M.C. Nanaiah re-emerges from political hibernation

His entry into the Legislative Council is considered a shot in the arm for Kodagu

Nanaiah is entering the Council for the fifth time

He was a Minister in the J.H. Patel Cabinet

Madikeri:

It might not be a familiar story for Meriyanda Chengappa Nanaiah, popularly called as MCN, to re-enter the Legislative Council, as is for the people of Kodagu. Even a bete noire of Mr. Nanaiah would agree that he is a political asset to the district. Mr. Nanaiah’s presence in the Upper House is sure to lend an aura of dignity, thanks to his political astuteness and sagacity, many feel.

Mr. Nanaiah is entering the Council for the fifth time. His maiden entry was in the year 1985 when he represented the Kranti Ranga. It stood for just one year before he re-entered as a full fledged member in 1986 as member of the Janata Party. His stint in the Council from 1989 to 1994 saw a glib-tongued Nanaiah emerge as a powerful politician. He became a Minister by virtue of being the MLC from 1994 to 1999 in the J.H. Patel Government. The new assignment as Janata Dal (Secular) candidate has just begun. “My best moment in life was getting elected as the Leader of Opposition in the Council in 1989,” Mr. Nanaiah said. He continued in that post till 1994.

Mr. Nanaiah recalled that his worst moment was tendering resignation as Law Minister. He was pained at the developments that took place after the late Chief Minister J.H. Patel parted ways and aligned with the National Democratic Alliance Government, he stated. Mr. Nanaiah has his roots in the cooperative field, which had catapulted him to politics. He was elected president of the Cardamom Cooperative Society here in 1962, which was then a powerful body in Kodagu.

His first taste of election came in the year 1967 when he contested and lost as an independent against the former Minister the late A.P. Appanna, who was the Congress candidate from Madikeri constituency. “Though I had a leaning towards the Left parties, I did not associate with them,” Mr. Nanaiah said. He said that he was a great fan of the late Devaraj Urs. He contested as Congress candidate from Madikeri in 1978, defeating A.K.Subbaiah, another firebrand politician. Subsequently, he became a Minister, albeit for a short period.

Before that Mr. Nanaiah had served as president of the Madikeri City Municipal Council (then a town municipal council) from 1970 to 1974.

His stint as an advocate, both handling civil and criminal cases, continued undisturbed in between. He was chairman of the Karnataka State Cooperative Marketing Federation in 1980. Mr. Nanaiah went on to win national award for his contributions to the cooperative field.

Mr. Nanaiah’s tenure as the Kodagu district in-charge from 1994-99, saw a spurt in development activities in the district. His political clout and proximity to the late J.H. Patel stood him in good stead in the party. Now, political hibernation for Mr. Nanaiah is over and he is back in politics. “Nanaiah will act as voice of Kodagu district”, said Matanda C. Monnappa, president of the Akhila Kodava Samaja, Virajpet.

“We needed a seasoned campaigner such as Nanaiah to speak on behalf of Kodagu,” said Muneer Ahmad, councillor of the Madikeri CMC. Indeed, Mr. Nanaiah has come out of nearly eight years of ‘political wilderness.”

Mr. Nanaiah told The Hindu that the Janata Dal (Secular) base has been eroded due to the ego clash of party leaders. It had lost because it could not gear up its machineries to face elections. He exudes confidence, saying there is sufficient political space for the party to grow in the State.

‘Save Kodagu, Save Cauvery’ movement gains momentum

Protest planned against ‘ecologically destructive’ projects

Members of nearly 30 organisations have launched a “Save Kodagu, Save Cauvery” campaign to protest the ecologically destructive projects sanctioned in Kodagu on Saturday.

The activists will stage a protest in Kutta on the Karnataka-Kerala border to register their opposition to the 400 kV power line project passing through the district, the proposed railway line – one linking with Mysuru and the other with Thalassery in Kerala — besides linking of NHs cutting across the district.

“Most of these projects are not required for Kodagu which is an environmentally fragile and sensitive region and entails large scale felling of trees,” said Col. C.P. Muthanna of the Coorg Wildlife Society, which is also a part of the campaign. He estimated that lakhs of trees were at the risk of being felled to pave way for the projects based on the broad estimates of land acquisition.

“Each hectare of land in Kodagu supports nearly 350 fully grown and mature trees and one shudders to think of the extent of tree-felling that will take place given the vast tract of land that will be acquired,” he said.

The thrust of the campaign is to highlight the imperatives of conserving the catchment area of the Cauvery.

Rampant destruction of environment is evident in the depleting rainfall over the years and it is time to rethink such destructive development, according to activists. The railway line for Kodagu is being touted as an important link providing connectivity to the coffee market across India. But there is little value addition to coffee cultivated in Chikkamagaluru because of rail connectivity in Hassan, he said. The Mysuru-Kushalngar-Madikeri railway line has no real benefit to the district but could open up a can of new problems, including unbridled urbanisation of an environmentally sensitive region, he added.

The planned demonstration has received support from various quarters cutting across geographical region and the organisers have received endorsement from like-minded individuals and groups on social media groups as well.

The activists will congregate at Ponnampet and then go to Kutta where they will go in a procession at 11 a.m. and demonstrate near the check post on the border.

Cauvery Tussle: Who’s siding with the Gods ?

As Tamil Nadu gets set to mark rare event, devotees in the state seek a share

When it comes to Cauvery, nothing is simple between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. This time, it’s about the puja being offered to the river on the occasion of Cauvery Pushkara, an event that is marked once in 12 years. The religious ceremony is a puja offered to the river aimed at plentiful rainfall and prosperity. While the Karnataka government has not made any plans to celebrate the occasion, Tamil Nadu, at the behest of Kanchi Mutt, has decided to hold elaborate rituals at three places.

The Pushkara tradition is associated with 12 major rivers of India, and this year it is the Cauvery’s turn.

According to Vidwan Ganesh Galapati, the Kanchi mutt has not only written to the Tamil Nadu government but also planned major functions at several places, including Hogenakkal, Nerur, Trichy, Thiruvaiyaru, Kumbakonam, and Mayiladuthurai. While the rituals will be held between September 12 and 23, the pundits in Karnataka are not happy with the fact that there has been no communication from the Religious Endowment department of Karnataka on the celebrations.

“The government did Parjanya japa in the first week of June and similarly it should also take up Pushkara ritual that has come after 12 years. Cauvery has been the backbone for both states. We all know what it would mean to not have any water in the river. As the purpose of the ritual is to pray for bounteous rains and prosperity of the state, the government must initiate a programme to take up the rituals either at Talacauvery or T Narasipur,” said Galapati. Bhagandeshwara Temple’s executive officer Jagadish Kumar confirmed that, so far, no such orders have been issued. “If the government issues any such order, we will arrange for such rituals.”

About the Puja

Vidwan Ganesh Galapati explains: “Each river is associated with a zodiac sign. Depending on where Jupiter is positioned during the cycle, the puja is done. This time, Jupiter will enter Libra (Tula) sign from Virgo (Kanya) by first week of September, which will be regarded as Pushkara Kala. The rituals will not only purify the river but also bring prosperity,” he explained.

Rohan Bopanna on the road to Wimbledon

FRESH from ending a 14-year wait for his maiden Grand Slam title, Rohan Bopanna is eyeing up more major success at Wimbledon next week.

The Indian ace fulfilled a lifetime ambition when he won the mixed doubles title with Gabriela Dabrwoski at the French Open this month and hopes the momentum will continue into SW19.

“Never give up on your dreams. That is something which stands out (from this win),” the 37-year-old said on the eve of the event.

“Age is only a number. You can’t set a timeline (for achievements). As long as you believe in yourself and keep working hard, nothing can stop you.

“I worked towards my goal every single day. I am grateful that my team also put in the effort. Although tennis is an individual sport, everyone has contributed.

“Huge congratulations to Gabriela for becoming the first Canadian woman to win a Grand Slam. It helps to share a sense of camaraderie with your partner. I will partner her at Wimbledon also.”

With that triumph in Paris, Bopanna became only the fourth Indian in history – after Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza – to win a slam.

The 16-time ATP tour winner’s previous best finish at Wimbledon has been two semi-final finishes in the men’s doubles (2013 and 2015). In the mixed event, Bopanna has only reached the last eight once, and that was four years ago.

Bopanna, for so long a national stalwart on the Davis Cup stage, reckons a change in self-belief is one of the main reason for him pl-aying “the best tennis of his career”.

He explained: “At the start of the year, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and I won the Chennai Open. Th-en, Marcin (Matkowski) and I reached the Dubai Open final. In April, Pablo Cuevas and I took the Monte Carlo Masters title. So I’ve played with three different players this year.

“I’ve had to adapt to their styles and figure out a way to use our combined strengths to get good results. This is the main reason why I feel that I’m now playing the best tennis of my career. Every time I step on to the court, I feel like I can win.

“This level of confidence is something new. I have never given up on anything – this is my strength. I constantly keep doing the right things, irrespective of the result. When I was a junior, I lost a lot of tournaments in the early rounds. I wasn’t discouraged, I just continued to work hard.

“I carried this same attitude into my professional career. I don’t have any regrets about not winning a Grand Slam title for the first 14 years of my career. The things I’ve learnt has made me a better player.

“I played Queens with Ivan Dodig, as Pablo was not available. Pablo and I will team up for Eastbourne and Wimbledon. Our goal is to try and qualify for the year-end London Masters.”

Bopanna and Croatian team mate Dodig reached the last four of the Aegon Championships last weekend, losing to French duo Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasseli 4-6, 5-7.

As well as focusing on his own goals, Bopanna is also doing his bit to help the next generation of talent come through an often maligned tennis system in India.

“To get singles champions, we need to have a system in place at the grassroots level. We have very limited support from the Federation (AITA) or corporates. We need that system to compete with European standards. We still have a long way to go,” he said.

“I am also bringing a couple of coaches (Britain’s Aubrey Barrett and Serbia’s Dragan Bukumirovic) to my academy in Bangalore from outside. They will be here for a year and help these kids. I tell the players if they go, go for a year not for a month or so.

“In a month it does not really help improve much. That’s why I am bringing these coaches; let’s hope the kids make good use of this opportunity”.
