says.

Gamak is named after the term for South Indian melodic ornamentation, but Mahanthappa’s playing also seeks to examine how tunes are traditionally embellished by players of Chinese, African and Indonesian music.

“The way melody is decorated is what gives it the human quality,” he explains. “I was always fascinated by this very specific, almost-science of how this melodic ornamentation occurs. It’s not random at all, it’s very stylised. People always say: ‘You shouldn’t play the melody straight, you have to give some life to it’. Well, that’s all well and good, but how about making a larger conversation about what that actually means, and exploring how it occurs in different parts of the world.”

Mahanthappa changed direction on this year’s Bird Calls, a set of new compositions each inspired by a specific solo or tune by the alto legend Charlie Parker.

For this 16th release, the restless spirit is contemplating either recording music from children’s TV shows from around the globe, collaborating with a comedian and live video artists on a politically-motivated performance piece, or recording a collection of Michael Brecker compositions that the late, great saxophonist never had the chance to record in his lifetime.

“It’s all part of one big journey,” says Mahanthappa. “I still say: ‘I’m a professional musician’. I make albums and tour and perform and do all these things, but sometimes I think the music is just a by-product of me continuing to get myself, to understand who I am as a citizen of the world.”

• Rudresh Mahanthappa and Gamak perform at East Plaza, The Arts Centre, at NYUAD on Tuesday November 24 at 8pm. Limited free tickets available on arrival or from nyuad-artscenter.org

It’s been a fantastic year, says Bopanna

London :

Second seeds Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Rojer defeated eighth seeds Bopanna and Mergea 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday evening for their 11th team title, and third of the year that includes their maiden Grand Slam at Wimbledon.

“It was just a tough day today. But it’s been a great week, making it to the final, first-time outing for us as a team,” said the 35-year-old Bopanna after the loss.

“And for the season, starting out in April, playing just about a handful of tournaments and to qualify here, I think it’s been a fantastic year for us. We can take a lot of positives from this year, and we are looking forward to starting fresh in January.”

Bopanna and Mergea first teamed up at Casablanca in April and end the year with a 31-16 record, including two titles from four finals. Mergea added: “It’s a pleasure to play in the World Tour Finals title match. Obviously, this has been the first time two Romanians (Tecau being the other) played the doubles final here. I think it’s an historic day for us.”

Bopanna ends the year as World No.9, having won four titles — two with Mergea in Madrid and Stuttgart and two with Daniel Nestor in Dubai and Sydney, making 2015 the most successful season of his career.

Shortly after lunch, Uthappa targeted left-arm spinner Manan Sharma to bring up his fifty. Mayank too came up with a couple of cover drives to reach his maiden ton that was laced with 17 boundaries.

With the pacers finding it tough, Gambhir brought offspinner Dhruv Shorey but the move backfired as Uthappa smashed the tweaker for 32 runs in the over as he clobbered him for four sixes and two boundaries.

Ranji Trophy: Robin Uthappa’s ton puts Karnataka in command

RobinKF11nov2015

Mysuru:

India discard Robin Uthappa on Monday cracked his second century of the season to help Karnataka gain a 168-run lead after they declared their first innings at 400 for nine against Odisha on the third day of their Group A Ranji Trophy cricket match played here.

Trailing by 168 runs, Odisha were zero for one in their second innings when the umpires called off the day’s play due to bad light. Nataraj Behera and first innings centurion Govinda Poddar were batting on zero as opener Rajesh Dhuper (0) lost his wicket to Vinay Kumar in the very first over of their second innings. Karnataka, who registered their first outright win against Rajasthan in their previous match, would go for the second outright victory this season when they take the field on fourth and final day of the match tomorrow. Uthappa smashed a sparkling 148 runs off 257 balls with 11 boundaries and two sixes, and Karun Nair scored a useful 73 runs off 164 balls with six boundaries and a six. The duo stitched a 169-run partnership for the fourth wicket, which took the match away from the hands of Odisha.

After Odisha succeeded in breaking Nair and Uthappa’s partnership, the visitors did well to restrict the hosts by bagging six wickets for 103 runs, with slow-left-arm orthodox Dhiraj Singh (3/156) leading the fightback and ably supported by right-arm medium Suryakant Pradhan (3/94). Basant Mohanty and Biplab Samantaray claimed two and one wicket respectively. As Singh and Pradhan picked up wickets at regular intervals, lower-order batsmen including Chidamabarm Gautam (20), Stuart Binny (4) and Shreyas Gopal (13) failed to capitalise on Uthappa-Nair partnership.

Resuming at 255 for three, Karnataka soon lost Nair after he added 21 runs to his overnight score of 52. Left-armer Singh had him caught by Pratik Das. Binny lasted for seven balls and was cleaned up by Samantaray after he scored four. Gautam was out for 20 as he became another victim of Singh. Gopal and Jagadeesha Suchith did not last long and fell to Pradhan and Singh rather quickly which prompted Vinay to declare the innings.

Bangalore :

Indian golfer S Chikkarangappa successfully defended his title after defeating compatriot Shubhankar Sharma on the first extra hole at the TAKE Solutions India Masters here on Saturday.

Chikka and Sharma, who shared the overnight three-shot lead, ended regulation play tied on 25-under 263 after posting identical final rounds of six-under 66s at the Eagle-The Golf Village.

The duo returned to the par-four 18th hole for the play-off battle where Chikka outplayed Sharma with a birdie against a par to claim his second Asian Development Tour (ADT) title at the USD 120,000 event.

Abhijit Chadha, also of India, returned with a stunning 62 to take third place on 269 while countryman Rashid Khan and American Greg Moss settled one shot back in fourth following matching rounds of 67s.

Chikka, who fired seven birdies against a lone bogey, played consistently to stay in control for most of the round and kept his cool even when Sharma surmounted a late charge to force a play-off.
“I haven’t really performed well this season. This win came at the right time and I am confident this will be a sign of better things to come. There were a lot of expectations from me this week, especially from family and friends. I’m glad I didn’t disappoint them,” said the 22-year-old Chikka.

“I wasn’t really nervous out there. I just played my own game. I have been in this kind of situation before so I knew how to handle it. I guess my past experience helped. This win definitely boosted my confidence and I’m looking forward to better results at the Panasonic Open India on the Asian Tour next week,” he added.

Chikka will take home a winner’s prize cheque of USD 21,000 and receive six Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points courtesy of his win.

Despite missing out on a grandstand finish, Sharma took pride in what was his best result on the ADT and a record personal best 72-hole score.

“I kept calm out there. I played really well on the back nine and finished with four straight birdies to force extra time with Chikka. I knew I had a chance coming to the last two holes. It was a pity to miss out on the birdie putt in the play-off. I hit two good shots but I guess I just didn’t trust the putt,” said Sharma.

“Overall, it was still a great experience. I am happy with the way I played all week. This is my best result on the ADT. I didn’t expect myself to finish with a 25-under total so it was great,” added the 19-year-old.

Prakash Padukone hoped that OGQ’s sports science would make a difference to Jwala and Ashwini’s fitness levels.

Olympic Gold Quest, the not for profit organisation founded by sports legends Geet Sethi and Prakash Padukone, announced on Wednesday that it will support the badminton doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa in the run up to next year’s Rio Olympics.

Badminton legend Prakash Padukone hoped that OGQ’s sports science would make a difference to Jwala and Ashwini’s fitness levels.

“Jwala and Ashwini are undoubtedly the number one women’s doubles pair in India and they are consistently among the top 20 in the world. I feel that OGQ’s efficient and timely support will help them immensely.

“I also believe that OGQ’s sports science team will make a difference to their fitness levels. The emotional support that OGQ provides the athletes will help Jwala and Ashwini completely focus on their training,” said Padukone.

Jwala said that OGQ’s support has come just at the right time with Olympics only nine months away.

“With less than nine months left for the Rio 2016 Olympics, I think OGQ support for Ashwini and myself has come at the right time. Our dream is to win a medal for India at the Olympics and OGQ support is a massive boost to us. I can already see an environment of excellence and positivity within OGQ. I wish to only focus on our Olympic preparations from now on,” said Jwala.

Ashwini added: “I am so happy that Jwala and me are a part of the OGQ family now. We have seen the way OGQ has been supporting other top badminton players over the years.

“We have already started working with OGQ a month back and the professional approach of the team, the warmth and the personal rapport is clearly evident. It is a huge relief to get this kind of support.”

Founded with a mission to help Indian athletes win Olympic gold medals, OGQ supports the training of 75 athletes in eight individual sports.

Worked in ‘Peddlers’ purely out of love: Gulshan Devaiah

Gulshan Devaiah, who worked in Vasan Bala’s critically acclaimed film “Peddlers”, still considers it a labour of love.

“This project is very close to my heart. I don’t think I’ve worked on a film so far in my career purely out of love. If I ask me to choose my best performance from my films so far, I’d pick ‘Peddlers’ without a doubt,” Gulshan Devaiah said.
“This project is very close to my heart. I don’t think I’ve worked on a film so far in my career purely out of love. If I ask me to choose my best performance from my films so far, I’d pick ‘Peddlers’ without a doubt,” Gulshan Devaiah said.

It’s been three years since actor Gulshan Devaiah worked in Vasan Bala’s critically acclaimed film “Peddlers” and he still considers it a labour of love.

“This project is very close to my heart. I don’t think I’ve worked on a film so far in my career purely out of love. If I ask me to choose my best performance from my films so far, I’d pick ‘Peddlers’ without a doubt,” Gulshan told IANS.

Also starring Nimrat Kaur, Nishikant Kamat, Kriti Malhotra and Siddharth Menon, the film is jointly produced by Guneet Monga and Anurag Kashyap.

Despite receiving critical response when it was screened at International Critics’ Week, an independent film event which runs parallel to the Cannes International Film Festival, the movie still awaits theatrical release.

“Guneet has been working on strategy to release the film and it wasn’t possible then. She’s someone who doesn’t release her film just for the heck of it,” said Gulshan, and added the film hasn’t aged.
“This is not one of those glossy commercial films that have to be released within a time period. It’s very realistic and it’s not set in a particular time zone, so audiences will relate to it even if it’s released five years from now,” he said.

It’s a “very special” film for the “Shaitan” star because it gave him an opportunity to be a part of the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival.

“I remember the festival director telling us that they’ve been waiting for such an Indian film for a very long time. It felt so nice and encouraging,” he added.

On working in the film, Gulshan said the experience was “enjoyable”.

“Vasan is a very organic director and having worked with Anurag Kashyap; he knows his craft well and he’s also sort of has taken it to another level with this film,” he said.

“He knows how to pick his actors and extract the best out of them. He didn’t have a screenplay and therefore, handpicked actors who’d help him in creating scenes without writing them. It was a very creative process for all of us,” he revealed.

At the ongoing 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, “Peddlers” had its India premiere and had won everybody over.
