Annual Kodava Convention Of North America Held

KodavaConvention01KF09sept2018

Mysuru:

The annual Kodava Convention of North America was recently held in Myrtle Beach, SC, also known as the Golf Capital of the World. Over 370 Kodavas gathered at the Double Tree Resort by Hilton in Myrtle Beach, the venue of the grand two-day event.

The festivities began a day in advance with the making and rolling of ‘Kadumbutt’, a traditional rice dumpling eaten in Kodagu. The event was held at the house of Kambeyanda Dr. Ramesh and Dr. Leela. The hosts were Kodavas of Carolinas with support from community members from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Georgia.

On the first day of the convention, a variety of games and entertainment events were organised for all age groups while the performers got together (many of them practicing in person for the first time after months of co-ordination over social media). The informal pre-convention had more than 350 guests who let their hair down and partied late into the night.

While talented children like Tarana Mukkatira (violin) and Kanishk Mukkatira (piano) showcased their talent, seasoned performers like Namitha Achchandira enthralled the audience with her dance moves. Besides, there was an impromptu dance performance by 5-year-old Vianca Kallengada with some moral support from Anwita Monnanda that stole the show.

A morning walk was organised as part of the convention which not only promoted health and wellness but also helped raise funds to help the educational needs of economically challenged children in Kodagu. The second day’s main event started with the traditional lighting of the lamp by Dr. Kambeyanda Ramesh and Dr. Leela. Avinash Chottangada did the invocation in chaste Kodava language. A special mention was made about the victims of the recent floods and landslides in Kodagu.

Thaliyathakkibolcha and Baalopaat added the Kodava traditional elements to the event and helped showcase some of the traditions to our younger generation. Aiyappa Kechamada and Aashiq Paruvangada were the masters of the ceremony.

The ceremony started with prayer song by Kallichanda Kaveri from Denver and was followed by multiple cultural events including songs and dances. A quiz competition on Kodagu, its land, people and culture was organised by Nithan Thimmaiah Monnanda.

Gina Konganda, Founder President of Kodava Koota, spoke about the organisation and listed its achievements that include helping the Sri Ramakrishna old age home at Ponnampet in Kodagu, funding the legal expenses to evict illegal settlers in Devakad at Valnoor and planting about 10,000 saplings in Kodagu.

KodavaConvention04KF09sept2018

Besides, the first High School Achievement award ($1,000 and a plaque sponsored by Kodava Koota) was presented to Paruvangada Bopaiah, son of Paruvangada Kuttaiah and Pooja. Kodava Koota which has been running a fund-raising campaign to help redevelopment of Kodagu and the affected people leveraged the opportunity to collect money that will be used to assist those affected. Over 50,000 dollars (INR Rs. 35 lakh) have already been collected and more money will be collected for rehabilitation.

Dr. Kuliakanda Sannu and Dr. Nalini, Alemada Geetha Kiran, Mukkatira Naina Udai, Baduvanda Dr. Changumani and Dr. Shobha, Kandera Deepthi Sharath, Kolera Shriti and Tarun, Mandepanda Uthappa, Chendrimada Deepa and Bopanna, Chottangada Rupica and Avinash were in the core team that organised the convention.

Community members of four countries participated in the convention and 27 States in the United States of America were represented. Over 174 Kodava families were present. The next annual convention will be held at Boston.

Dream launch for Dayana Erappa

The actor who is a Miss India finalist is all gung-ho about her debut film Chekka Chivantha Vaanam

DayanaKF03sept2018

Acting and films were never on the to-do list of Dayana Erappa. But, when the team of Madras Talkies called and told her that she had been chosen to play one of the lead roles in Mani Ratnam’s next film, she was confused, excited and nervous in equal measure.

Looking at the trailer of Chekka Chivantha Vaanam now, it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the girl Chaaya.

“I just entered modelling to give it a shot. Later, I took part in the Miss India beauty pageant and was judged the runner up. I was busy with my projects when I received a call from Mani Ratnam’s team. I went to give my first audition in Mumbai and the second one in Chennai. They called me after two months and said that I had gotten it,” says Dayana.

Born and brought up in Coorg, Dayana’s father owns a tea estate and her mother is a homemaker. She also has an elder sister who has completed her Masters in Criminology.

“My parents have always supported me and my sister. When I told my father that I was going to be part of a modelling project, he asked me whether I was sure? Since it was something I was trying out, he was okay with my decision.

Later, when I told him that I’m going to be part of Chekka…, he was like ‘Wow! Really?’All of them were happy with the news,” adds the model.

For a newbie to get a big launch with director Mani Ratnam is a dream come true. “Acting was not my priority at all. I was just a theatre artiste, I feel lucky that people think that apart from good looks, I can also act. I didn’t want to lose the chance. Especially, when it was a Mani Ratnam directorial,” she says.

Chekka Chivantha Vaanam is a Tamil film which is being dubbed in Telugu as Nawab. The trailer unveiled recently has garnered a huge number of views on YouTube.

Dayana feels very happy to have worked in a star-studded film which has Prakash Raj, Jayasudha, Arvind Swami, Jyothika, Arun Vijay, Aishwarya Rajesh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Silambarasan and others in lead roles. The DOP of the film is Santosh Sivan and music is composed by AR Rahman.

“Working with so many stars was an amazing experience. They never treated me like a newcomer, but have given me all the support to do my best,” said the Tamil ponnu who is yet to sign her next project after Chekka Chivantha Vaanam.

A Cry for Kodagu

Sandalwood has come together to help the state of Coorg and its people.

Harshika Poonacha.
Harshika Poonacha.

“It’s a very painful scenario at relief camps across the flood hit areas of Coorg with conditions at its worst ever,” explains actress Harshika Poonacha, who hails from the beautiful land of Kodagu, which is now facing the wrath of incessant rain after Kerala. The affected people of Kodagu have taken care of so many people in their lives, and fed so many people but today they are so dependent on others, she adds, of the land which has given its best to the nation, be it with the Army or other unique and versatile professions in various fields including sports, culture and tradition, and of course tourism, with a fine blend of their trademark coffee. Coorg is crying for help. And Sandalwood has taken it upon itself to help in the relief work. The film industry has been up and about, lending a helping hand, individually, and inspiring fans to aid in these difficult times. While several artistes, technicians, filmmakers and producers are donating towards flood relief activities, they are now propagating to rebuild Kodagu, and efforts are on to reconstruct an entire village which is badly affected by the floods. Bengaluru Chronicle reports.

“I am here (Kodagu) for the past four days now. The condition is bad. It is very painful to relate to the ground reality. I was serving food the other day, and people were in tears while they got food served,” Harshika shares her experience with a heavy heart, adding that these are people who would not have stayed in their relative’s place even for a day, but they are now staying in relief camps as they are helpless against the fury of nature.

One of the favourite locations for not just the Kannada film industry, but numerous other film industries as well, the Scotland of the south is definitely a favourite amongst filmmakers. While several leading men from Sandalwood have been donating money for relief work, most of them are helping in their personal capacities and facilitating the supply of basic needs like food and water to different areas.

Actress Sanjjanaa Galrani, who left for Coorg on Tuesday to volunteer and help the needy, says, “More and more youngsters should step out of their homes and head to Coorg, to physically help them, rather than just sit at home and pray,” she implores.

No doubt movies and movie stars are among the most effective when it comes to inspiring the public, especially younger minds to follow their footsteps, and they are being urged towards this good cause by many in the industry.

Abhinaya Chakravarthy Kiccha Sudeep, urges his fans, “I request all my fan associations to please look into what best could be done for the rain-affected areas in Karnataka. This is the best gift you all will be giving me. Please, please do your best. These are our people.” he said.

Meanwhile, Crazy Star V Ravichandran has proposed a long-term plan which the entire film industry has backed. He is pressing to turn this initiative into reality. During the mahurat of his new movie, Ravichandra, the Crazy Star declared that the whole industry should come forward and help rebuild Kodagu. “It is best to rebuild an entire village which is badly affected by the floods,” he said, and prominent personalities including Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar, Kiccha Sudeep, Yash, renowned producers have backed this plea.

Even several actress including those hailing from Coorg such as Rashmika Mandanna, Disha Poovaiah, and almost other leading ladies are doing their best. Let us all help and rebuild Kodagu, is Sandalwood’s call for help to pour in to support this wonderful land which is in dire need of relief.

UAE’s Kodava community tense as landslides batter Coorg

(PTI file)
(PTI file)

Kodavas, or Coorgis, living and working in the UAE are uniting together to send relief funds and supplies to their loved ones back home.

The Kodava community in the UAE is in a state of worry and panic as incessant rains in their hometown Coorg has destroyed their homes and infrastructure. Ravaged by rain, Coorg, the rural district in Kerala’s neighbouring state Karnataka, has suffered massive landslides.

Kodavas, or Coorgis, living and working in the UAE are uniting together to send relief funds and supplies to their loved ones back home. There are approximately a little over 250 Kodava community people living in the UAE.

Known for its coffee plantations, Coorg has very rugged terrain, making rescue operations a challenge in the district. Furthermore, according to the Kodavas in the UAE, heavy rains are not uncommon in Coorg. “What has shocked us is the landslides. This has caused massive damage to property,” said Shilpa Chinnappa, a Dubai- based marketing professional.

Her home is in a town called Kakkabe, which is 32km away from the central city of Madikeri. “Another problem Coorg is facing is poor connectivity. There is no cell phone range in a vast area across the entire district of Coorg, so it is hard to connect with people, and if they are stuck, they will not be able to communicate,” said Chinnappa. In her case, her father has been charging phone with a car battery. Residents also said that loads of construction debris and muck has settled into residential houses, and cleaning it out would be a challenge.

The community of Coorgis in the UAE are small. “We’ve been connecting with the community over social media, and several individuals have been sending cash relief.”

She added: “The main challenge is getting rescue operations to Coorg. There are no places to land helicopters.”

Given the current situation, the community has requested for drones to sight if anyone needs any help.

Nithin Chand, another Kodava and civil defence employee who has been living in the UAE for a little over three years, said: “Kaveri river is on the right-side of the road near my home. Even though there is a road that separates the home and the river, due to the back flow of water, my house has been completely flooded,” he said.

“Almost all houses in this area are covered. Agriculture and everything in the area have gone for a toss. Fortunately, my parents shifted to a friend’s place.”

He added: “We are sending supplies and cash contributions because they can use the money back home. District administration has started something called the Kodava Relief Fund, and the state government is also working to repair the damage.”

Prakash Chinnappa Choundira, a Dubai-resident since 2002, said: “Since the outbreak of the floods, Coorg has received very little media attention. Small-time vernacular press has covered our plight and the Kodava Samaj in other major cities in Karnataka are working together to help.” Those interested in sending relief funds and supplies to the Kodavas in Coorg can write to volunteers on this email: teamcoorguae@gmail.com.

Donate to Kerala and Kodagu, get photoshoots and portraits in return: Here’s how

Artists around the country are coming together to render their services in exchange for donations made to the flood relief efforts.

ClickforCoorg01KF19aug2018

As Kerala and Kodagu in Karnataka reel under heavy flooding, people across the country are making an effort to volunteer, collect relief material or help in some way or the other.

Photographers and artists in Chennai, Bengaluru and other cities are pitching in too – many have joined social media campaigns asking people to donate money for the flood hit areas in return for availing their services for free.

If you look for the ‘Clicks for Kerala’, ‘Click for Coorg’ or ‘Donate for a Portrait’ tags on Instagram, you will come across several artists and profiles, promising everything from caricatures, handmade portraits, family portraits, photoshoots for couples, babies, pets and more.

‘Donate for a Portrait’ campaign

Sharmada Nagarajan, a Chennai-based graphic designer, was as distressed as anyone seeing the devastation caused by the floods in Kerala. Wanting to do something about it, she and her friend Priyadarshini, another graphic designer came up with an idea.

They created the ‘Donate for a Portrait’ where all a person needs to do to earn a caricature, watercolor or digital portrait of themselves, is donate a minimum amount of Rs 750 to Kerala CM’s relief fund. Then they can share the screenshot on social media with the artist in question, and a digital copy of the portrait will be sent to them by the end of the day.

Sharmanda and Priyadarshini
Sharmanda and Priyadarshini

“We only came up with it on Friday afternoon and put it up by evening. Initially it was just 4-5 of us, all batchmates from college who decided to do this. But within no time we got requests from other artists who wanted to join in and be part of the campaign. People from even Delhi, Mumbai and Ahemdabad showed interest,” Sharmada tells TNM.

“We are 22 people now who are making this effort and the numbers are growing as we speak,” the 23-year-old adds. “I think this is working well because when it comes to selling art itself, people are hesitant to buy it. But a portrait or an artwork of themselves is something that catches their fancy more easily.”
ClickforCoorg03KF19aug2018

ClickforCoorg04KF19aug2018

Sharmada and a few others are maintaining an online document where they are keeping track of how many people have contributed and requested portraits, who is making them, and how many of them have been made. “So far, about 60 people have sent us proof of their contributions and we have raised about Rs 70,000 through this,” she shares.

‘Click for Kerala’ and ‘Click for Coorg’ campaigns

Meanwhile in Bengaluru, a similar conversation was happening in a WhatsApp group of professional photographers in the city. Anbu Jawahar and Ankit Singh, two members of the group had done something similar to ‘Clicks for Kerala’ when the Chennai floods happened in 2015.

The idea behind these two campaigns is similar to Donate for a Portrait – except here, donors have to donate a minimum of Rs 5,000 and according to the amount, they can avail services for a photoshoot.

“We came up with this three days ago, and we decided to put up a poster on our Instagram stories. We have received messages from photographers in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and even Kerala,” shared Elvin Jacob, a 31-year-old photographer in Bengaluru.

ClickforCoorg05KF19aug2018

Sowmya Mense, another photographer who is taking part in this campaign, originally hails from Kodagu. “My aunt lost two houses in the flood. I know several other families who have been rendered homeless,” the 36-year-old says.

She put up the ‘Click for Coorg’ post on her Instagram on Friday and has already received 6 to 7 requests. “They have sent me the proof of their donation and out of the Rs 23,000 raised, Rs 10,000 I am giving to Kerala relief fund. The rest, once I collate more responses to the campaign, will be given to Coorg,” Sowmya says.

ClickforCoorg06KF19aug2018

A challenge, both Elvin and Sowmya, say is to work around their bookings for commercial shoots and include the people who have opted for shoots through the campaign. This is why they have a much more decentralized working system – each photographer can accept as many requests as they can manage and there is no centralized tally.

The participating photographers however, are hopeful that more people will come forward so they more funds can reach the affected areas of Kerala and Coorg.
