Biddu: From making music to penning stories

BidduKF19jun2014
Book title: The Abundance of Nothing

Author: Biddu

Publisher: Times Group Books

Pages: 304

Biddu ventured into Bollywood with the sensational composition ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ for ‘Qurbani’ and popularised Indie-pop in India with another best-selling album, ‘Disco Deewane’. He later produced the 3 million-selling album, ‘Made in India’ that kicked off Alisha Chenoy’s career. From this connoisseur of music and the receiver of a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ by Rolling Stone magazine comes a spellbinding tale of a young rag picker.

Set against the backdrop of Mumbai in the 90s, the novel takes you through a journey of a young man who comes to terms with life when he’s suddenly left alone in a big bad world. The rise and fall of the vagabond kid amalgamated with the impeccable use of metaphors captures the heart and makes you realign your perception about materialism.

How did the transition from music to writing come about?
I decided that at my stage, and dare I say age, I should walk away quietly from the music scene. Creating pop music is for the young, not for the young at heart. Anyway, I was sitting in my house in Spain, watching the sunset and the surf washing the shoreline and I thought what next? I did not want to go through life with just one experience, one career. The idea of opening a restaurant was tempting, but everyone said ‘You crazy’, you’ll be tied to the restaurant 20 hours a day. So then I thought about writing a novel. Since I had always written my own lyrics (in English), I thought I’d go down that avenue.

Did you hear from your fans after publishing books? How have they taken to your literary abilities?
Almost everyone has been impressed by the stories and my grasp of the language. But then I was brought up in Bangalore, where Hindi was a foreign tongue and English was the lingua franca of the middle class.

What according to you killed Indie-pop in India? As one of the pioneers of Indie-pop, do you feel saddened by the same?
A lack of talent and a plethora of sub standard music killed the Indie-pop industry. Also for a while Indie-pop ruled the waves, because Hindi film music was stuck in a time warp. But they listened to Indie-pop, got the ideas, and sounds among others , plus they had the Moola. A music video of Shah Rukh Khan fronting a song from a major film with the attendant heavyweight promo and publicity is going to have more impact than some unknown doing the same in a pop video.

What inspired you to pen down a story detailing the journey of a young rag picker on the streets of Mumbai?
I had already written my first novel ‘Curse of the Godman’ which was set in Darjeeling circa 1951, when the British had left India. So, I decided to bring my next novel to the present times and set it in Bombay as it’s the city which gave me my fondest memories as a youth in India.

The novel provides a perfect description of Mumbai’s subculture. How did you manage to delve so well into this part of the city despite moving to England long ago?
Writing is all in one’s mind. That and the Internet. The first novel ‘Curse of the Godman’ was set in Darjeeling. A lot of people emailed and wrote to me saying I had captured Darjeeling perfectly. I had to lie and say I spent time there. Why kill the illusion. You can travel the world sitting in front of your computer. But coming back to Mumbai’s sub culture, I lived there for four years and visit it every year. So, in many ways, I used to think of Mumbai as my home in India.

From where do you draw inspiration for your characters?
Inspiration is usually from perspiration. You let your mind wander, sometimes ideas come when you’re swimming, sometimes when you’re walking along the beach and sometimes when you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t go back to sleep. The mind wanders, ideas spring up, you filter them, the good ones from the bad and in the morning you rush to your lap-top and hit the keys.

What has been the biggest surprise or learning experience while writing the book?
The biggest surprise is when you read back a few chapters of what’s been written and if it’s impressive, you ask yourself ‘Did I really write that?’ and a smile percolates through and you get a warm all over feeling and the confidence and adrenalin pumps through your body. It was the same feeling I got when I used to compose a song and it felt like a winner and you knew it would be a hit.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
As a child of 12, I want to be a 13! But seriously, from a kid, I either wanted to be a film star or a singer. I couldn’t act out of a paper bag (like a lot of stars today!), so I became a singer. When I went to London, I took up writing, arranging and producing because I couldn’t get any work or gigs. So, I made my own records. Which on reflection was a far more lucrative way of doing things.

A literary figure who has inspired you in your life
Shakespeare for sure. I’m not a guy who has heroes. There are people I admire like Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi. But the truth is, even in the world of music, I had no heroes or people I looked up to. You put people on a pedestal only to be disillusioned or disappointed when you actually meet them. Then you bring them down.

Triple tragedy : Grief-stricken city resident dies in Dubai Airport

AnsooKF23aug2013
Mysore :

Unable to bear the grief caused by the untimely demise of her sister, city resident Ansuya Ganapathy (Ansoo) passed away in Dubai airport last night while she was transiting on her way back from the US to Mysore.

This is a case of triple-tragedy as Ansoo’s elder sister Prema Karumbaiah died on Sunday in Kistur village near Balele in South Kodagu. Prema also is said to have died of severe grief caused by the demise of her close relative Alamengada Parvathi Aiyappa in Kanoor village in South Kodagu on Friday.

Ansoo Ganapathy (62) and her husband Theethira K. Ganapathy (Ganesh), a retired professor residing in Jayalakshmipuram, had visited Cleveland, USA, where their sons Dr. Keerthi and Dr. Kiran are settled. Upon hearing the demise of her sister Paruvangada Prema Karumbaiah on Sunday, Ansoo was severely upset and wanted to visit Kodagu immediately to be with the family.

Ansoo and Ganapathy on their way back to Mysore were walking through the transit terminal in Dubai airport at around 9 pm (local Dubai time) when she collapsed and breathed her last. An aghast Ganapathy immediately called his son Dr. Keerthi and told him about the tragic incident.

Dr. Keerthi, a neurosurgeon, called up a few of his Kodava friends in Dubai who with the help of the members of Dubai Kodava Samaja, got the body shifted. Post-mortem was conducted the following day and the body is expected to reach Mysore either tomorrow or the day-after.

Ansoo was an active member of Sree Kaveri Kodagu Mahila Sangha, Jayalakshmi Kodava Association and Mysore Kodava Samaja.

Convenors of Jayalakshmi Kodava Association met at the residence of their President Alamengada P. Vittal this morning and condoled her death.

Team Coorg Oman returns with bronze

Muscat:

Defending Champions Team Coorg, Oman, took the third place in the Gulf Cup Hockey 2013, held at the Dubai Sports City turf ground on March 1.

Organised by UTSC for the fourth consecutive year, once again, 10 teams participated in this increasingly popular event in the region. The local clubs, having played a few tournaments leading up to the event, were tested to their limits, with a few teams bringing in professional players to ensure they were better positioned to win the trophy.

After an engrossing series of round-robin matches, where Team Coorg won against last year’s runners-up Axiom Dubai (2–0), Dubai Hockey Club ‘B’ (6–0), Sharjah Tigers (4–0), and UAE Falcons (Red) (1–1), the semifinals were played against the team from Pakistan, UAE Falcons (Green).

Easily one of the best matches of the tournament, both teams played skilfully and made repeated attacks on their opponents’ goal post. Team Coorg succeeded in gaining a penalty stroke and took the lead. The UAE Falcons (Green) team tried their best to break into Team Coorg’s circle of defence. A foot goal wrongly called by the referee enabled UAE Falcons (Green) to level the score, despite Team Coorg’s strong protests against the goal. The drawn game resulted in penalty shoot-outs, which UAE Falcons (Green) won, and they went on to take the trophy. Team Coorg defeated the Axiom team in the third-place playoff.

The predominantly female team from Dubai Hockey Club played some scintillating hockey and stood their ground against stronger teams.

The UAE Falcons (Red), with a mix of European and Asian styles of hockey, enthralled the spectators, while Axiom played a very decent game to take the “Fair Play” award. The Best Goalkeeper award was won by Team Coorg’s Mohammed Ayyad.

With the current general secretary of the Oman Hockey Association (OHA), Redha Taqi Al Lawati, under the guidance of the Chairman of the OHA Sheikh Mahfoodh Ali Juma Al Juma, announcing the Arabian Hockey Club championship to be held in March in Muscat as well as the upcoming 6-a-side tournament for the locals to be organised by the local expats’ United Tallassery Sports Club, March will be a hectic month for hockey enthusiasts.

SAS Naqvi, the sports consultant to the OHA, gave high praise to Team Coorg on their creditable performance and encouraged more expats to emulate their hard work.

Manager and Player of Team Coorg M.U. Kuttappa thanked the sponsors Al Qurum Centre, Al Rawahi International, Services and Trade Company LLC, Al Ansari, Elite Trading, Berger Paints, and the numerous individuals who came forward to contribute to the teams’ expenses. He also thanked all the supporters who turned up at the stadium in Dubai. Team Coorg Captain N.A. Cariappa congratulated the organisers for raising the bar for the competition and hoped other enthusiasts would hold similar events in other countries too. He also thanked the Oman media for their support and efforts in promoting hockey in the Sultanate.

Team Coorg: M.U. Kuttappa, K.K. Poonacha, N.A. Cariappa (C), C.A. Nikkin Thimmiah, K.D. Bidappa, K.G. Kiran Kumar, Zaman Qureshi, Poorna Chandra Shetty, Mohammed Ayyad (G), Salah, Ali Humaid, Aiman Abdullah, Jarvis Ahmed, and Adil.

They sing among us

Musician Biddu

CHAT Musician Biddu speaks of how his iconic hit Aao Na, Pyaar Karen features in Luke Kenny’s Rise of the Zombie

They just seem to be everywhere—the undead that is. In graphic novels, books and now with Luke Kenny’s Rise of the Zombie, they have stepped into Bollywood as well. Slated for release in February, musician Kenny’s apocalyptic vision is the result of a collaboration with partner Devaki Singh. Apart from bloodthirsty grisly ghouls, ROTZ also features the hit ‘Aao Na, Pyaar Karen’ composed by Biddu and with Nazia Hassan’s vocals. “Last year Luke got in touch with me saying he wanted to use the song,” Biddu says. “I like dealing with young people.”

The composer of the famous ‘Kung Fu Fighting’ says: “Unlike ‘Disco Deewane’ in Student of the Year, this will be a reworked version of ‘Aao Na.’ I haven’t heard the final version. Luke sent me two adaptations — one is trancy techno and the other has David Guetta groove to it. I don’t know which one they will finally use. If I remember right the song is being used during a rave party. Good luck to them.”

Biddu who mostly stays abroad, spends December to February in India. “Mainly in Goa, but I come to Bangalore to meet family,” says Biddu who says he is not doing any music now. “I am finishing a book which is funny and sad. It is about the sexual awakening of a boy in Mumbai.”

Biddu has written his autobiography and the simultaeneously gripping and mystical whodunit, The Curse of the Godman says his next book will be set abroad. “There is only so much you can do in India,” he says signing off with a laugh.
