Rain threat looms over Rally of Coorg

The Indian National Rally Championship returns to Kodagu after a gap of five years for the Rally of Coorg, but with thunderstorms lashing the region, the likelihood of the rally being run on Saturday and Sunday without any glitches appears unlikely.

The signs were ominous as the race stewards, who ran Friday’s reconnaissance under torrential rain, cancelled the 9.5-km long Woshully stage, meaning the two other Special Stages — Polibetta (6 kms) and Yemmegondi (13.40 kms) — will be run four times as opposed to running it three times as was originally planned. The Super Special Stage (Triple S) will be held on a 2.7-km enclosed circuit in Polibetta on Sunday.

However, if the stages take a beating from the rain on Friday night as well, then the stewards, who are expected to check the route at 6.00 am on Saturday, will be forced to cancel the Motorsports Inc-run event as well. “The first stage — after 3.2 kms — was not motorable. It was too rough and tight. Also, in case of emergency, it would be difficult even for an ambulance to reach the spot. Hence, we recommended the cancellation of the stage,” chief steward Zayn Khan said.

The rally will have three classes — Indian Rally Championship for Group A (modified) 4-wheel drive, Indian National Rally Championship for Group N (unmodified) cars (2000cc and 1600cc) and the Junior Indian National Rally Championship for drivers below 23 years of age.

If the rally does get the ‘go’ signal from the stewards, Mysore’s Lohitt Urs (navigator BS Sujith Kumar), who won the first round of the INRC held at the Siddhlaghatta track last month, will have his eyes set on extending his lead in the Group N class.

However, the prime attraction will once again be Zuhin A (navigator Musa Sherif), who is the lone entry in the Indian Rally Championship class driving a Group ‘A’ Subaru Impreza.
Even if the duo did disappoint during the Special Stages in the K-1000, they captivated the crowd with a stunning drive in the Triple S, and can once again be expected to put on a show.

Hockey stars make it a special day for kids

A Sunday to remember

October 14 will remain a special Sunday for the 100-odd kids of the Jude Felix Hockey Academy.

Unlike the usual Sundays which involves training, a game of hockey and breakfast at their home-cum-school — St Mary’s Orphanage — the kids were in for a treat when a clutch of former State hockey players and some internationals chose to light up a gloomy morning.

Former India captain Arjun Halappa, VS Vinaya and current India forward SV Sunil and a few other former State players were part of the ‘Rest of Karnataka’ squad, challenging the JFHA academy kids in a 20-minute exhibition match.
“I am extremely happy to be associated with this noble cause,” said Halappa as kids scrambled to get his autograph. “It is such a delight to see the enthusiasm in the kids when they play hockey and I hope some of them get to play for the country some time.”

“This is my first time here and I am looking forward to more such events,” said Sunil, who was impressed by the talent of the kids. “What Jude has done with these kids is spectacular.”

Thrilled with the response, especially from Halappa, Sunil and former India goal-keeper Ashish Ballal who made it in short notice, former India captain Felix said the growth of the academy has vindicated his decision to start it. “Over the last four years, we’ve really made strong improvements. In terms of numbers, we’ve got nearly 100 kids now training almost everyday.

“Apart from that, there is talent here too. Joshua Arun Kumar and Arvind were inducted into the Sports Authority of India (SAI) earlier this year and Rajendra made the cut for the Karnataka sub-junior team. The JFHA wards representing Maria Niketan school clinched the U-16 District and Taluk-level tournaments while the U-14 team emerged victorious in the prestigious Allan MacBride inter-school tournament. That shows the kids here are very serious and we are here not just for charity but to take the kids to the next level.”

Meanwhile, the JFHA inter-school tournament will be played at the KSHA stadium from Nov 7-10. For the second year in row, the event will be played under floodlights and eight teams are expected to participate.

Tata Coffee: Standalone business is finding strength, accumulate

Investment rationale:

Standalone business is finding strength in rising commodity prices & instant coffee business.

– There is an increase in demand for Robusta bean globally. Demand for Robusta coffee is on a rise as demand from roasters globally increases in a bid to cut costs for blends. Demand from emerging markets as well as increasing demand for instant coffee are also key growth drivers for Robusta bean demand. ~ 75% of Tata Coffee’s produce is Robusta coffee which it exports globally. YTD Robusta prices are up by 6% vs. a 20% fall in Arabica prices. In India the current crop has suffered on account of weather and prices of Robusta have moved up by ~25-30%YTD.

– The company is taking initiatives to increase its Arabica production. The company has attained a series of quality certification and in turn increased sales focus of the same to command a premium in the market.

– Pepper & Tea, the other 2 major plantation crops for Tata coffee, are also witnessing higher realizations on the back of weather vagaries. Prices for orthodox tea are higher by 15% for the current fiscal while pepper prices are up ~40%.Tata coffee is the largest single producer of black & white pepper in India.

– Demand for soluble coffee is on a rise globally. Demand is stemming from emerging markets. Tata Coffee is investing Rs55 crs. in setting up a premium freeze dried plant with focus on new markets to drive growth.

– The tie-up with Starbucks to provide beans for their India operations to support growth in the future.

Eight o’ Clock( company’s branded whole bean brand in the US) business performance to improve on the back of launch of single serve cups & falling prices ofArabica Beans.

– The recent tie-up with Green Mountain Roasters to launch Eight o’ Clock coffee (also Good Earth & Tetley) in single serve K- cups to drive volumes.

– Cost savings on account of correction in international Arabica prices: Prices of Columbian Mild beans have corrected ~35% from the peak price and 21%YTD to 202 cents/lbs.

Valuation: The company’s coffee plantation business set to enjoy better realizations on the back of sustainable demand from new markets. Weather vagaries have reduced crop and increased realizations for other plantation crops – pepper & tea. Way2wealth beleives that there will be significant improvement in profitability of Eight o’ Clock coffee as Arabica prices correct substantially. The stock was significantly re-rated during the period of 2010 to 2012. At the CMP of Rs1012 the stock currently trades at 17 x its FY13 estimated EPS of Rs59.7. Accumulate

Dasara Darshan gives opportunity to 10,000 villagers to see tourist places

Mysore:
The authorities are giving an opportunity for rural people to visit tourist spots like Mysore Palace, Mysore Zoo and Chamundi Hills during Dasara all for just Rs 50.

Dasara Darshan, a novel initiative launched by former district minister Shobha Karandlaje four years ago, aims at bringing around 10,500 villagers from Mysore, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Hassan and Kodagu districts
. The initiative is to enable them to see the city in all its grandeur during the festive season. The initiative has been a hit with many villagers, who have benefitted from Darshan, appreciating the initiative.

Under the project, people from 29 taluks in these districts will be brought to Mysore for sight-seeing and then be taken back to their places in KSRTC buses between October 17 and 22.

KSRTC (urban) divisional controller M N Srinivas, secretary of Dasara Darshan sub-committee, told reporters that they have met the tahsildars of the respective taluks. They have been assigned the task of selecting the villagers. “We are reserving 200 buses for the project. This arrangement will, however, not affect the bus services,” he added.

Committee chief H M Sunandaraj said: “I have requested the district minister to provide additional 100 buses to bring rural women to Mysore.” Vice-president Kirankumar said around 12-15 villagers will be selected from each gram panchayat.

The committee has been given Rs 15 lakh for Dasara Darshan. In addition to this, it will raise Rs 5.25 lakh from tickets, which will be utilized for arranging transport. Srinivas said one official will be deployed in each bus to safely ferry the villagers to Mysore and back. They will be picked-up at their respective taluk headquarters. “We are also reserving medical staff as a precautionary measure,” the DC stated.

DOC CREATES AWARENESS ON WILDLIFE CARDS

Mysore, Oct.7
People who love environment, find a way to preserve it and also create awareness among the laymen on conserving it. Many take out rallies, conduct environment-related programmes, plant saplings and adopt animals. However, a family physician of Virajpet, Kodagu district, has found a unique way of bringing nature closer to mankind — he sends free hand-painted postcards containing wildlife messages to public as part of Wildlife Week.

An avid birder and nature lover, Dr. S.V. Narasimhan has been sending such postcards since 28 years. Author of ‘Feathered Jewels of Coorg,’ a fieldguide to 310 species of birds found in Kodagu, he has been spreading wildlife conservation messages through his unique hand-painted wildlife message cards.

This year, his message is ‘Life on Earth – a Large Extended Family.’ Till now, he has made 56,590 cards with 1,270 this year. About 8,340 people have received his cards all these years.

His Special Wildlife Messenger of this year is the Indian Pitta (Pitta brachyura), a medium-sized, stubby-tailed bird that is mostly seen on the floor of forests or under dense undergrowth, foraging on insects in leaf litter and often more easily detected by their calls. Indian Pittas breed mainly in the Himalayan foothills from northern Pakistan in the west and possibly up to Sikkim in the east. They also breed in the hills of central India and in the northern Western Ghats. They migrate to all parts of peninsular India and Sri Lanka in winter. Their seasonal movements are associated with the monsoon rains. For more such wildlife cards, visit http://drsvnarasimhan.blogspot.com

Parliamentary panel recommends extending job scheme to overcome labour shortage

A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce has recommended extension of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) to plantations to overcome labour shortage in the sector, particularly in Karnataka.

The 31-member panel, headed by Shanta Kumar, in its report titled ‘Performance of Plantation Sector – Tea and Coffee Industry’, suggested to the Union Commerce Ministry to extend the job scheme to coffee plantations to take up various works such as construction of water tanks, groundwater and soil management.

Coffee is a highly labour-intensive crop requiring about 400 man days per hectare per year for Arabica and 300 man days per hectare per year for Robusta.

The panel said, “There has been a serious shortage of workers in plantation areas due to employment opportunities generated by MNREGA and due to migration of work
