Indian women lift Asian Squash title; men falter against Pak

In the women’s final, Joshna Chinnappa waged a grim battle against world number 16 Joey Chan and Dipika Pallikal, against world number seven Annie Au to seal the deal in India’s favour. File photo: V. Ganesan. / The Hindu
Indian women squash team today created history by winning its maiden Asian title by defeating top seed Hong Kong 2-0 in the final in Kuwait.

The men’s team, however, went down 0-2 against Pakistan in the summit clash in the 16th Asian Team Squash Championship.

In the women’s final, Joshna Chinnappa, ranked 71st in the world, waged a grim battle against world number 16 Joey Chan before winning 11-3 11-8 8-11 11-8 in 38 minutes to put India 1-0 ahead.

Dipika Pallikal, ranked 14th, then complemented the superb show by her compatriot, winning 11-8 12-10 11-8 against world number seven Annie Au in 32 minutes to seal the issue in India’s favour.

India’s best performance in the women’s team championship was a silver medal at the last championship held in 2010 in Chennai.

Unperturbed by the difference in rankings, Joshna stamped her class over Chan right from the beginning. She took advantage of the fact that the day before, her opponent had to endure five hard games against her Malaysian counterpart Delia Arnold.

Joshna’s aggressive play, laced with delicate drops and deception, was simply too much for Chan to handle as she dropped the first game 11-2 in less than 10 minutes.

Joshna kept her composure to keep at bay an aggressive Chan in the second game. The Hong Kong racqueter seemed to be warming up in the third game and her shots were more effective as she had the Indian scurrying around the court.

Unaffected by the loss of third game, Joshna came back with a vengeance and wrapped up the fourth game and match to give India the much needed first point.

Dipika went in next against world number six Annie.

Dipika had never beaten Annie earlier but that did not deter her determination.

Dipika’s aggression paid dividends against Annie, who is renowned for a steady lob and drop game. The Indian kept the pressure on her opponent throughout the match with her aggressive play and characteristic finishing shots.

Annie made a gallant fightback in the third game, but Dipika held her nerves to claw back from 4-7, winning six straight points to help India collect their first ever Asian senior women’s title.

The Indian men’s team, however, faltered at the last hurdle against arch rivals Pakistan.

National champion Saurav Ghosal squandered a 2-0 advantage and went down in five games to Pakistan’s number one Farhan Mehboob in the first singles.

The script did not change in the second singles as Siddharth Suchde lost to Farhan Zaman in five games.

The India’s men’s team equalled its silver-winning performance in the team championship in the inaugural edition of the tournament held in 1981 in Karachi.

The Results (finals):

Women: Joshna Chinnappa bt Joey Chan 11-3 11-8 8-11 11-5 (32 min)

Dipika Pallikal bt Annie Au 11-8 12-10 11-8 (37min).

Men: Farhan Mehboob bt Saurav Ghosal 10-12 6-11 11-7 11-6 11-9.

Farhan Zaman bt Siddharth Suchde 11-7 11-6 11-13 7-11 11-9.

Soles can create sisters

What made the holiday pictures flaunted on Facebook by Chondamma Cariappa different was that they featured shoes! Each time Chondamma took a trip to a new destination, she would put up fascinating pictures of shoes she came across during her travels.

Characteristically, this would kick off lengthy discussions on the details of the pair on show between friends. So, last September Chondamma reinvented her passion: she created a space for women who want to share their best finds with others.

Chondamma’s blog, which is aptly named the sole sisters, introduces itself with ‘You walk in wearing a nice pair of shoes and somewhere in the room a woman wonders ‘where did she get it from?’ What makes the blog an interesting browse is its pictures, which aren’t snapped by Chondamma but by women across the world. “It began with my friends but within a month the word spread like a wild fire and women from different parts of India and later from across the world started sending in the pictures of shoes that took their fancy. Till now I would receive about ten pictures a day,” says thirty-two-year-old Chondamma, who is a creative art director in a Mumbai-based advertising firm. On sole sisters, you will see beautifully shot pictures of women flaunting cheaply-priced slip ons from the streets of Jaipur or Lokhandwala to stilettoes bought from an upmarket shoe store in London to a funky pair of sandals picked from a store quietly hidden in an unexplored market of your city.

“I am not a brand obsessed person. In fact, my favourites are kohlapuri chappals which come in many colours. I pick up shoes which look interesting,” says Chondamma, who is born and brought in Bangalore. The blog also shares details of each pair of shoes like the name and the location of the woman who has mailed the picture, the store or the market from where the shoes are bought and the price.

This August, Chondamma organised a party for the sole sisters in Mumbai. It was called a ‘Bootleggers Party’ where all the like minded women turned up wearing boots. “The idea popped up when I read the comment on a photo of a woman from Mumbai that said: “Where in Mumbai do you get to wear boots?” Chondamma was pleasantly surprised that almost 50 women showed up to the party.

Nowadays Chondamma is busy with her next big project which is a website for shoe lovers. It will have a review section, contests and celeb section. “My job in advertising pays the bills. My blog and the upcoming website are my passion. May be in future I will have my own brand of shoes,” laughs Chondamma.

Five Indian shuttlers qualify for London Games

New Delhi, May 3
For the first time in Olympics, Indian badminton will see a record participation from five players in four different categories.

According to the new world rankings released Thursday, Saina Nehwal, Parupalli Kashyap, Jwala Gutta, Ashwini Ponnappa and V. Diju made the cut.

While Saina qualified on the basis of her superior ranking of World No.5, Kashyap qualified after he qualified for the semi-final of the India Open Super Series here last week, which was the last event in the qualification period.

Kashyap’s semifinal appearance propelled him by six spots to No. 24, which made him the highest ranked Indian ahead of Jayaram.

For the first time since the introduction of the sport in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Indians also qualified in mixed and women’s doubles.

Jwala and Ashwini, who won the Commonwealth Games women’s doubles title in 2010, jumped four spots over the last week to reach World No. 16 and it was enough for them to book their London berth.

Jwala and Diju, the country’s top mixed doubles pair, also booked their ticket to London as they are ranked No. 15.

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Vimal Kumar and Dipankar Bhattacharjee got an entry in men’s doubles category since they bagged entry in the singles event as well.

Meat matters: London restaurants gear up for ‘nose-to-tail’ fortnight

Chefs aim to prevent good food going to waste by serving up offal and other rare meat cuts during the ‘nose to tail’ fortnight organised by Sustain

A celebration of un-loved cuts of meat will take place in restaurants across London during May’s ‘Nose to Tail Fortnight’ as part of a campaign to encourage less waste and more thoughtfulness when it comes to the meat industry.

The event has been organised by the Ethical Eats catering network and will see a host of specials go on the menus of participating restaurants featuring offal and other underused parts of the animal.

Over 30 restaurants across the capital are currently signed up, including Mason restaurant in Fulham. Head chef, Alan Stewart, says the campaign has an important message, ‘It’s important to have respect for your ingredients, especially meat,’ he says, ‘if you’re going to kill an animal you have to use as much of it as possible and ensure there’s no unnecessary wastage. As lamb is in season, we’re serving lamb sweetbreads with pearl barley and wild garlic as a starter, and turning the leg meat into a confit, which we serve braised shoulder, roast loin and crispy breast for a main course.’

Other chefs backing the fortnight include Christophe Charbonnet and John Batho, from The People’s Supermarket in Camden. ‘Christophe is never happier than when he’s hacking up a pig’s head,’ says John Batho, ‘so we’re really keen to get involved in this event. We are very tuned in to keeping food waste to a minimum, and already cook dishes such as chicken liver pâté, which sells out faster than we can make it, and slow-braised neck of pork, so it is perfect for us.’

At the launch day back in March, a butchery and workshop gave some insight as to what customers can expect. They included an ‘ox heart burger’ (pictured below) produced by Cristiano Meneghin from Tongue n’ Cheek restaurant, and ‘Coorg style pork’ from Palash Mitra of the Cinnamon Club.

‘The nose-to-tail campaign helps chefs to think about meat in a more complete way, encourages them to learn the necessary butchery and cooking skills, and prompts them to use the whole animal so that less food is wasted,’ said Duncan O’Brien from Sustain; the alliance for better food and farming, who is coordinating the campaign. ‘We’re here to give advice on suppliers, butchers, animal welfare, and can even offer some recipe inspiration, to help restaurants make it happen.’

Statistics compiled by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs suggest that the UK wasted 7 million tonnes of food in 2009. Globally around a third of food produced for human consumption is wasted.

A recent survey by Jellied Eel magazine suggests consumers are not as picky about their meat as they are often portrayed. The results showed half of Londoners polled had brought offal, most commonly liver, kidneys and black pudding. But over 60 per cent had never eaten offal in a restaurant, despite nearly half those question saying they would buy it, if it appeared on restaurant menus more frequently.

‘Exploring different foods and cuts makes eating that much more interesting,’ continues O’Brien. ‘Everybody also hates to see good food go to waste, and we know nose-to-tail eating makes more sense. Through this campaign, we’d love to reintroduce Londoners to cuts of meat and dishes that their grandparents loved to eat, and top chefs to the vast array of delicious recipes that use the whole animal, from nose to tail.’

Nose-to-Tail fortnight runs from 30th April for two weeks until the 14th May. An online map is available on the Ethical Eats website to help guide customers to participating restaurants. Patrons are also being encouraged to tweet photos of their meals and report back any taste revelations and new favourites.

Sticking with it

Dhruv Mullick’s only agenda is to bet on sporting talent that is off the beaten track. Inspired by the celluloid story Jerry Maguire, city-based Dhruv has set his sights on the Indian hockey team. A sports entrepreneur, Dhruv is building the brands of two promising hockey players — Raghunath and SK Uthappa just before the Olympics season heats up.

“My idea is to get hockey to a platform where these fantastic players are identified by even school kids. To build brands which can compete with leading cricketers’ brands. But this is just the beginning and we are taking baby steps,” says the entrepreneur. With the London Olympics fast approaching, Dhruv thought this was the right time to build a glamorous image of a much neglected sport. “Raghunath is a typical Kodava lad. His brutal strength as a drag-flicker and commitment to the sport makes him the perfect poster boy of the team. While Uthappa’s talent and the coach’s (Michael Nobb) high ranking, makes him a bankable player. These traits make them brands in themselves,” says Dhruv.

But the going hasn’t been easy. “It is extremely difficult in a cricket-crazy nation to sell non-cricket sports. But the tougher the challenge, the better it gets. The only focus now is to get them as much exposure as possible before the Olympics,” says the shrewd marketing professional. Dhruv who has a BA honours in international business and economics, has trained as a sports brand manager under big names of the Indian sports arena. But his most memorable experience was with cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar. “The opportunity to work for him and interact with him, is something that I cherish even to this day,” says Dhruv.

Though hockey is his favourite sport, he cannot hide his love for cricket. Not just for school teams, he also managed to play the first cricket season at the university in London. “I played for Regents College during 2004 just for the first season,” he reminisces, adding, “I have a Sunday cricket club with friends. I also play a bit of hockey. But my skills lie off the field,” says Dhruv.

His plan ahead is to ensure that both Raghunath and Uthappa’s brands take off in a big way. The smart entrepreneur concludes by remembering his favourite line from Jerry Maguire, “Show me the money.” And we do hope that hockey as a sport can do that.

Madikeri: Helium Balloon Launched to Keep Tabs on Weather Pattern in Coffeeland

Madikeri:
The Kodagu Technology Users’ Association, in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched a ‘Sonda’ weather balloon into the open sky on Thursday, April 19 to monitor weather.

The balloon was released by IAS officer and Coffee Board chairman Jawaid Akhtar at Garagandur near Madapur in northern Kodagu. He said the coffee planters in Kodagu so far faced hardships because of changes in weather. With a view to avoid them, and with ISRO collaboration, this unit had been set up. Feedback received from this unit would be useful for the coffee-growers to keep track of the vagaries of weather and plan their agricultural activities, he said.

Akhtar further said that subsidies for coffee-growers had been announced under the 12th five-year plan and assured that the Coffee Board was committed to protecting the interest of the coffee planters.

Kodagu Technology Users’ Association (KTUA) secretary M B Bopanna said that weather information centres had been set up in 21 points in the district. Another 10 were being planned to be opened soon. Launching of each balloon would cost Rs 4,000, he said. Besides reporting the weather conditions at different points in the district, the balloon unit would record the rainfall, direction of the wind, temperature and humidity, water resources and the like.

The unit will rise to an altitude of 32 kms and will, every three minutes, transmit the information to the ISRO centre in Ahmedabad, said Bopanna.

KTUA president Kitty Devaiah, vice president Bose Mandanna and joint secretary Subbaiah provided a variety of information about the weather balloon. ISRO adviser Dr Das, another former IAS officer hailing from Kodagu Rathi Vinay Jha and others were present.

The 21 points of weather monitoring: D Chennamma PU College – Madapur, Coovercolly Estate – Belur, Kaukudi Estate, Durgadevi Estate – Hattihole, Lakshmi Estate – Kanchanakolli, Talacauvery, Ishwar temple – Napoklu, Kattimadu Estate – Margodu, Nakoor Estate – Sunticoppa, Coffee Research Centre – Chettalli, Elk Hill Estate – Siddapur, panchayat office – Maldare, Tata Coffee Estate – Pollibetta, Chennangolli Estate – Devarapura, Nittoor Estate – Nittoor, Sukalia Estate – Kutta, Forest College – Ponnampet, Government Primary School – V Badaga, Dental College – VIrajpet, Ram Prasad Estate – Palangala and Coffee Growers’ Association – Madikeri.

The balloon launching could have taken place a few days earlier, but the requisite permission was yet to be received from the Mangalore airport.

Vice president of KTUA Bose Mandanna, also a former vice president of the Coffee Board said,“It is mandatory for us to get permission from nearby airports to flow the balloon. We have got permission from the district administration and Airports Authority of India.”

Speaking to our Mangalore bureau, Mangalore airport director M R Vasudeva confirmed that the permission had since been given.

Bose Mandanna futher said that based on the data planters could decide if they could wait for the rain or could use the sprinklers. Irrigating an acre of land is estimated to require a lakh litre of water. Almost as a rule, all coffee-growing areas in the state have been facing power shortage, planters have to use diesel to use sprinklers.
