I’m an actor by chance: Shubra Aiyappa

Model turned actress, Shubra Aiyappa is all set to make her debut in Tollywood this year. She’ll soon be seen in Nara Rohit-starrer Prathinidhi in which she’s playing the role of a journalist. While it’s not yet clear when the film is going to release, we hear that Shubra has signed yet another Telugu film.

“I’m playing Arvind Krishna’s romantic interest in my next Telugu film. It’s a romantic comedy and I’m lucky to be working with a wonderful team,” Shubra says. The film’s shooting recently began in Hyderabad and Veera Prasad is weilding the microphone for this one. “I’m playing quite a serious role in Prathinidhi and I wanted to do something different this time. I can’t talk much about the role, but I can say that it’s going to be a sweet film,” she adds.

The actress was supposed to make her debut in YVS Chowdhary’s Rey; however, she opted out of the project soon after she signed it. “That was quite unfortunate. In fact, I was happily doing modelling and TV commercials, when YVS Chowdhary saw my portfolio. I became an actor by chance when he called me for an audition. And then more people approached me after that. I’m here to stay,” she avers.

Ask her what she likes about Tollywood and Hyderabad which makes her come back again and again, she confesses, “I’m a Bangalorean and I’ve a soft corner for South Indians. What I love most about Hyderabad is its relaxed pace of life and food. Besides, people are extremely nice. I would love to do more Telugu films in future.

Joshna Chinappa notches Winnipeg Open title

Veteran Indian player Joshna Chinappa lifted her maiden WSA World Tour title with the Winnipeg Winter Club Open trophy after beating Egypt’s Heba El Torky in a hard-fought final here.

The fourth-seeded Indian triumphed 3-2 (11-13 11-8 11-5 3-11 12-10) in a see-saw battle.

The world number 27 Chinappa rallied after losing the opening game which was dominated by Heba.

The Indian raced to an 8-3 lead in the second game before pocketing it easily. She built on the advantage by claiming the third game as well before Heba roared back in the fourth.

The Egyptian’s fightback made the fifth game an exciting affair in which momentum kept swinging both ways.

Chinappa had the slight early advantage and she took a 7-6 lead but Heba clinched six straight points to make it 10-7.

But just when it seemed that Heba would walk away with the title, Chinappa got her act together and reeled off five back-to-back points to quite literally snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Chinappa’s triumph marks the second consecutive year of an Indian winning the trophy with Dipika Pallikal being the one to clinch it before her.

No Taipei-errors in India’s Perfect Winning Script

Saketh Myneni and Rohan Bopanna celebrate their victory | PTI
Saketh Myneni and Rohan Bopanna celebrate their victory | PTI

“Where’s the party tonight Saketh?” yelled Zeeshan Ali from across the room, leaving everyone in splits. Such was the occasion that it made even the ever-composed India coach shed his inhibitions and be vocal about his emotions.

A tub of ice was emptied on Saketh Myneni’s head, sending shivers down his spine, quite literally. The youngster had just smashed a winner and stood rooted to the ground as the crowd erupted in joy while the tricolour was unfurled and waved relentlessly at the ITC Tennis Stadium. Myneni and veteran Rohan Bopanna had just won their doubles rubber and sealed India’s 3-0 victory over the Chinese Taipei in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group I tie on Saturday.

The audience were treated to a victory lap with the players carrying non-playing captain Anand Amritraj on their shoulders. Pomp and patriotic fervour marked the celebrations as the hosts set up a second round clash with Korea Republic, vying for a place in the World Group play-offs.

It was a dream debut for the 26-year-old Myneni as the hosts completed the formalities in just two days, making the reverse singles matches on Sunday inconsequential. “When I hit the shot, it took a while for the victory to sink in and then I was like ‘Oh we just won’,” said Myneni. “Rohan asked me to be aggressive and I did just that.”

With Lee Hsin-Han injured, their No 1 player in the squad Tsung-Hua Yang partnered Hsien-Yin Peng for the doubles match. After being served a bagel in the first set, the duo fought back to win the second through tie-breaker. But they had no answer to Bopanna’s serve as he dished out 18 aces and dominated the net play to take India home with a 6-0, 6-7(3/7), 6-3, 7-6(7/2) win.

The Bangalorean was all praise for his partner, who left no stone unturned to provide as much support as possible. “Saketh plays fantastic doubles, I have played against him before. All I had to do was keep him motivated. We combined really well and it is easy to play with someone who serves 25-30kms faster than me. So all credit to him,” said Bopanna. “He has all the tools to be a top level player. And if he continues this way, there’s no stopping him whatsoever,” he added.

In the absence of seasoned players like Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, the duo’s performance comes as a breath of fresh air and could churn out more such wins for India in the future. It’s just one match down but this pair have certainly made the job of the selectors a tad easier.

Earlier in the day, marathon man Somdev Devvarman looked rejuvenated as he took to court to complete his five-setter against Ti Chen. And the Indian took just eight minutes to give India a 2-0 lead, not letting the previous day’s anxious moments haunt him. He set aside his defensive mindset and attacked from the word go to win 6-7(4/7), 7-6 (7/3), 1-6, 6-2, 9-7.

“A player cannot pull off a marathon five-setter on his own and it takes contribution from the entire team to eke out such a win,” Somdev said. “I am so relieved that I won. This morning, Yuki sent a message with a picture saying ‘keep calm boys’. They all kept me incredibly calm,” he added. Coach Zeeshan said the team functioned as a unit and it was their bonding that saw them through. “It’s been years since we saw all players assemble on the same day ahead of the Davis Cup. All of us were here on Sunday and ever since there hasn’t been a single meal we haven’t had together,” Zeeshan said.

Karnataka plans eco-sensitive zones in forests

The State government has drawn up plans to create 32 in the forests, especially in Kodagu, Shimoga, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Chikmagalur and Mysore districts, for protecting both the people residing within the forests and wild animals.

After the Cabinet Sub Committee on Forest discussed these issues, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra, who chaired the meeting, said that this would be tabled before the State Cabinet and then sent to the Union government for approval.

Mr. Jayachandra said that the Union government had, in its guidelines to the States, suggested that there should be a 10-km zone near each human habitat where big construction activity, power lines of more than 11 kVA, big resorts and industries could not be allowed to come up.

However, small constructions such as homestays could be allowed.

He said that the zones could be just one, two or three kilometres away from the habitats.

Asked whether these guidelines were binding on the State government, he said that there was no law to regulate such activities in the State.

He said that the State forest officers would discuss the issue with the Union government and convince it of the workable alternatives, based on specific reasons.

Wherever it was difficult to implement the guidelines, the State government would strive to get relief to the people, he said.

Objection

The committee also discussed the situation arising out of a case filed by the Goa Foundation before the Green Bench of the Supreme Court at Chennai.

The committee decided to file an objection within 10 days to the demand of the Goa Foundation that the Kasturirangan Committee report, which was notified by the Union government, be implemented.

Mr. Jayachandra said that the notification had adversely impacted development activities worth Rs. 25,000 crore in the Western Ghats. Works of the Indian Institute of Science, the DRDO and a unit for the manufacture of unmanned aerial vehicles in Challakere of Chitradurga district had been stopped due to public protests.

City to have seven more Family Counselling Centres

Central Social Welfare Board to fund two of them

The city police will set up seven more Family Counselling Centres (FCC), two of which will be funded by the Central Social Welfare Board (CSWB), in a bid to provide timely help to women in distress.

CSWB chairperson Prema Cariappa, who visited the women’s helpline centre at the City Police Commissioner’s office here on Wednesday, said the Board has sanctioned seven such centres for the State, two of which would be set up in the city.

Lauding the efforts of the helpline in the commissioner’s office, Ms. Cariappa said the city police already have two FCCs and are planning seven more.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Raghavendra H. Auradkar said two of the new FCCs would be set up at Banaswadi to serve South Division and at Malleshwaram to cater to the North Division. This would ensure that people need not come to the Commissioner’s office to seek assistance, he added.

Stating that each police division would have one counselling centre, Mr. Auradkar said the aim is to have one centre at each police station.

Meanwhile, Ms. Cariappa said the CSWB had hiked the salary of counsellors from Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 13,500 a month at the city level and from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 12,000 in rural areas.

Counsellors told Ms. Cariappa that they were finding it difficult to provide information under the RTI Act as a major part of the counselling is done under confidentiality, to which she said the CSWB would take a decision.

SOS calls

It was also brought to her notice that the helpline gets SOS calls from women facing mental distress. Though the State has around 29 short stay homes to rehabilitate victims, there is no provision to house mentally distressed women, the helpline centre’s co-ordinator, Rani Shetty, said.

Replying to this, Ms. Cariappa said the Board would earmark one short stay home for such persons.

Badminton ace Ashwini Ponnappa to try her hand at singles

Ace shuttler Ashwini Ponnappa has been a force to reckon with in doubles. Now, she wants to try her hand in singles. The 24-year-old will participate in the singles category at the all-India ranking tournament in Bangalore next week.

“I’d like to give a shot at singles,” Ponnappa told dna in Panvel, where she attended Alegria, a college fest organised by Pillai Group of Institutions, on Tuesday.

“I love doubles. But I’d like to play singles. I stopped playing singles because of circumstances. I feel I don’t want to sit around but play singles in national circuit and have fun. Singles is easier and I don’t have to worry about. However, I am not sure whether I would take it seriously but I would certainly like to win some titles so that it will help my confidence,” she said.

“Incidentally, I will be playing singles next week since Jwala is not taking part in the tournament. This gives me a chance to explore. Anyway, I don’t have anything to lose,” Ponnappa added.

This year will see two of the biggest events — Commonwealth Games and Asian Games – and Ponnappa has set her eyes on both. “Jwala and I will be looking to defend the CWG title. Every tournament is important and we take it as a preparation. The more we play, the better we get. Asian Games, on the other hand, is neither going to be easy nor difficult. We have beaten Asian players and aim to do well in that competition as well,” added Ponnappa.

Ponnappa, who was partnerinig Pradnya Gadre during the time Gutta was away from the sport for a while, is back with her old partner. “We needed that break. Jwala has been playing for long and she needed a break, especially after she went through a lot. However, we are back now with better understanding, respect and a lot more hungry,” she said.
“It is important to get along off the court. We have to understand each other and have to be friendly, otherwise you can’t expect magic to happen on court. We are pretty good friends off the court. With both of us having different characteristics, it creates a kind of balance,” she said.

“The controversies (surrounding Gutta) affect us, especially what happened post Indian Badminton League. But, when we get on court, we leave everything aside.”

With the new leagues coming in every sport, Ponnappa believed they will develop a sporting culture in India. “These leagues give a bigger platform for sports. If you are passionate, you can use these platforms to prove yourself. It also helps one to earn money and play some quality matches. It is a really nice concept as you get to travel, be part of a team, compete with your friends and doing well for your teams,” she said.
