Actress-turned-politician Ramya has been splitting her time between her constituency Mandya and the Centre in Delhi, ever since she was elected to the Parliament. Also in focus, right now, is the party’s youth icon — Rahul Gandhi — who has made quite a few visits to Karnataka lately. Well, according to Ramya, the young leader’s focus is indeed on the state.
In fact, when Rahul came to Karnataka last weekend, he visited Ramya’s constituency, Mandya. “It was great when he visited. We were travelling on the left side of the road and he wanted to know what the logic in blocking even the right side of the road was. In fact, all the way from Tumkur to Mandya, we took the outer road to avoid stalling any traffic whatsoever. I was impressed, as he actually practises what he preaches,” says Ramya.
As a result of his many visits to the state, there was a clamour last month that Rahul would contest the Lok Sabha polls from Karnataka. Although Ramya dismissed this as a rumour, she said, “I would be really happy if he were to contest from Mandya, but it’s just a rumour. He has done extremely good work in Amethi and I would like to go there, see the things he has done and maybe implement a similar model here,” says Ramya.
Politics apart, Rahul apparently took some time off to experience the best that the state has to offer. Says Ramya, “He loves masala dosa and really likes Coorg (a destination we guess he must have gone to on one of his many visits to the state).”

No one made much of it when a pigeon was found dead recently in Kakkabbe village near Madikeri. But it was no ordinary bird: there was a ring on its claw which aroused the interest of KM Chinnappa, environmentalist and director of Wildlife First Trust. It bore the inscription ‘SRPC 1110 Selam-7’.
Chinnappa immediately got around to tracing the bird’s origins. Turns out, the pigeon was a visitor from the Philippines and belonged to the Santolan Racing Pigeon Club there. It was a racing pigeon and was capable of flying continuously for 1,000 miles, as per records about such birds in America.
“It’s a wonder the pigeon flew 4,500km from the Philippines to Kodagu,” says Chinnappa.
Pigeons have a special ability to return to their place of origin even after flying for days on end. But it’s possible the pigeon from the Philippines got confused and lost its bearings due to interference from cell phone towers, claims Chinnappa.
Sometimes, pigeons also fly off track while trying to escape eagles, he adds.
The ring found on the pigeon was sent for analysis to the Bombay Natural History Society through bird expert Kripakara of Mysore.

Mysore and Kodagu MP A H Vishwanath admitted to media persons, on Tuesday, that he sacrificed one sheep and a fowl at the shrine of Handikere Chowdamma, in Kachuvinahalli Reserve forest.
He has also allegedly violated law by entering the Reserve forest without permission. Range Forest Officer Devaraj said, the MP and his family had obtained oral permission to visit the shrine in the Reserve forest. “However, they were asked not to perform any pooja,” he said. While Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Shivashankar Swamy said, “Following a request from the MP, the department had made arrangements to ferry 15 members of the family, besides giving them adequate security. Permission was given on humanitarian grounds. No complaints have been received in this regard.”
Vishwanath, along with MLA H P Manjunath, was in Neralekuppe, on the fringes of the forest, in the taluk, supervising the feast, where non-vegetarian food was served. The feat had been organised for his followers and Congress party workers. People were arriving in various vehicles, including trucks, up to 4 pm and 5,000 people attended it, according to one estimate.
Surprisingly, leaders from opposition parties also savoured the food and enjoyed Vishwanath’s hospitality. JD(S) candidate in the last Assembly election Kumaraswamy, who lost against Manjunath, and BJP candidate Annaiah Nayak were prominent among the guests. Vishwanath brushed aside questions, if it was a election campaign feast. He said, “There is no politics in hosting this lunch. My wife had made a vow to the deity to make some offerings during the last Assembly elections. We are fulfilling it. We have offered pooja to the deity and sacrificed one sheep and a fowl,” he said.
Replying to a question, he said, three days back he also fulfilled a vow to Periyapattanadamma at Periyapatna. “I have see, to which goddess I have to fulfil a vow in Madikeri,” he quipped.
Hunsur town’s famous caterer Raghu had prepared the food. He said, four quintals of rice, 500 kg mutton and 700 kg chicken was used.

Model turned actress, Shubra Aiyappa is all set to make her debut in Tollywood this year. She’ll soon be seen in Nara Rohit-starrer Prathinidhi in which she’s playing the role of a journalist. While it’s not yet clear when the film is going to release, we hear that Shubra has signed yet another Telugu film.
“I’m playing Arvind Krishna’s romantic interest in my next Telugu film. It’s a romantic comedy and I’m lucky to be working with a wonderful team,” Shubra says. The film’s shooting recently began in Hyderabad and Veera Prasad is weilding the microphone for this one. “I’m playing quite a serious role in Prathinidhi and I wanted to do something different this time. I can’t talk much about the role, but I can say that it’s going to be a sweet film,” she adds.
The actress was supposed to make her debut in YVS Chowdhary’s Rey; however, she opted out of the project soon after she signed it. “That was quite unfortunate. In fact, I was happily doing modelling and TV commercials, when YVS Chowdhary saw my portfolio. I became an actor by chance when he called me for an audition. And then more people approached me after that. I’m here to stay,” she avers.
Ask her what she likes about Tollywood and Hyderabad which makes her come back again and again, she confesses, “I’m a Bangalorean and I’ve a soft corner for South Indians. What I love most about Hyderabad is its relaxed pace of life and food. Besides, people are extremely nice. I would love to do more Telugu films in future.

With its soft, rolling hills, green vistas cloaked in mist and charming houses flanked by coffee and pepper estates, Coorg is rightly called ‘Scotland of the East’.
And Dr S V Narasimhan knows the place like the back of his hand—from north (Somwarpet) to south (Kutta). And this is chiefly because of the demands of his hobby, bird watching, which he has sustained for the last 28 years, and his various other exploits in the field of conservation and wildlife that have made him a mini celebrity (he was Coorg Person of the Year 2013) in the land of the Kodavas.
Just two years shy of turning 60, Narasimhan reveals that birding happened almost by accident. “A friend of my friend kept needling me to accompany him for bird-watching. Finally, I agreed and once I went I was totally hooked,” he says.
“Also, on the same day, it so happened that I was presented with a Salim Ali book on birds and then there was no looking back,” he laughs.
Though bird watching and bird photography go hand-in-hand for most birders today, Narasimhan is content with just watching birds. Rather than a camera, it’s a binocular that he carts around. His two daughters are bird lovers too and accompany him on birding trips.
To say that he is devoted to his hobby would be putting it mildly. And here’s why—for the last 25 years or so, to commemorate India’s Wild Life Week that falls in the first week of October, Narasimhan has been sending out hand-painted cards featuring pictures of birds, butterflies and animals to a whole lot of people. “Every month, there was a small cultural function in our town, which is when the idea of giving people cards struck me. The first year I sent out 1,000 cards. My target has been 3,000 cards and the closest I came to achieving it is when I sent out 2,700 cards in one particular year,” he shares.
By any standard, it’s a mammoth undertaking and Narasimhan attempts the work in stages, by first selecting pictures of roughly 18-20 birds, animals and butterflies.
Then one outline of a particular picture is made on some 100 cards with the process getting replicated for the others as well. The painting happens in-between. The doctor is quick to point out that he may not a good artist, but a lot of love goes into each card. Recipients who acknowledge his cards are kept on his mailing list the next year as well.
His birding activities culminated in his book titled Feathered Jewels of
Coorg published by the Coorg Wildlife Society in 2004.
“It took me four and a half years to collect data for the book. I travelled to different parts of Coorg to acquaint myself with the Kodava names. The first edition was published in 2004 and the second in 2008,” he says. President of the Coorg Wildlife Society, Colonel C P Muthanna (retd) is all praise for Dr Narasimhan and his book, a bi-lingual guide (Kannada and English) to the birds of Coorg.
A show on Akashwani, in Madikeri, titled Kodagina Banadigalu had Naraimhan talk about Coorg’s rich wildlife. The reach of the show was tremendous with the programme running for 52 weeks, reveals the doctor, who says the bird with seven colours—Indian Pitta—is his favourite.
Besides birding, Narasimhan is also interested in astronomy. But with Coorg enjoying only two months of clear sky, it certainly puts a damper on this hobby. Nevertheless, he is quite happy with the knowledge gained, and explains the link between astronomy and birds.
“Birds migrate by looking at the constellations, they ignore the moon which changes every day, but rely on the stars which remain constant,” he says.
