Rs 75 lakh grant for Madikeri Dasara

Madikeri :

Karnataka government has sanctioned Rs 75 lakh for the historical Madikeri Dasara festival and Rs 25 lakh for Gonikoppal Dasara. Virajpet MLA and ex-speaker KG Bopaiah told TOI that district incharge minister HC Mahadevappa had confirmed this to him over phone.

Recently a delegation from the Madikeri Dasara committee met chief minister Siddaramaiah and Mahadevappa and submitted a memorandum seeking release of funds for the Dasara festival immediately as the buzz is that the election commission may shortly declare elections for the Madikeri city municipal council. The committee had convinced the CM that if the election was declared, the code of conduct will come in the way of release of grant.

Dasara committee working president KM Ganesh has welcomed the immediate response of the chief minister. Dasara tableaux committee president Vinod said people want the tableaux procession to start early.

City’s rising Star

“I was drawn towards acting for I always found it overwhelming and challenging. Thanks to city’s theatre repertory Rangayana, I was exposed to the world of theatre better. Being passionate about theatre, I frequently visited Rangayana to watch and also perform in shows while at college. And that helped me groom myself and my acting skills,” says the city’s rising star Sushma Nanaiah.

Art and artistes are not new to Mysore. If the city is known for its culture and rare art forms, it has even produced several talented artistes who have made names for themselves in diverse creative fields. Here is one such young and talented artiste, who has gone on to become a familiar face for many, through the television industry in Karnataka.Meet Sushma Nanaiah, a young and beautiful multifaceted artiste from Mysore who has entered the Kannada small screen industry with an aim to showcase the fineness she possesses as a performer.

Having performed in over twelve soaps in various TV channels in three years now, Sushma says she was drawn towards acting for she always found it overwhelming and challenging. To be an actress, Sushma has drifted from one realm to another. Such was the fondness she had for acting that she took to being an actress, while she could have been a microbiologist otherwise.

She recalls that it is through a theatre workshop held at city’s theatre repertory Rangayana that she got exposed to the world of theatre better and that it helped her want to try her hands in small screen.

“Being passionate about theatre, I frequently visited Rangayana to watch and also perform in shows while at college. And that helped me groom myself and my acting skills,” says the rising actress. “Like any other girl of my age, I too pursued a degree and then a master’s degree in Microbiology from the University of Mysore and started working as a data analyst at a company in Bangalore. But soon did I realise I was unhappy with what I was doing and that theatre and acting remain my first priority.”

Says Sushma, “I always thought I could concentrate more on my passion once I relocated to Bangalore; but I would hate to find myself extremely tired and stressed out after an entire day of work and travelling home from my workplace amidst messy traffic at Bangalore each day. That is when I began trying my hands in acting, finally giving upon my 9-6 office job.”

But it did not really become a mean task to Sushma since she had already proved that she is endowed with talent through her performances at various theatre shows at Mysore, Bangalore and Mumbai. She also is a trained freestyle and Bhartanatyam dancer, a singer, has even choreographed some dance programmes and anchored some TV shows. “And now, I am extremely happy with my profession. It feels wonderful when people recognise an actor by the name of her roles for it tells us how well we have impacted the minds of people through our roles and acting,” she gushes.

All set to tie the knot this coming November, Sushma says she will continue working the same way even post-wedding for her family is all supportive, adding: “I have done a few shows and have some more in the pipeline. I’ll continue doing what I am into.” “I would love to try my hands with direction in future,” the actress adds, talking of her future plans. Sushma is based at Bangalore but frequently visits Mysore as her mother resides in the city. — AN

You cannot arrive at the truth unless you eliminate the false, says James Talbot who has written a book revealing magic tricks
Magic evokes a sense of wonder in us all. We would all like to try our hand at magic tricks — nothing like a book to tell us. How to Levitate and Other Great Secrets of Magic is proceeds to do just that. The slim book makes for easy reading. It is a journey of discovery that will bring the enthusiast to truth.

“It is similar to any scientific exploration,” says author James Talbot. The tricks have all been tried out by Talbot.

One can try out the tricks as all the contraptions needed are clearly indicated in the book marketed by Coorg-based Magenta Press. The 57-page book is priced at Rs. 149. The deep thought behind the exercise Talbot says is “You cannot come to the truth unless you eliminate the false. The book was written 15 years ago and the reason I chose a Western pen name was that magic uncovered by a Westerner always gels well with most of us.”

Plans on for grand Madikeri Dasara

K M Ganesh elected unopposed as Dasara Janotsava Samithi working president.

K M Ganesh has been elected unopposed as Dasara Janotsava Samithi working president for the year 2013 and 2014.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Anurag Tiwari on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Ganesh called upon the citizens to celebrate Madikeri Dasara grandeously. “Let us impress upon the district-in-charge minister to sanction additional funds to celebrate Dasara. All the differences should be kept aside and Dasara should be celebrated with traditional fervour. The funds given to Dashamantapa is meagre. There is a need to increase it.”

Dasara Committee immediate past working committee president Rabin Devaiah and former CMC president H M Nandakumar also spoke.

Office-bearers

Other elected office-bearers are Prakash Acharya, Mahesh Jaini, T H Udaykumar, Madurai, Rajesh and Abdul Razak (vice presidents); P G Manjunath (only for 2013 celebration)( general secretary), Chummi Devaiah (treasurer), Shashikumar (honorary secretary), R B Shivakumar, Venkatesh (secretary), A K Lokesh, Pushpa Poonaccha, Savitha Rai, Ashok (joint secretary), Nanda Kumar, Robin Devaiah, V P Suresh, Sathish Pai, M B Devaia, P D Ponnappa, Chidwilas, S C Subramani, B S Mohan, Muneer Ahammed, T M Ayyappa (honorary president).

Sub committee — Culture (H T Anil), Sports (Manu Manjunath), Stage (K Pemmaiah), welcome (Kanehithlu Monappa), decoration (P M Harish), poets meet (Payapanda Shashi Somaiah). Vinod has been elected as the president of Dashamantapa President.

Audit report

Without CMC elected representatives Deputy Commissioner will function as the president
of the committee.

Speaking on the occasion, DC Anurag Tiwari said that the audit report on the celebrations should be placed before the public within three months of Dasara celebrations. It should be published in the website. The committee should work in transparency.
Confusion in term

As per Madikeri Dasara Utsav Samithi bylaw, the post of general secretary and treasurer of the committee is reserved for the CMC members. As there are no elected representatives in the CMC, there was confusion over the elected members whether they can serve for two years. As a result, the elected two posts will be only for this year’s celebration.

For the joy of sharing

Hands on approach: Ambika and Anjali / The Hindu
Hands on approach: Ambika and Anjali / The Hindu

Siblings Anjali and Ambika started their catering service, Pig Out, as a tribute to their summer vacations in Coorg

Bangalore is home to a growing number of weekend flea markets. Not only do these provide a place to pick up quirky things, indulge in good food and groove to great music, but also they provide inspiration for business ideas. Pig Out, a Coorg cuisine catering service, started by sisters Anjali and Ambika Ganapathy in 2011, is one such example.

Says Anjali: “The idea came to us at Sunday Soul Santé. Being regulars, we wanted to participate. Our father was in the Air Force and so as children we spent most of our time outside Bangalore. Summer holidays, however, were spent with grandparents and relatives in Coorg, where each meal was an occasion. With every meal there was a growing appreciation for the cuisine and tradition associated with it. So when we decided to have a stall at the Santé, food and Coorg cuisine, in particular, was an obvious choice. It’s something we love and we especially enjoy sharing the experience.”

While Ambika is a freelance filmmaker who juggles Pig Out and her film work, Anjali was working with a beer company in a marketing capacity. “After overwhelming responses at Bangalore’s flea markets, we continued our participation and took on catering orders when we had the time. Over a period of time we realised, Pig Out had a definite following. It was around December 2012 when we decided to take it on full time and there was no turning back since,” Ambika recounts.

From catering for engagements and birthday parties to corporate dos, house parties and personalised orders for one or two people, Pig Out goes all out to make bellies happy.

Stating that they were surprised to find “Pig Out was popular amongst a wide spectrum of people,” Anjali adds: “We even cater to foreigners who love their spice! The response to Pig Out is always encouraging and positive and sometimes people are surprised when they meet us perhaps because they expect us to be older.”

Through Pig Out, the sisters have had the opportunity to connect with people and dig deeper into their own roots.

“We love that our immediate and extended family and friends take an active part in all food tasting sessions and contribute to recipes. But mostly, we love that Pig Out has grown to have its own personality, and it’s given us a platform to learn, experiment and take chances,” Anjali says.

Ask them how challenging it is to run a setup like this and Ambika responds: “Our approach has always been to ‘keep it simple’. So far it’s been fairly straight-forward and easy as we are a small unit. Our approach is hands on. We do the research and food experiments ourselves. We have trained cooks whom we use when it comes to making large quantities of food.”

That said, she adds: “So far logistics would have to be the only challenge we face on a regular basis. We have had to turn down orders in Whitefield, Malleshwaram, Jaynagar, etc, due to the distance. We are currently working on a solution for this.”

Regarding their future plans, Anjali informs: “At present our main focus would be to get as many people as we can to try our food and eventually have Pig Out and Coorg food be synonymous with each other.”

The latest development on this front is their association with the Westin Hotel in Pune, where the duo was invited to showcase their food at a 10-day festival.

Harangi garden to open on August 15

Harangi Reservoir, one of the most important water bodies in the Cauvery basin, will soon get a garden modelled after the Brindavan Gardens of Krishna Raja Sagar Dam, thereby fulfilling a dream that has been pending for decades.

Bommai also came down to Harangi Dam and laid the foundation stone for the about `4 crore project.

MLA M P Appachu Ranjan told Express that the project was one of his major achievements as a minister in the BJP government.

Rain brings festive atmosphere to Coorg

Kodagu is inundated after recent downpours. - DNA
Kodagu is inundated after recent downpours. – DNA

The copious amount of rain that areas near Bhagamandala in Kodagu received in the recent past has pronounced good news for the people of Bangalore and Mysore. The rainwater has started filling up the Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir in Srirangapatna taluk in Mandya district, which is the main source of water for Bangalore and Mysore.

As a result of the heavy rain on the hills of Madikeri, the Bhagamandala-Talacauvery area, which resembled a drought stricken place a few days back, filled people with joy, despite the road from Bhagamandala-Napoklu being inundated, throwing life out of gear.

People did not mind their children missing classes and ignored the absence of the workers in their fields and plantations, and chose to just sit back and enjoy the rain. Men settled down with their bottle of rum while ladies were in a holiday mood and many of them cooked their signature dish ‘Pandi Curry’(pork chops) and ‘Pundi’ (rice dumplings) for their family.

“This is the time to be happy. Kodagu is looked upon by the people in the Cauvery basin as the provider of life. We were sad when there was less water in Cauvery. But, for the past few weeks, the elders were worried about the drought like situation in Bhagamandala and the entire river course of Cauvery and the dry situation at the KRS,” said Prasad Nanjappa, a resident of Madikeri town.

Confirming copious inflow of water into the reservoir, executive engineer of the KRS facility told dna that the inflow improved tremendously to reach 4,300 cusecs per day, which subsequently increased the water level from 65 feet in the past week to 80.16 feet.

“With the rains in Kodagu district intensifying, we expect more water to flow into the KRS reservoir in the next few days,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Kodagu district administration has declared holidays for schools and colleges for the next two days.
