The Codava National Council celebrated ‘Kakkada Padnett Namme,’ at Capitol Village, in Madikeri on Friday. The festival was flagged off by transplanting seedlings into a paddy field.

Later, they had sumptuous lunch with payasam made of “Maddu soppu” and chicken delicacies. Payasam made of maddu soppu is known for having medicinal values and usually consumed on the 18th day of the Ashada month. All the participants wore the traditional Kodavas attire.

CNC President N U Nachappa urged the government to accord union territory status to Kodagu and include Kodava in the eighth schedule of the Constitution. Study of the genealogy of Kodavas should be restarted,” he added.

  1. Nachappa has been making demands for Kodavas and Kodagu without discussion or consultation. He is also guilty of not cooperating to have one mother organization (Apex Body)on democratic lines as proposed by ‘Temporaty Association for Forging Kodava Unity’ led by Lt Gen C N Somanna (retd), Lt Gen B C Nanda, Air Marshal K C Cariappa and others more than a decade ago. Kodavas are unfortunate that we pinned faith on the leadership of such egoistic leaders like Nachappa, M C Nanaya and Mallengada Belliappa who were/are against Kodava Unity. Valuable time has been lost due to short- sightedness of these leaders and rapid demographic change in Kodagu and now it is too late to ask for a Union status The only option left is to ask for a minority status for Kodavas and special provisions for the indigenous people/Kodagu under the Constitution to protect our unique culture, language and heritage.
Recently, I met our MP Pratap Simha who also felt that without organisational unity and projecting our demands in a clear manner within the framework of the Constitution, nothing can be achieved.
Our leaders should face the reality, admit their mistakes and make amends. Will they? If not, it is time for younger lot to show them the door.
